Aquaman ‘The Trench’ Spinoff Details Revealed

With Aquaman being such a huge success, WB has announced a spinoff movie with The Trench, and now producer Peter Safran offers new details about the horror flick.

The Trench focuses on the deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking Arthur Curry and Mera in Aquaman, with Sarfan confirming the spinoff will be released prior to the Dec. 16, 2022 release date for Aquaman 2.

“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie,” Safran told THR. “Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”

The Trench has been described as a lower-budget movie, so there should be no problem getting the movie out within a couple of years. Safran also confirmed that Jason Momoa and Amber Heard won’t be appearing as Arthur and Mera, respectively, and noted that it will take place after the first Aquaman.

“We’ve definitely taken a page from our Conjuring playbook, which is: you’ve got the mothership, which is Aquaman, but there are so many great stories to tell within that universe of itself, that Atlantean universe,” Safran explained. “[Walter Hamada], myself and James Wan always shared the same philosophy, which is: you want to do it right. You don’t want to do it fast. You just want to do it right.”
