Far Cry Getting Adapted Into Anthology Series at FX

FX has greenlit a Far Cry TV series, turning Ubisoft’s long-running video game franchise into a live-action anthology.

The series comes from Noah Hawley (Fargo, Alien: Earth) and Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Welcome To Wrexham), with McElhenney also set to star.

Far Cry will stream on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.

Producers say the series will follow the structure of the games: each season features a new cast, new location, and a standalone story. It mirrors what Hawley already does with Fargo, which uses a new narrative each year built around a shared theme.

Hawley explained why the franchise fits his approach. “Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” he said. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.”

McElhenney also praised the collaboration and the creative freedom behind the project. “Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” he said. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created.”

The network’s leadership pointed to their long working history with both creatives. Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, said: “FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry.”

Hawley’s last FX project, Alien: Earth, recently scored a second-season renewal after earning a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score. McElhenney continues to produce Welcome To Wrexham, which remains a strong performer for the network.

Ubisoft’s Blockbuster Franchise Heads to TV

Since launching in 2004, Far Cry has reached more than 100 million unique players. The franchise is known for fast-paced first-person combat, large open-world maps, and iconic villains. The most recent title, Far Cry 6, featured Giancarlo Esposito as Antón Castillo and released in 2021.

The Far Cry games follow ordinary people trapped in lawless regions ruled by violent tyrants, forcing them to fight back against ruthless factions and cults. Each entry drops players into a new hostile environment where survival, resistance, and taking down a dominant villain drive the story.

FX’s Far Cry will be executive produced by Hawley, McElhenney, Emilia Serrano, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, John Campisi, and multiple members of Ubisoft Film & Television. The series is produced by FX Productions.
