WB Launches DC Super Hero Girls

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22290:]]

Girls now have their very own Super Hero world, DC Super Hero Girls, where they can play, watch, read and be inspired to discover their full super power potential alongside legendary DC Comics female Super Heroes, including Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Batgirl, in this all-new universe that was created just for them.

DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, in partnership with Mattel, announced today the activation of many elements to this highly anticipated initiative, including the rollout of the new DCSuperHeroGirls.com website, which kicks off with the U.S. launch today. A global rollout of the digitally immersive world will begin later this month.

Website, Video and More…

The new DCSuperHeroGirls.com site today debuts the first webisode, of a series of animated digital shorts, titled “Welcome to Super Hero High” that was created by the award-winning Warner Bros. Animation Studio, in partnership with Mattel’s Playground Productions. Today’s launch features a pantheon of DC Comics characters that have been brought to life in a completely new artistic style and aesthetic, through immersive videos, games, quizzes, character photos, bios and more.

In the coming weeks and months the new website will be regularly updated with new animated digital content and previews of upcoming products slated for 2016.  In conjunction with the website launch, DC Super Hero Girls will have a dedicated presence across a number of social media platforms, including exclusive DC Super Hero Girls YouTube, Facebook and Instagram accounts, to cater to social media savvy girls and their parents.

“DC Entertainment has a deep and rich roster of strong female characters – both heroes and villains – that have inspired and empowered girls and young women for decades. From the iconic Wonder Woman and Supergirl, to the complex but compelling Harley Quinn and Catwoman, there is a character to whom every girl can relate, no matter what stage of life in which she currently finds herself,” said Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment and President and Chief Content Officer of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.  “Girls want to experience the strength, action and optimism of Super Heroes too, and DC Super Hero Girls is part of our long-term strategy to offer a diverse array of strong female characters in a fun and action-packed universe, and through a world of epic storytelling on a variety of entertainment platforms.  We could not be more excited and proud to debut today’s first phase of the important new universe for girls.”

New York Comic Con

DC Super Hero Girls will take New York Comic Con by storm as girls and their parents, along with all DC Comics fans, attending NYCC October 8-11 will be the first to see elements of the initiative and experience a variety of activities, including a behind-the-scenes panel session, a look at upcoming products and much more. Fans will also get a sneak-peek at Mattel’s upcoming product line, including first-ever 6” action figures designed for girls and 12” scale action dolls featuring strong, athletic bodies that stand on their own in heroic poses.

Activities at NYCC will include a dedicated DC Super Hero Girls booth within the Javits Center’s Crystal Palace, where fans on-site can get a close-up look at the action dolls and a sneak-peek at additional products within the DC Super Hero Girls world. NYCC attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in unique giveaways and photo opportunities. Consumer Products.

Additional Key Partners

Books based on the DC Super Hero Girls are also a key component of the program. Random House Children’s Books is the global master publishing partner and will create a portfolio of middle-grade novels that will bring the DC Super Hero Girls universe to life, offering all-new stories that will expand the world from what is featured in the animated content. At NYCC, Random House will unveil a portion of the first book of the middle-grade novel series, titled Wonder Woman at Super Hero High, by distributing 3-chapter samplers of the title, along with fun DC Super Hero Girls bookmarks, throughout the weekend.

DC Entertainment has also secured writer Shea Fontana to create the inaugural original graphic novel.  Scheduled for release in July 2016, the young Super Heroes are kidnapped by a teenage Lex Luthor the day before Super Hero High’s semester finals. Additionally, consumer products partners around the globe are engaged in creating a merchandise program dedicated to DC Super Hero Girls across all key categories.

Wonder Woman: Earth One OGN Cover Revealed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22222:]]

DC Comics revealed the cover and info for the upcoming Grant Morrison Wonder Woman Earth One original graphic novel.

Yanick Paquette created the cover (via Hit Fix) and is doing the interior art as well.

The OGN goes on sale April 12, 2016.

Synopsis:

From the masterful minds of Grant Morrison (FINAL CRISIS, THE MULTIVERSITY) and Yanick Paquette (SWAMP THING, BATMAN, INC.) comes the most provocative origin of Wonder Woman you’ve ever seen — a wholly unique retelling that still honors her origins.

