James Gunn’s Superman continues to perform admirably at the U.S. box office, but its international gross still hasn’t measured up.
Gunn previously commented on the lukewarm foreign response, though—as we’ve covered—his excuses don’t really hold up.
Superman Passes $250M in U.S.
On Wednesday, it was revealed that Superman crossed the $250 million mark domestically, helped by strong turnout on discount Tuesdays.
Last weekend, the film also did slightly better than expected once the actuals came in, dipping just 53.2%.
As of Tuesday, Superman has earned around $253.2 million at the U.S. box office, slightly ahead of The Batman, which made $252.5 million in the same timeframe. Superman has been holding up better during the weekdays. However, its international numbers still lag behind The Batman. With Marvel’s Fantastic Four opening this weekend, Superman will also likely take a significant hit.

Superman vs. Man of Steel: The Numbers Don’t Lie
Before we get into The Batman, let’s address the desperate spin: shills keep comparing Superman’s box office to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel without adjusting for inflation. It’s a blatant attempt to make Superman look like a bigger success than it really is.
But Superman isn’t even close. Adjusted for inflation, Man of Steel pulled in $402,992,540.82 domestically and nearly a billion worldwide with $927,908,620.18. The film came out 12 years ago—you have to adjust for inflation. What the real numbers show is that Man of Steel was seen by way more people, practically double.
In the U.S., during the same 12-day period, Man of Steel earned $304,360,971.51 (adjusted). Again, there’s just no comparison. Sites and social media accounts pushing raw numbers without context are just trying to artificially boost Superman. Honestly, it’s joke reporting.
No $500M Milestone Yet for Superman, Unlike The Batman
Back to The Batman—Warner Bros. seems to be dragging its feet on reporting Superman’s foreign box office. So far, it seems we’re only getting updates on weekends.
While Superman crossed $250 million domestically by its second Wednesday, the trades had already reported The Batman passing $500 million worldwide in that same timeframe.
For Superman to match that, it would’ve needed to pull in another $75 million internationally since Sunday. The Batman managed it easily. Superman doesn’t look like it’s going to.
It’s still the afternoon on the East Coast, so maybe the trades will write up a report about the Superman box office before the end of the day.
