Estimates are in for Deadpool 2, and it appears the sequel will have an opening weekend less than the expected $130 million.
With its Thursday night previews and Friday opening, it was looking like Deadpool 2 might actually beat the first film’s record R-rated draw, but Saturday numbers were a bit lower, and the Sunday numbers were a lot lower than the first movie.
Deadpool 2 is estimated to have a $125 million opening (the #2 record), which trails the first movie’s $132.4 million.
Estimates have Deadpool 2 with:
- Thurs/Fri: $53.3 million
- Saturday: $40.5 million
- Sunday: $31.2 million
The first movie’s numbers included: $47.3, $42.508 and $42.591 million.
Deadpool 2 did manage to debut with over $300 million worldwide.
A big reason why the first Deadpool movie did so well is because it landed on a 4-day holiday weekend in February, as we see the Sunday number is huge for the first flick–actually larger than the Saturday number.
Deadpool 2 faces Han Solo this coming weekend, which is the 4-day Memorial Day weekend, so it will be interesting to see the box office return for each film.
As of now, Fox Studios has nothing to complain about as Deadpool 2 is the #1 movie in the world and does have the second best opening for an R-rated film.
