Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson thinks DC and Marvel should crossover one day and he’s optimistic about it happening.
“I am optimistic,” Johnson filled in Total Film magazine. “Just my nature is optimistic. And especially when it comes to creative. Especially when it comes to movies. And especially when it comes to the pantheon of DC superheroes and supervillains. Across the street, we have the pantheon of superheroes and supervillains of Marvel. To me, they can not only exist, but they should, in my mind, cross paths one day.”
Dwayne Johnson wants to expand the DC universe
DC insiders filled me while I was at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con that Dwayne Johnson wants to take over the DC film universe (and that Henry Cavill could return as Superman), and while speaking with Total film talks about pushing for more DC integration.
“The goal is to really expand the universe, and introduce new characters, and spin-off, and be really strategic about the plan,” Johnson said. “We have a few ideas of what characters people are really going to respond to in Black Adam, and so we’re already thinking ahead to: ‘Let’s start thinking about that movie, and what that movie looks like for them.'”
Black Adam is part of a shared DC universe
Hiram Garcia, who produces Black Adam, DC League of Super-Pets, and Shazam!, also added it’s all about creating a shared universe.
“I think our ambition has always been that this is all a shared universe, you know?” said Garcia. “While [Black Adam and Shazam] may not be crossing paths, everything exists in a big umbrella of the DC universe. And we want to be able to build out the universe as big as we can, and, you know, with those ambitions. If everything’s received the way we hope it will be, we have opportunities to potentially see crossovers in certain points.”
Black Adam and Shazam not crossing paths (yet?)
Regarding Black Adam and Shazam not crossing paths (yet?), Johnson told Vanity fair he wanted to keep Black Adam at the start its own thing for the benefit of the character.
“When the first draft of the movie came to us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: Two origin stories in one movie,” Johnson said. “Now that was the goal — so it wasn’t a complete surprise. But when I read that, I just knew in my gut, ‘We can’t make this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice.’ It would’ve been fine for Shazam having two origin stories converge in one movie, but not good for Black Adam.”
Black Adam opens in theaters on October 21, 2022, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and also stars Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Mo Amer, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate.
Description: Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.