For millennia, the Amazons of Paradise Island have created a thriving society away from the blight of man. One resident, however, is not satisfied with this secluded life — Diana, Princess of the Amazons, knows there is more in this world and wants to explore, only to be frustrated by her protective mother, Hippolyta. Diana finds her escape when Air Force pilot Steve Trevor, the first man she has ever seen, crashes onto their shores. With his life hanging in the balance, Diana ventures into the long forbidden world of men. The Amazons chase after her and bring her back to Paradise Island in chains to face trial for breaking their oldest law…staying separated from the world that wronged them.

Thought provoking yet reverent, thoroughly modern but still timeless, the power and courage of Paradise Island’s greatest champion — Wonder Woman — is introduced in this new addition to DC’s New York Times best selling Earth One original graphic novel series.

Marvel Comics Announces New Black Panther Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22210:]]

MARVEL COMICS’ BLACK PANTHER #1 HELMED BY TA-NEHISI COATES
New York Times Bestselling Author Takes on T’Challa, a.k.a. the Black Panther

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22209:]]

Marvel is excited to announce that next spring, one of the most thought-provoking and perceptive writers today, Ta-Nehisi Coates (Between the World and Me) along with legendary artist Brian Stelfreeze, will helm a new BLACK PANTHER series, adding an exciting, erudite new voice to the All-New, All –Different Marvel lineup.

The indomitable will of Wakanda — the famed African nation known for its vast wealth, advanced technology and warrior traditions — has long been reflected in the will of its monarchs, the Black Panthers. But now, the current Black Panther, T’Challa, finds that will tested by a superhuman terrorist group called The People that has sparked a violent uprising among the citizens of Wakanda.  T’Challa knows the country must change to survive — the question is, will the Black Panther survive the change?

“Wakanda is really the light of the world, in the Marvel Universe. And yet it’s a system of governance that has not advanced beyond the idea of blood-rule,” says Coates.  “It’s always seemed to me that T’Challa was aware of this discrepancy. Among the monarchs of Marvel –Namor and Doctor Doom for instance– T’Challa has always been distinguished to me by his discomfort on the throne, and with the problems of one-man rule. I am very much looking forward to exploring that tension.”

That tension and conflict is what will fire BLACK PANTHER #1 into a no-holds-barred adventure that will demonstrate why Black Panther is one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe.

“Ta-Nehisi writes brilliantly about everything from race to politics to fatherhood to modern culture, but he’s also a longtime Marvel reader. And combining his writing skills with his passion for and understanding of Marvel’s characters, paired with the captivating and engaging artwork of modern master Brian Stelfreeze, has led to a truly amazing story that we can’t wait for the world to read,” says Wil Moss, editor of the new BLACK PANTHER series. “This story will have all the political intrigue of the best episodes of THE WEST WING and HOMELAND, but it’s also going to have the trademark Marvel action and energy that Stan Lee & Jack Kirby (Black Panther’s creators!) built into the foundation of the Marvel Universe. Look for some fun and unexpected Marvel villains to show up in this story, as well as an appearance or two by T’Challa’s new teammates, The Ultimates.”

Join us next year as Marvel continues to change the creative landscape of the comic book industry as Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze make history as the new creative team on Marvel Comics’ BLACK PANTHER.

Dan Slott & Mike Allred’s Silver Surfer Not Confirmed To Return In 2016

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22206:]]

Apparently some web sites jumped the gun and mentioned Dan Slott and Mike Allred’s Silver Surfer series would be returning in 2016.

Well, that’s not the case. At least not, yet.

Mike Allred took to Twitter to state it’s up to Marvel for the series to return.

July’s Silver Surfer sold around 24k and change.

August’s Silver Surfer #15 looked to be the last issue; however, this month and October does see Marvel publish a bunch of Surfer trades.

Retailers Slam DC Comics New 52 & DC YOU

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22204:]]

With DC Comics recently cancelling five titles, and then uncancelling Omega Men, in addition to recent negative comments from comics writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and rumors of DC being $2 million in the hole, now comes the retailer side of things.

