Bill Skarsgård’s The Crow Looks Like Jared Leto’s Joker?

The new look of Eric Draven isn't from the comics or the fan-favorite film starring Brandon Lee.

Summary

  • The release date for The Crow has been switched with Ballerina
  • The film is a modern reimagining of the original graphic novel and stars Bill Skarsgård
  • Director Rupert Sanders drew inspiration for Skarsgård’s look from his own life and modern influences and not from the comics or the Brandon Lee movie

With the release date switching places with Ballerina, Lionsgate now releases a first look at Bill Skarsgård’s The Crow which upon first impression, looks a lot like Jared Leto’s Joker from DC’s Suicide Squad.

Rupert Sanders is directing, who is known for Snow White and the Huntsman, and the reboot is said to be a modern reimagining of the original graphic novel by James O’Barr. Of course, there is also the cult-favorite film starring Brandon Lee from 1994.

The description for the reboot says that Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

Vanity Fair has a featured article and interview on The Crow reboot which includes first look images of Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven where the actor and character are all tatt’d up (with Illuminati tattoos) similar to Leto’s Joker look.

Rupert Sanders offers this about the new look of The Crow which isn’t from the comic or the original movie, but is his own vsion:

As for Skarsgård’s chiseled and menacingly inked-up “dude with the dragon tattoo” look in the second half of the film (see photo of him standing in front of a mirror), Sanders says that his inspiration was less cribbed from O’Barr’s graphic novel or Lee’s previous incarnation than from his own life. “I think the beauty of Bill is that he has a disturbing beauty, and as he transforms through his loss he becomes this thing that even he can’t control. It’s that famous line: ‘Whoever fights monsters must be careful that they don’t become one.’ That look was me in the ’90s when we were squat-raving in London, [mixed with some modern influences] like Post Malone and Lil Peep. I hope people who are 19 today look at him and go, ‘That guy is us.’” That image captures the beginning of his transformation into the Crow. “It’s the moment we realize bad things are coming.”

The Crow gets released on June 7.

Again, my first impression is Bill Skarsgård looks like the little brother of the Jared Leto Joker:
