James Gunn Confirms Superman, DCU Projects Will Be Unique

At New York Comic-Con last weekend, James Gunn spoke about how Creature Commandos fits into the broader DCU, while making it clear that the other DC projects will have their own unique identity.

“This show is its own thing,” Gunn explained. He emphasized that “every single project that comes out of DC Studios is going to be its own thing.”

He contrasted Creature Commandos with other upcoming DC projects like Superman and Peacemaker.

“We want this to be very different from what Superman is going to be when that comes out. We want Peacemaker to be different from that when that comes out,” he said (later on in the panel, Gunn also talked about the Superman trailer release and how David Corenswet is going to blow people the f’k away).

Gunn also touched on the progress of other DC titles in development.

“Right now, Anna [Nogueira] and Craig [Gillespie] are dealing with Supergirl, and it’s just going tremendously well,” Gunn said (talks more Supergirl here including specific details).

Additionally, he mentioned the Lanterns TV series starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart (talks more about Lanterns here).

“We have Chris [Mundy] and Damon [Lindelof] and Tom [King] who are dealing with Lanterns,” Gunn said adding they are “getting ready to shoot that, and that’s been amazingly well.”

Despite the shared universe, Gunn reinforced that “every one of those things is going to be very different.”

“It’s a connected universe but we’re not imposing any sort of overall aesthetic, and the Creature Commando shows definitely its own thing as you can see,” Gunn shared.

Creature Commandos gets released Dec. 5 on HBO and Max; Superman gets released on July 11, 2025, and Supergirl has a June 26, 2026 release date.
