Perhaps fitting with recent rumors, Wyatt Russell talks Thunderbolts and says it’s not a straightforward Marvel movie and it’s a little different.
A previous description for the flick has said it’s less similar to DC’s Suicide Squad and more in tone with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The rumor claims it’s about a group of losers that band together to form a makeshift family.
On Wednesday, Wyatt Russell appeared at an event for 92NY along with his father, Kurt Russell, to promote the release of Apple TV+’s Godzilla Monarch series and mentioned Thunderbolts.
Russel revealed (via THR), “We have almost started shooting that about 14 times [because of the strikes],” and added he has not read a finished script.
“I have confidence it’s gonna be good,” Wyatt said. “I know everybody is sort of on this Marvel train right now of things not going so well.”
Russell continued with a mention of director Jake Schreier.
“I know Jake so well and I know how smart Jake is and how much he cares about making something interesting and different and utilizing everyone’s talents to the best of their ability. And the story that I think they’ve come up with is really interesting — I know parts of the story and how the story works, I can’t talk about it. But it’s not a straightforward Marvel movie as you’ve seen in the past,” he said.
Russell continued, “I think that it’s gonna be a lot of fun but I think it will be something that hopefully Marvel fans will look at and go, ‘Oh OK, this is a little different, let’s go hard at it.’ And as far as how we are approaching it, it’s time to go to work a little bit, it’s time to make a good Marvel movie, so let’s do that and work hard at it and don’t take things for granted.”
Steven Yeun playing The Sentry
There are rumors Marvel might cancel the film, but it did just get a new July 25, 2025 release date.
The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirman also recently confirmed that Steven Yeun is playing The Sentry.
Also starring in Thunderbolts includes Florence Pugh as Yelena, the new Black Widow; Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier; David Harbour as Red Guardian; Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurilenko as Taskmaster, with Harrison Ford said to be returning from Captain America: Brave New World as Thaddeus Ross aka Red Hulk.
David Harbour also described the movie.
“It’ll be funny. It’ll be weird. It’ll be action. And then we’re also going to drop a bomb, which is cool,” he said in a previous interview with io9.
