It’s reported that presale tickets for Captain America: Brave New World are on par with that of Eternals, which opened to $71 million. Yeah, that is a bad thing.
Eternals is considered one of the MCU’s biggest busts with a $402 million box office gross. There also won’t be an Eternals 2 , and recently it was learned the same producer behind Eternals and Captain America: Brave New World is exiting Marvel. It’s also been reported Brave New World has gone through multiple reshoots ballooning its budget to $350 million or more, much higher than that of Eternals.
Movie theaters are empty
Following tickets having gone on sale last week, I checked my local movie theaters. As I tweeted, my Captain America: Brave New World movie theaters are pretty much empty.

Presale ticket report
Now we get a report from Luiz Fernando via X who covers box office news on X.
And yeah, #CaptainAmerica: #BraveNewWorld had its pre-sales kickoff on FRI at US #BoxOffice!

After 2 days of pre-sales, although nowhere near #Quantumania which opened on the same weekend in 2023, #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is currently 1.4x better than #TheMarvels &… pic.twitter.com/tUjyyHE1Sx
Nowhere near Quantumania, on par with Eternals
Fernando goes over the Captain America: Brave New World presale ticket numbers who says ticket sales are nowhere near Quantumania (opened to $106M) but at least is performing better than both The Marvels ($46M opening) and Joker 2 ($37.6M), two of the worst CBM’s in history. Fernando also says tickets are falling short of both Black Widow ($80M opening) and Dune 2 ($82.5M opening).
“And yeah, Captain America: Brave New World had its pre-sales kickoff on Friday at the US box office!” posted Fernando. “After two days of pre-sales, although nowhere near Quantumania, which opened on the same weekend in 2023, Captain America: Brave New World is currently performing 1.4x better than The Marvels and Joker: Folie à Deux, on par with Eternals, and not that far from Black Widow and Dune: Part Two after their first two days of pre-sales.”
Hoped to beat Shang-Chi
Fernando goes on to compare Captain America: Brave New World to the first Captain America and Thor films ($65M openings but when inflation is factored in it’s more like $90M) with hope it could beat Shang-Chi ($75M opening), another Marvel bomb. Oddly, Fernando says Brave New World will have good word of mouth, which isn’t the case at all, at least right now.
“Keeping the same pacing in relation to the other films, Captain America 4 could be securing a three-day opening above both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, and could even challenge Shang-Chi’s three-day opening, which was higher than Eternals thanks to positive word of mouth and the Labor Day holiday boost, similar to what Captain America 4 will also benefit from, especially on Sunday,” posted Fernando.
Did Deadpool and Wolverine hurt Captain America: Brave New World?
Fernando also thinks Captain America: Brave New World getting released after Deadpool and Wolverine is a good thing. I would actually argue the opposite as Deadpool and Wolverine actually reminded fans about Chris Evans who is now reported to be returning to the MCU along with Robert Downey Jr. in Avengers: Doomsday.
“But Captain America has an advantage none of those films had: it’s coming right after Deadpool and Wolverine, which certainly brought the MCU back to several casual viewers’ radar. That alone could help Captain America 4 achieve stronger walk-ups than its comparisons ever could,” Fernando tweeted.
President’s Day weekend doesn’t matter
Also as pointed out by Fernando, Captain America: Brave New World opens President’s Day weekend, where he thinks it will be a benefit for the movie. However, he just said ticket sales are nowhere near Quantumania, so that says President’s Day weekend is meaningless. What matters is if the movies are any good.
“Captain America: Brave New World debuts on February 14, taking advantage of the Presidents’ Day long holiday boost,” he tweeted.
Box office estimates
Right now, box office estimates are between $86-$95 million with some as even high as $107 million. However, according to the presale ticket data above, those estimates are way too high. We’ll also get an indication if Marvel thinks word of mouth will be any good when they allow sites to release their reviews. If it’s the same day as opening or even a day before, it’s not a good sign.
