Joss Whedon Batgirl Said To Be Barbara Gordon

Earlier saw the news that Joss Whedon is jumping ship to the DCEU to direct, produce and write a new Batgirl movie.

However, it’s been questioned just which version as in the comics there are different characters that have portrayed Batgirl including Betty Kane, Helena Bertinelli, Cassandra Cain, Stephanie Brown and Barbara Gordon.

According to EW.com, Joss Whedon’s Batgirl movie will follow the Barbara Gordon version (which means we’ll most likely also see J.K. Simmons in the film, as Simmons is playing Commissioner Gordon in the DCEU Justice League and Batman movies). Ā

EW.com also reports the Joss Whedon Barbara Gordon movie will follow the Gail Simone DC comic book in that it will be a harder-edged storyline – like Simone’s comic – rather than the more ā€œcomical, playful ā€˜Batgirl of Burnside’ series that was rebooted in 2014, featuring the hero as a social-media obsessedĀ student living in a hipster neighborhood of Gotham.ā€

The Gail Simone Batgirl comics follow Barbara Gordon after she was attacked and paralyzed by the Joker in Batman: The Killing Joke, which may mean Batgirl, similar to Affleck’s Batman (and assumed Nightwing) is already a part of the DCEU (and might not go through an origin story; again similar to Affleck’s Batman). Ā

It is noted it’s unclear how much of Whedon’s Batgirl movie will incorporate Gail Simone’s Batgirl work, but the point seems to be Whedon’s Batgirl will be more edgier/darker than the goofy take of Batgirl as a social media hipster.
