While Dredd 2 isn’t happening, a new Dredd TV series is in development!
Dredd: Mega City One is being developed as a TV series from Rebellion, the company that publishes the 2000AD comics, and from IM Global studio, with the series described as “big-budget.”
Dredd: Mega City One will film in the UK with the cast to be announced at a later time.
“We’re very excited to be beginning the journey to get more of Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One on the television screen,” Jason and Chris Kingsley, the owners of Rebellion, said in a statment, reports the BBC. “Thanks to the legions of fans who have kept up pressure on social media, and a lot of background work and enthusiasm, we aim to make a big budget production that will satisfy both our vast comics audience and the even greater general screen-watching public.”
Mark Stern is executive producer on Dredd: Mega City One, whose previous credits include Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica, with Stern describing the Dredd TV series as “one of those seminal sci-fi properties that seems to only become and more relevant with age. Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it’s also fun as hell. As a fan of the comics and both films, it’s a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris in adapting this for television.”
Karl Urban portrayed Dredd, the futuristic cop with the power of a judge, jury and executioner, back in 2012 in the cult hit movie, which didn’t do well at the box office, but went on to get a large fan following through home video sales. It doesn’t sound like Karl Urban will be back for the Dredd TV series as some reports are calling the Dredd TV series a reboot.
Sylvester Stallone also played the character in the 1995 Judge Dredd film.