Sktchd.com caught up with five retailers inquiring about their thoughts on the New 52 as well as the new DC YOU initiative, which has been rumored to be dumped by DC (and un-rumored).

I’ll just grab a few excerpts from the interview; you can check out the interview via the link above.

On expectations going into the DC YOU:

…ordered stronger on the #1s than the ones that had continuations in numbering.

With the number or relaunches (and) reboots in the last few years we had zero expectations going into it.

…the expectations for DC You were low.

After much disappointment (and diminishing returns) from DC’s New 52, I wasn’t overly optimistic about their new DC You initiative.

Our expectations were low, but optimistic, if possible to be both.

The books have been not selling well at all.

I wish I had better news, but the response hasn’t been great … Interest in DC Comics has continued to drop and I don’t think the DC You initiative was enough to reinvigorate it again.

None of the new titles are doing well at all, while we like a couple of them, none seem to be resonating with our readers.

People are just sick of relaunches. And the talent on many of these books is, quite frankly, subpar.

I think there’s almost a vote of no confidence against DC these days.

I don’t see these books selling better as collections. Why would they? A bad book is a bad book.

DC Comics Omega Men Will Continue To Issue #12

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22179:]]

A few days ago saw word hit that DC Comics is cancelling five titles with Omega Men amongst the list.

Fan outcry ensued, which saw DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio responding that it was a “tough decision,” but that sales dropped quicker than expected.

The good news is that DC has listened to the fans and has decided to give Omega Men at least a full 12 issues.

Jim Lee, DiDio’s fellow DC Comics co-publisher, tweeted they are continuing Omega Men — all because of the fans.

Omega Men is written by Tom King with art by Barnaby Bagenda.

King is excited by the news as well: “You asked. It happened. Thank you so much. DCYou. Hell yeah,” King posted on Twitter.

You can catch up on Omega Men through DC Digital. The next issue, Omega Men #5, hits October 7th.

Advanced Review: Captain America: White #1

It has been a very long time, seven years to be exact, since the duo of, Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, have put out Captain America: White #0. Why the long wait? Not too sure, all I know is that when Loeb and Sale get together to work on one of Marvel’s “Color” books, something profound is created.

Captain America: White #1 is a brand new tale dealing with the emotional shock Cap faced after awakening in a time not his own amidst modern marvels and Avengers. Loeb immediately takes the tale back to WWII as Cap reminisces about the loss of his best friend and compatriot, Bucky. We see the brutality of war and how even the greatest of soldiers can have their focus distracted when it comes to the safety of a dear friend. We are also graced with Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos and how they react to America’s “Boy Scout” both on and off the field of battle and deal with the duality of heroism.

Loeb and Sale have done an exquisite job on molding a tale that delves deeper into the consciousness and sorrow of one of the greatest comic book characters ever created. It, like their other “Color” tales, not only focuses on emotional upheaval in a first person point of view, it also takes us to the true core of the characters. They show first hand how even the mighty need to persevere tragedy and come out stronger due to their emotional scars.

This is a tale to be revered with the highest standards and, in my opinion, is the best read of the week. Don’t let the high price point of $4.99 deter you from one fantastic story, because you actually receive two! Not only do you get the first installment of this limited series but you also receive a reproduction of Captain America: White #0! And as an extra bonus, you will also be able to read an interview with Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb conducted by Richard Starking, from seven years ago, chock full of Tim Sale sketches, drawings, birthday cards and photos of the creators from their childhoods! You couldn’t ask for anything more!

Advanced Review: Bloodshot Reborn #6

Bloodshot, as a character, has always been able to be defined in the simplest of terms. Man without a memory and extreme healing, kills mercilessly for a “shadow” company; end of story, insert random mission and repeat! Jeff Lemire has made things more complicated with Bloodshot Reborn, and it pays off tenfold!

So, I minimized the amount of complications Lemire has brought to the book, just a little: First, Lemire has taken away Bloodshot’s healing factor, nanites that feed off of protein and can heal him from virtually any wound. Second, Lemire has made him delusional, seeing dead Geomancer and love of his life, Kay and a cartoon version of himself, Bloodsquirt, on a constant basis which drives him to drugs to “quiet” their constant yammering regarding him killing again. Third, and the basis of this current arc, is that the nanites he once had now reside in other people and are driving them mad, mingling with their already deprived natures and let them murder without remorse. Now Bloodshot, with the FBI on his trail and a twenty year old female tag-along named, Magic, in tow, must kill these “infected” murderers to regain his nanites in order to control them.

