Activate interlock! Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Mega thrusters are go! The highly anticipated live-action Voltron movie has officially started filming in Australia under the direction of Rawson Marshall Thurber. The news comes from the official Voltron account and producer Bob Koplar, who confirmed, “Cameras are rolling!”
Fans also got a sneak peek at what appears to be the updated Voltron movie logo, offering a blend of nostalgia and modern design.
A New Look for Voltron
The movie logo pays homage to the classic Voltron: Defender of the Universe logo while introducing subtle changes. The iconic blazing sword still forms the “T,” but the “V” now extends on the left side, and the “R” features an elongated bottom.
Australia excited for Voltron
Australia’s Screen Queensland government agency also confirmed filming.
“I look forward to Amazon MGM’s production of Voltron commencing filming and its welcome injection of more than $100 million to Queensland’s economy including hundreds of screen industry jobs and a significant boost for local businesses,” said Minister for the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek.
Jacqui Feeney, Screen Queensland CEO added, “Voltron will employ approximately 825 screen practitioners at Village Roadshow Studios and provide invaluable on-set training opportunities to emerging crew on this high-caliber production.”
Henry Cavill Joins a Star-Studded Cast
Regarding Henry Cavill, last week saw that new photo of him sporting his curly locks surface at an airport (above), leading to speculation he left for Australia. However, earlier today saw the news about Warhammer where Cavill posted he was at a local gaming shop in his hometown. It’s unclear if Henry posted an older photo of himself at the gaming shop or if hasn’t yet arrived in Australia to film Voltron.
Cavill leads a diverse cast that includes ,Daniel Quinn-Toye, Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, John Kim, Tharanya Tharan,Laura Gordon, and Tim Griffin.
Director Promises a Fresh Take on Voltron
Rawson Marshall Thurber has teased that the movie will “introduce an entirely new generation of pilots.” While the story is updated for a live-action format, he assured fans it would remain true to the heart of Voltron. “We’re going to stay true to the iconic elements that you love,” Thurber said.
Exploring the World of Voltron
Early production notes from Thurber offer a glimpse into the movie’s set design, which includes locations like the “Common Room,” the “War Room,” and the “Hall of Heroes.” Fans will recognize nods to Voltron lore, such as the Balto Grand Hall, which references the planet Balto from the original series, the home planet of Pidge and his brother.
Scenes are color-coded, seemingly corresponding to the five lions that form Voltron:
- Green Lion’s Den
- Yellow Lion Cockpit
- Blue Lion Cockpit
- Red Lion Cockpit
- Black Lion Cockpit
Additional settings include the “Throne Room,” “King’s Chamber,” and “Gothic Spire,” all hinting at a detailed universe for the film from the original material.
