WWE Acquires AAA, Launches ‘Worlds Collide’ with Lucha Libre Stars

WWE has officially announced its acquisition of AAA, the top Mexican lucha libre promotion, in partnership with the Mexico-based sports and entertainment firm Fillip.

The news dropped during the WrestleMania 41 Countdown show in Las Vegas.

WWE Expands into Lucha Libre

Founded in 1992 by Antonio Peña, AAA has built a massive following with legends like Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and Penta passing through its doors. Now, WWE and Fillip are bringing AAA under the TKO Group umbrella. The Peña family will remain involved.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE’s Chief Content Officer, emphasized the deal’s cultural and fan significance, calling it an “honor to work with the Peña family.” He noted the partnership aims to combine WWE’s global reach with AAA’s deep-rooted tradition.

“AAA has a rich cultural heritage with some of the most passionate fans in the world and it’s an honor to work with the Peña family to embark on this journey,” said Levesque in a statement. “By bringing together WWE’s global capabilities and AAA’s amazing tradition, we look forward to an exciting future filled with new opportunities.”

Fillip Co-CEO Hugo López-Velarde called the move a way to “secure the future of AAA for fans” and expand its business.

“We look forward to partnering with WWE and TKO on this venture to secure the future of AAA for fans and to help take this business to the next level,” said Fillip Co-Founder and Co-CEO Hugo López-Velarde.

“AAA has been a family-operated promotion for over three decades and our trust could not be better placed than with one of the biggest sports entertainment businesses in the world,” added AAA General Manager Dorian Roldán Peña.
