It’s learned that the Batwoman series will be replacing the Ruby Rose Kate Kane with a new character instead of simply recasting, which means a new face will be under the cowl.

A Batwoman Season 2 casting call has leaked on Reddit, which has been confirmed by the various Hollywood trade sites, that the new Batwoman will be the character of “Ryan Wilder.”

The character of Ryan Wilder is described as:

Female, Mid-late 20s, any ethnicity. Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman. She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today, reformed and sober, Ryan lives in van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk from an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly disciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.

Ryan Wilder also looks to be an all-new character created just for show and has not appeared in DC Comics.

Two weeks ago saw the news hit that Ruby Rose left the Batwoman role and series.

“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Ruby Rose said in a statement at the time. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created,” Rose said. “Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”

Last week also saw Ruby Rose post a rather cryptic message to Instagram stating “those who know, know” regarding the reason she left.

“Thank you everyone for coming on this journey. If I mentioned everyone it would be 1000 tags.. but Thank you to the cast, crew, producers and studio,” posted Rose. “It wasn’t an easy decision but those who know, know.. I didn’t want to not acknowledge everyone involved and how big this was for TV and for our community. I have stayed silent because that’s my choice for now but know I adore you all. I’m sure next season will be amazing also. Xxx *hangs up cowl and cape.”

Following the first news two weeks ago, The CW and WBTV released a joint statement about the departure of Ruby Rose.

“Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best,” the two companies said. “The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”

Batwoman Season 2 is due to premiere in January 2021, and it has also been announced that Batwoman will be a big part of next year’s Arrowverse crossover as it will involve a take on the “World’s Finest” involving Batwoman and the Tyler Hoechlin Superman.
