Wonder Woman Video Game Canceled Amid WB Closing Studios, MultiVersus

Wonder Woman Video Game Canceled

The Wonder Woman video game that has been in development since at least 2021 has officially been canceled. Warner Bros. confirmed the cancellation amid the announcement it is closing three of its gaming studios, which includes the developers behind the MultiVersus video game.

Reports have offered that Warner Bros. Gaming already dumped $100 million into the Wonder Woman game and that it had even rebooted the project but that it was still years away. Well, it’s not happening.

Wonder Woman game not moving forward

Warner Bros. Gaming confirmed Monolith Productions is being shut down, the developer of the Wonder Woman game.

The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game will not move forward,” WB Games said in part in a statement. “Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities.” Read the full statement below.

Likewise, the two developers behind MultiVersus, WB San Diego and Player First Games, is getting shut down.

Focusing on proven concepts like Batman, Harry Potter

Warner Bros. has announced they instead plan on focusing on Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones (that DC game looks to be a new Batman game from Rocksteady).

Worth a mention is that all of the aforementioned are proven brands and concepts, as Mortal Kombat has been around for years, the Harry Potter Hogwarts game at WB is huge, the Rocksteady Batman games are super popular, and Game of Thrones is still a relevant IP (the Kingsroad game gets released this year). Recently saw WB lose hundreds of millions due to the failure of the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League game, so it’s pretty obvious WB Games is shifting its focus to what works. The Wonder Woman 1984 movie released in 2020 also bombed hard.

Warner Bros. Games’ official statement

Here is WB’s announcement (via Kotaku):

“We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building then est games possible with our key franchises — Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of the teams or the talent that consists within them. The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game will not move forward. Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games. We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions. As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world-class studios and getting our games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.”

What was the Wonder Woman video game about?

Per the official info, the untitled Wonder Woman game was going to be a single-player open-world action-adventure game that told an original story set within the DC Universe. The game was going to allow players to become Diana of Themyscira in the fight to unite her Amazon family along with the humans from the modern world.

Wonder Woman was going to be powered by Monolith’s Nemesis System, where gamers would have forged deep connections with both enemies and allies as they progressed from a heroic fighter into a proven leader.