Now that the cards are on the table and everyone is caught up, issue #6 is the best of the series so far! Lemire continues to build the levels of Bloodshot’s humanity while he drives him ever closer to losing it again. Lemire makes Bloodshot multifaceted by showing the reluctant relationship he has started with Magic. One where human emotion has begun to out weigh the risk of death each step may bring her as she follows him down the twisted path that may very well lead him to losing the humanity he has finally gained. It is a harrowing journey that the reader knows will only lead to loss and bloodshed, yet we root for Bloodshot to finally be whole again, both with his humanity and with the power to be so much more.

The heavy tale is also interwoven with hints of levity coming from the awkward pairing of Agent Hoyt and Agent Festival. It is the perfect “odd couple” of male/female, old/young, skeptic/”gifted” that is a pure pleasure to read! Their coarse demeanor with each other is hilarious and yet, when needed they are a wonderfully blended team that is no nonsense.

The shocking middle and and even more unnerving ending will have readers craving for more! Lemire has taken a character that was as one dimensional as the come and has created a cornucopia of dimensions that will astound you. Bloodshot Reborn is a MUST read book month after month!

Guardians of Infinity Character Designs & New Details Revealed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21876:]]

Following the news of the new upcoming Guardians of Infinity ongoing that pairs Dan Abnett with Carlo Barberi, Marvel.com has released character designs for the Guardians 1000 members as well as an interview with the creators.

Fans of the previous Marvel Cosmic titles should be excited for Guardians of Infinity as no one can write the Guardians better than Abnett.

I think that’s why I’ve always loved the cosmic side of Marvel: placing super heroes in an [sci-fi] context means that it’s less about costumes and secret identities and integrating super hero roles into a ‘real world.’  These are characters [that] look and behave the way they do because of non-terrestrial technology, culture, and abilities. We get a sense of the whole universe, and the possibilities are vast and ingenious. Take Rocket, as an example. On Earth, he’d be a curiosity, a goofy “fun” character. Out in the universe, he’s non-human adventurer that we don’t have to qualify or excuse. We can just get on with enjoying his misadventures.

Abnett says obviously time travel will be used to connect the teams, but hints it won’t be the same old same old.

The idea I was playing with was to mix up the characters from the two existing eras of Guardians: Rocket’s crew from “now” and Vance Astro’s team of freedom fighters from the year 3000.  That’s inevitably going to involve time travel, at the very least, as a mechanism to bring them together. But I thought of a way of using cross-time contact as part of the story itself without it being the usual “travel in time, change the future/past” cliché.

Abnett also describes the differences between the three teams.

I also really want to differentiate, not just between characters, but between team philosophies. The ‘now’ GOTG are very much rogues and misfits, but the Guardians 3000 are much more heroic—they’re freedom fighters, after all. It’s like mixing a gang of charming crooks with a dedicated squad of soldiers. Then the Guardians 1000—well, they are explorers. They are noble. They are optimistic and are all about embracing the wonder of the Universe. The three teams may have the same name, but they couldn’t be more different. Streams are going to be crossed, is what I’m saying.

Abnett offers the series is going to be a great ride and more.

Great characters; really great art from Carlo; plus an opportunity to leap headlong into the wonder of the broader Marvel Universe. If you’re shy of all things cosmic, you don’t know if it’s your thing, or if you’re fascinated by that side of the Marvel Universe but don’t know your Galadorans from your Spartax, the answer is right here. Jump on board. We’ll explain everything you need to know on the way. No prior experience needed.

But hold on tight, because Rocket’s driving, and space can get crazy at this time of day.

“Guardians of Infinity” hits in December.

GUARDIANS OF INFINITY #1

Written by DAN ABNETT & JASON LATOUR

Art by CARLO BARBERI & JIM CHEUNG

Cover by JIM CHEUNG

Variant Cover by CARLO BARBERI

IN THE INFINITE EXPANSE OF TIME AND SPACE IS THERE ROOM FOR MORE GUARDIANS? YOU BET THERE IS!

