Marvel’s Armor Wars movie which has been in development first at a Disney+ series and then as a movie is currently up in the air and is not a sure thing.
The writer behind the project, Yassir Lester, who was also first involved with the series and has moved to the film side of things, offers an update.
Lester jokes to Movie Web that at first he can’t talk about it, but then says Armor Wars is still in development. However, he also compares the project to Blade, which just saw it’s release date yanked by Disney, whose future is also in question:
“In the same way ‘Blade’ [starring Mahershala Ali] goes away and comes back the next day, ‘Armor Wars’ is — it’ll be a thing that happens every few months, then it won’t happen, then it’ll happen again.”
As pointed out, Don Cheadle, who is supposed to star as Rhodey, also doesn’t know what is going on.
“You can find out and let me know,” Cheadle responded to TV Line when asked if he knows where the movie stands.
It’s pointed out that Armor Wars has been switched from being a TV series to a movie and that there haven’t been any updates.
“Yeah. I think the word that’s the most salient in that sentence is ‘switched.’ [Laughs] I don’t know, I’m not sure where anything is right now. I think things are going through a lot of changes, and we’ll see what happens, we’ll see what it is,” Cheadle said.
Marvel kind of made a mess of things in Secret Invasion when it was revealed Rhodey had been replaced as a Skrull, meaning it wasn’t Rhodey in Avengers: Endgame who was there when his best friend Tony died. TV Line tells Cheadle that they hope Armor Wars happens because if it didn’t happen, it would be sad as that means the last time we saw Rhodey that had any meaning, it wasn’t Rhodey.
“Yeah, no s–t,” responded Cheadle who said Marvel asked him to agree to be a Skrull as it’s supposed to set up things down the road. “Uh… you know, there was no… it wasn’t a demand. It was a request. ‘What do you think about playing this?’ And it was to set up stuff in the following thing. So, if the following thing happens, and all those things were set up, then that’s one thing. If, as you said, it doesn’t, then we can talk about how I feel about it after!”
What is Armor Wars about?
Armor Wars doesn’t have a director or release date. Back around the time of the 2022 D23 Expo, Marvel released a new logo (above) and teased: “What happens if Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands?”
Cheadle also said at the Ace Universe comic convention around the time that he thinks “the most exciting part is yet to come” for War Machine.
He continued, “I think we don’t really have a super strong idea who he is really, outside of that bubble of the Avengers, outside of necessarily his friendship with Tony, and now he’s gonna kind of be untethered from all of that.”
The actor added, “So it’s an opportunity to really kind of discover who he is in a way that we have not had before with concentrated time and focus on Rhodey and Rhodey’s journey and hopefully some stuff about his past and you know teeing up some things about his potential future. I think those kinds of things were hinted at in an Endgame where this character might go and the things that may be in the offing for him.”
