Marvel’s shift in priorities includes canceling the planned Black Panther spinoff series, which was set to focus on Okoye, played by Danai Gurira.
Word once again comes from Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum who recently confirmed Moon Knight has also been canceled and won’t get a second season.
“I think fans of Okoye are going to be excited to see her come back, but I don’t think it’s going to be in a television show,” Winderbaum told the Pay or Wait YouTube channel. “I can’t say where and when, but I think there’s a lot to look forward to.”
What was the Black Panther spinoff about?
The series was said to be title Okoye and the Midnight Angels and follow Gurira as the titular character in what sounds like a lone wolf type of story.
“[Ryan Coogler] was saying it’s like that kung fu show, where the guy just walked the earth,” Gurira said back in 2022. “She just walks off. We don’t know where Okoye’s going. And she’s sort of letting go. She was fighting to keep that position, and then she lets it go. That’s kind of her arc, that she lets go. And we don’t know where that leads to.”
There was chatter Okoye and the Midnight Angels would be folded into a World of Wakanda live-action series, but it seems World of Wakanda might not be happening as well.
Marvel’s shift in priorities
Winderbaum has also confirmed they aren’t moving forward on Nova and said, “We’re making shows as shows that can exist as annual releases, more like television.”
So it seems as if Marvel TV wants shows that will have more than one season as opposed to all the previous one-and-done – and expensive – MCU shows on Disney+.
What’s next for Marvel TV?
Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 premiers March 4 and Season 2 is in the works. Ironheart and Wonder Man are said to be getting released soon. After that, Marvel TV has yet to announce anything new.
What’s next for Black Panther?
Black Panther 3 is confirmed in development and will be released after the next Avengers movies. Ryan Coogler is writing and is expected back to direct. No release date has been announced as of yet. Denzel Washington let it slip Coogler is writing a part for him.