Defending the galaxy is a good gig, but Drax isn’t thrilled with the combat hours (not enough of them) and Rocket isn’t thrilled with the compensation (not enough of it). They’re off on an adventure to supplement both, and Groot is happy to come along. But instead of the perks they want, they’re about to get more trouble than they can handle. Good thing the Guardians 3000 are on hand to help! But what about…THE GUARDIANS 1000??!!

Also in this issue, Latour and Cheung tell a one-off story of Ben Grimm and Rocket Raccoon, stuck on a planet where culture is based on Earth-style professional wrestling…but the stakes are life and death! THIS AIN’T KAYFABE, BROTHER!

DC Comics Cancelling 5 Titles As Of December

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22101:]]

It’s learned DC Comics is cancelling five titles as of December with Justice League United, Gotham By Midnight, The Omega Men, Lobo and Doomed.

All of the titles except for Justice League United are selling less than 20k as of July, so the news shouldn’t be all that surprising.

In the case of Lobo, which is the lowest selling of the five with less than 13k, DC rebooted the character with more of a Twilight/Elvis look, with most fans not being too happy about the change in direction of the Main Man.

It’s also learned Catwoman will have a new creative team as of December’s issue #47 with writer Frank Tieri and artist Inaki Miranda on board.

As CBR notes, the creators of the above cancelled comics still have other titles in the works at DC.

Update: Regarding the cancellation of Omega Men, Dan DiDio responded as follow on Facebook to fan complaints:

It was a tough decision, we all felt the series had great potential, but sales dropped from issue to issue quicker than expected.

Awesome Joker Halloween Lawn Ornament From Batman: Death Of The Family

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22044:]]

Halloween is right around the corner, and what better way is there to scare the little trick ‘r treaters in your neighborhood than with the Batman: Death of The Family Joker lawn ornament?!

No really. Imagine the faces they’ll make. On a platter.

Marvel Worse Than DC: Places Ads Between Splash Pages

Update: Tom Brevoort has made it known that it was a printer error:

That was a printer’s error, actually–that ad spread was inserted into the wrong place in the books from a particular printer.

Comic fans weren’t too happy when DC Comics added advertisements which ended up slitting the pages in half.

Now Marvel has gone one step further and has actually inserted one page ads between splash pages.

The new ad format hit Marvel’s comics this week as users on Reddit and various social networks are complaining.

Marvel Comics Announces Red Wolf Ongoing Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:22009:]]

RED WOLF #1 – MARVEL’S PREMIER NATIVE-AMERICAN HERO

RECEIVES NEW ONGOING SERIES!

The Marvel Universe’’s American Southwest now has a superhero to call its very own –– the mysterious new hero, RED WOLF! Recently seen within the pages of Secret Wars’ 1872, this new hero is suddenly thrust into the new Marvel Universe as its latest righteousness defender no matter what it takes! An outsider and an honest man, Red Wolf is going to need all his wits, and both his fists, to serve and protect this new world from the corrupt organizations that want to control this already stifling landscape of the gritty and harsh American Southwest.

Series writer Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow, Punisher) is joined by artist Dalibor Talajiæ (Uncanny X-Force, Empire of the Dead) and cover artist Jeffrey Veregge, a member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe based out of Kingston, Washington, who’s also of Suquamish and Duwamish decent. Veregge will also be providing consulting when it comes to characterization and design for the new series.

“There’s not a character like Red Wolf out there right now,” Veregge told Mashable at the time of the series announcement. “As a native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America, and hold his own in this universe. That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture. It’s about them being a hero.”

“There’’s something about that harsh terrain of the American Southwest that requires an adaptable, thoughtful, resourceful hero, and that’’s Red Wolf all over,”” said series editor Jacob Thomas. “”He doesn’’t have amped up strength or tech, he’’s got quick wits, hard fists, and an unshakable sense of justice. Underestimate him at your own peril.””

This December, the new Marvel Universe gains a new hero who pledges to never let the crushing hands of ruthlessness control those who cannot defend themselves. Red Wolf is here to keep order and maintain peace …no matter the cost.
