The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its shortlists for the 97th Academy Awards, with Deadpool & Wolverine up for two potential Oscar nominations, and flicks such as Alien: Romulus, Dune: Part Two and even Joker: Folie à Deux makes the cut.
Ten categories have been released which will see each of the group of contenders narrowed down when the nominations are officially announced next month.
Sound and Visual Effects Shortlist: Superheroes and Sci-Fi
Deadpool & Wolverine secures a spot on the shortlist for Best Sound. The film is joined by:
- Alien: Romulus
- Blitz
- A Complete Unknown
- Dune: Part Two
- Emilia Pérez
- Gladiator II
- Joker: Folie à Deux
- Wicked
- The Wild Robot
Deadpool & Wolverine is also on the shortlist for Best Visual Effects along with:
- Alien: Romulus
- Better Man
- Civil War
- Dune: Part Two
- Gladiator II
- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
- Mufasa: The Lion King
- Twisters
- Wicked
As you can see from above, the competition in the categories highlights a strong presence of science fiction, comic book adaptations, and action-packed flicks. The first Deadpool from back in 2016 was actually talked about as a potential Oscar contender but didn’t make the cut. Some think the flick was snubbed. Marvel Comics even released a variant cover to X-Men Gold #1 in 2017 from Ron Lim featuring the Merc With A Mouth being given a gold “Oscar” of Cyclops.
