Beetlejuice 2 Crushes Box Office; Blows Away First Movie

Beetlejuice 2 opened over the weekend and absolutely crushed it at the box office, even blowing away the first movie’s gross from back in 1988.

The sequel opened to $111 million, much higher than estimates. The first Beetlejuice was released in 1988 and opened to $8 million, the equivalent of only $21 million in today’s dollars.

Beetlejuice 2 also sent Deadpool & Wolverine to the grave which in its seventh weekend brought in another $7 million for the #2 spot.

It will be interesting to see if Beetlejuice 2 can remain at #1 for its second weekend, which it looks to do, as it faces competition from James McAvoy’s Speak No Evil which looks open around $15M-$20M.

Update: Beetlejuice 2 took the #1 spot in its second weekend with $51,350,355.

Worth a mention is that some sites have the Transformers One animated movie opening this weekend but its release is next weekend, September 20.
