Zack Snyder Praises Michael Shannon’s Zod: ‘He Understood Him Down To The Bone’

Zack Snyder has posted another striking DCEU-era image, this time featuring Michael Shannon as General Zod from Man of Steel.

Snyder captioned the photo simply: “I will find him. Michael Shannon understood Zod down to the bone.”

The black-and-white portrait highlights Shannon’s intense portrayal of Superman’s Kryptonian nemesis, one of the most memorable performances in the DCEU.

Michael Shannon Looks Back On Man of Steel

Michael Shannon has recently been reflecting on his role as Zod and the impact of Man of Steel.

Back in an interview in November with Vanity Fair, Shannon defended the controversial decision at the end of the film, the moment Superman is forced to kill Zod to save innocent lives.

He acknowledged that the scene sparked debate, but said he was proud to be part of the story Snyder told and enjoyed working on the film.

Shannon explained that Zack Snyder intentionally put Superman in a position where the hero had no choice but to make an impossible decision, and Shannon said he personally loved the collaboration and the creative approach taken.

“I guess one of the controversies with this film—and Zack engineered this really—is that Superman is not supposed to kill anybody, so I put him in a situation where if he wants to save these people, he has to kill me, and he does, and that obviously led to a lot of sturm und drang, or whatever you say,” Shannon said.

He continued, “I really loved working with Zack, and I really loved making this movie. I think a lot of people say, ‘Oh, you know, this isn’t what he usually does. He just went for the big payday or something.’ But I’m proud of this movie. I think it’s actually about something.”
