It’s claimed the Henry Cavill live-action Voltron movie will go straight to streaming, skipping a theatrical release.
The film is at Amazon Prime Studios, which did the same with Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal—prompting backlash from director Doug Liman, who isn’t returning for the sequel.
Amazon Plans Streaming-Only Release for Voltron, Like Road House
The news about Voltron going straight to streaming comes via The Wrap in its report how the Henry Cavill and Chad Stahelski Highlander movie is now at Amazon, and that Amazon is developing a lot of high-profile ’80s properties as feature films:
While no release date for “Voltron” has been set, principal photography, which began in December 2024, wrapped recently in Australia. Despite Amazon’s commitment to theatrical exhibition, “Voltron” is going straight to their Prime Video streaming service. “Road House,” another resurrection of a cult 1980s IP, debuted exclusively on Prime Video and was a huge hit, with a sequel, directed by Ritchie, currently in the works.

Disappointing news
I believe this is the first we’ve heard that Voltron is going straight to streaming, but it is a disappointment. Assuming the film is any good, it would have been awesome to see the Lions, Voltron and the cast including Henry Cavill on the big screen, especially IMAX theaters.
It could be possible The Wrap doesn’t have the right info. However, Voltron is from director Rawson Marshall Thurber who recently was behind the big-budget Red Notice film starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot that was developed and released directly on Netflix.

Voltron details
Voltron recently wrapped filming in Australia. Plot details are being kept under wraps. The film has no release date.
Who stars?
The cast includes Henry Cavill (spotted in Australia with his family), Rita Ora (who may be playing Haggar the Witch), Sterling K. Brown, Alba Baptista (recently seen on set with husband Chris Evans), Daniel Quinn-Toye, Samson Kayo, John Kim, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, and Tim Griffin.
IMDb has confirmed actors playing Galrans, with Italian actor Roberto Zenca listed as the “Galran Emperor,” who could be Emperor Zarkon, the ruthless ruler of the Galra Empire and the main antagonist in the original Voltron series. Matthew Scully is also listed as playing a “Galran Officer.”

Reimagining introducing brand-new generation of pilots
Rawson Marshall Thurber previously teased that the movie is a reimagining and will introduce a brand-new generation of pilots.
“You know, I loved Voltron since I was a boy, and I wanted to make this movie since I was eight years old,” Thurber said. “To finally bring Voltron to life is beyond thrilling. We’ve reimagined Voltron for the live-action world but we’re going to stay true to the heart and the spirit of Voltron and those iconic elements that you love — that I love.”
He added:
“It’s taken us forty years to get here, but I promise you it will be worth the wait.”
