Following the release of the new Justice League trailer, a rumor has hit Twitter offering up that Dredd‘s Olivia Thirlby is being eyed to play Batgirl for Joss Whedon.
Joss Whedon was initially brought into the DCEU to do a movie and chose Batgirl prior to taking over directing Justice League from Zack Snyder.
31-year-old Olivia Thirlby is also known for Juno, No Strings Attached, The Darkest Hour, Amazon’s Goliath TV series and has DeTour, White Orchid and Damascus Cover in the works.
Batgirl is currently in development with Joss Whedon directing, writing and producing, and Whedon looks to begin on the film next year.
“[Batgirl] came up, and I started getting obsessed with how a young woman could get hardcore enough to need to put on the cowl. Like, What’s her damage?” Whedon told THR back in April. “She didn’t have her parents killed in an alley. Who is this person, who decides — rather than being forced to by their childhood trauma — decides to pick up this life? How intense and driven that person is … I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
Regarding casting of Batgirl, Joss Whedon previously offered up that he’s searching for “Batgirl” and not just a big-name actress to fill the role.
“I doubt it will be a name. I think this is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl, then you cast her,” Whedon said.
It’s further been said Batgirl in Joss Whedon’s movie will be Barbara Gordon (which most likely means we’ll get to see JK Simmons in Whedon’s Batgirl flick), and also that the Batgirl movie will be a harder-edged storyline similar to the Gail Simone DC Comics comic books.
Batgirl currently has no release date.
