Wolverine Rumors Surface Again: MCU X-Men May Start Without Logan After Secret Wars

The Wolverine rumors are back again, and they’re saying more of the same: Marvel Studios may keep Logan out of the MCU’s X-Men at the start, even after Avengers: Secret Wars.

That wouldn’t exactly be new.

We covered this back in 2023 when word first surfaced that Wolverine could get solo treatment before ever joining the MCU’s X-Men.

The same basic claim popped up again a year later, and now it’s making the rounds once more two years after that.

The idea hasn’t changed much. If true, Kevin Feige may be building the mutant side of the MCU without making Wolverine the immediate centerpiece.

Wolverine Wasn’t There At The Start In The Comics

What makes the rumor interesting is that it actually lines up with Marvel Comics history.

Wolverine wasn’t part of the X-Men from the beginning. He first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180 and #181 in 1974, where he debuted opposite Hulk before later joining the X-Men with Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975.

So if Feige holds Logan back at first, that could be Marvel sticking closer to the source material instead of dropping Wolverine front and center on day one and making it be all about him.

That also opens the door for a more comic-accurate rollout where Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Beast, and the rest of the mutant corner get room to breathe before Wolverine takes over the spotlight.

Hugh Jackman Responds to Avengers: Doomsday Rumors: 'Dominate and Destroy'

Hugh Jackman Rumors Haven’t Gone Away

There’s also the other side of this.

Rumors have claimed Feige still wants Hugh Jackman involved after Secret Wars, which could explain why Wolverine might be kept separate from the core X-Men reboot.

Instead of using Logan in the team movie right away, Marvel could continue with Jackman in solo appearances or event-style projects.

That possibility gets even more interesting because a Hulk vs. Wolverine project has also been rumored more than once.

Again, that would sync with Wolverine’s comic roots, since Logan first arrived through Hulk before he ever became one of Marvel’s most popular X-Men.

But A New Wolverine Has Also Been Rumored

At the same time, the opposite rumor has also been floating around for a while: Marvel is expected to eventually cast a new Wolverine for the MCU.

Cosmic Book News previously reported Henry Cavill was in the mix to remain involved as Wolverine following Deadpool & Wolverine. After that reporting, John Campea also said Cavill was still in talks with Marvel after the movie, which only added more fuel to the speculation.

So there may not be a contradiction here at all. Marvel could use Jackman in the near term while still planning a long-term replacement for the rebooted mutant era.

Feige Has Already Pointed To The Mutant Era After Secret Wars

What Feige has made clear is that Secret Wars is meant to lead Marvel into the next phase centered on mutants and the X-Men.

Variety previously reported that Feige said Avengers: Secret Wars will lead into a “new age of mutants and of the X-Men,” which fits everything fans have been expecting about the MCU reboot on the other side of the Multiverse Saga.

Entertainment Weekly also recently reinforced that X-Men characters are a major part of the buildup around Avengers: Doomsday.

So the real question may not be whether mutants are coming. They are. The question is whether Wolverine is part of that opening lineup.

If these latest rumors are true, he won’t be.

Jean Grey Rumors Could Already Be Teasing The Future

There’s also another rumor worth watching.

Claims continue to say Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and will later carry that role into the MCU’s X-Men reboot.

That has not been officially confirmed by Marvel or Sony, but the rumor has picked up traction again in recent weeks.

If that turns out to be true, it would suggest Marvel is already planting the seeds for its mutant future, and notably, Jean Grey could arrive before Wolverine does.

That would be a major shift from how Fox handled the X-Men for years, where Wolverine often dominated the franchise.

Marvel May Be Flipping The Formula

For two decades, Wolverine has been the face of the X-Men on screen at Fox Marvel. But the comics didn’t start that way, and maybe the MCU won’t either.

If Feige really is saving Wolverine for later, keeping Hugh Jackman around for separate projects, or building toward a Hulk vs. Wolverine movie before introducing a new Logan into the team, then Marvel may be trying to reset the mutant brand in a way that feels different from Fox.

And honestly, that might not be the worst idea.

The X-Men are bigger than Wolverine, even if Hollywood – and the movie fans – have often acted like they aren’t.
