Yesterday I went and saw Jim Starlin for Free Comic Book Day, and on my way to the visit, my brother caught up with me to give me back my copy of the Infinity Gauntlet TBP. He has yet to see The Avengers: Infinity War, but asked me if it was true that Adam Warlock appears in the film, which I replied with a big negative.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 happened to feature an Adam Warlock Easter Egg, and since the character was a big part of the Infinity Gauntlet comics, a lot of fans were expecting and hoping for the character to appear in Infinity War.
The writers on the film explained they thought about using the character, but decided against it as it would have required too much backstory in a movie that already featured a lot of Marvel characters.
Now Anthony and Joe Russo let it be known that they never intended for Adam Warlock to appear in Infinity War as well while appearing at an Iowa City high school Q&A.
“That’s a James Gunn thing. We never intended to put Adam Warlock in Infinity War we have so many heroes we have to service that you guys love and give them screentime- because you want to see the hero and villain to have an emotional connection. You wouldn’t have a connection to them- doesn’t have a connection with Thanos and built up story,” the Russos said.
As I previously stated, it makes complete sense to not have Adam Warlock in Infinity War based on the context of the MCU and the movies. It would have required that the character being introduced in a prior movie or even having a solo flick in order to justify use of the character. I suppose it could have been pretty cool to have some mysterious cocoon appear in the movie and out comes Adam Warlock, but apparently the MCU has different plans.
It is speculated AW might be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, but James Gunn hasn’t confirmed use of the character as of yet. Marvel’s Phase 4 plans are going cosmic, so maybe we’ll see Adam Warlock and / or even the Magus eventually.
