Robert Downey Jr. just dropped a behind-the-scenes image from the set of Avengers: Doomsday.
The pic shows Downey reading Jeremy Renner’s memoir while flexing in a muscle suit—seemingly teasing his confirmed role as Doctor Doom. Downey captioned the post with praise for Renner’s book, calling it “instructive” and “a must read.”
“Reading Renner’s book and feeling stronger already…what a journey to wisdom … very instructive…a must read! @jeremyrenner,” posted RDJ.
Interestingly enough, Jeremy Renner hasn’t been named as part of the recently announced 27-member cast returning for Avengers: Doomsday.

However, maybe Robert Downey Jr. is teasing a different Marvel character?
Legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont may have recently spilled even more about Avengers: Doomsday. During a recent panel at the Huntsville Pop Culture Expo 2025, Claremont referenced the upcoming Marvel movie as featuring “50 superheroes” and “4 supervillains,” teasing it’s “not an X-Men movie — almost, sounds like it.” Clarement went on to say Robert Downey Jr. is playing more than one role an “evil person, Iron Man — wait, that’s confusing — and then he’s playing two other roles.”
Claremont’s comment has sparked speculation that Downey could be pulling triple duty in the film, possibly as a variant Iron Man, Doctor Doom, and someone else entirely.
The writer also dropped additional bombs about Chris Evans, Scarlet Witch, the X-Men, and more.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on May 1, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars gets released May 7, 2027. The Russo brothers are directing and filming is currently underway in the UK.
