We told the so-called DC scoopers to be careful and now the latest is that the co-head of the DCU, James Gunn, has shot down claims that he and Peter Safran were exploring the possibility of bringing in the Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson Batman to the greater DC universe.
In Variety’s report about “Robert Pattinson’s Batman on Deck, ‘Aquaman 2’s’ $205 Million Budget: The Tricky Road Ahead for DC,” the site claims that “a well-placed source says Gunn and Safran are exploring the possibility of incorporating filmmaker Matt Reeves’ iteration of Batman with actor Robert Pattinson into their wider universe.”
However, according to James Gun, that’s not true.
“There are few reporters I love more than @adambvary – truly a good guy – but in this case he needs to get a new source as this is entirely untrue,” Gunn shot back.
Update: Matt Reeves also confirms as Reeves “liked” Gunn’s tweet on Twitter.
Will the Justice League undergo a reboot?
There is actually a rumor that states just the opposite, that the Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson Batman are going to be phased out of the DCEU once Reeves is done with his take on the Dark Knight and that a soft reboot of the Justice League is going to happen.
I was actually told back in 2019 when I attended the San Diego Comic-Con that James Gunn was involved with a DCEU reboot also involving J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves; however, a lot has changed since then as Gunn is now in charge, but it does seem as if some sort of reboot is going to take place.
The article at Variety does make a good point in that they have to balance how all the announcements and news get released as if they announce all the new stuff (again, assuming some sort of reboot) prior to the upcoming DC slate of movies that includes Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Last Kingdom, those movies might be looked at as “old news,” particularly I think with Aquaman 2 which is due out next December, a year away, and has been reported to be going through massive changes.
Variety adds that the head of Warner Bros. had to tell Aquaman 2 director James Wan to reduce his budget for reshoots, which according to the site, has already expanded to $205 million over production and any tweaks could cost millions more.
