Tom Hardy may not be done with MobLand after all, as a new report says the actor was not fired and discussions are now underway for his possible return.
The update comes after a week of reports claiming Hardy was out of the hit Paramount+ crime series following behind-the-scenes clashes with producers.
Now a new report says that Hardy “was not fired,” the door is still open for Season 3, and “things are being worked through creatively.”
It’s a major shift after previous reports made it sound like Paramount and producers were already preparing to move ahead without him.
Tom Hardy Was Not Fired, Says New Report
According to Variety, sources say Hardy was not officially fired from MobLand and talks are underway to find a way for him to return as Harry Da Souza.
A source close to production told the outlet, “Tom was not fired, the door is not closed for Season 3 and things are being worked through creatively.”
Variety also reports that Season 3 was expected to go into production this fall with Hardy reprising his role, though Paramount+ has not officially announced the renewal.
The report follows earlier claims from Puck News that Hardy had been fired after clashes with executive producer Jez Butterworth, producer David Glasser, and others at the production company, 101 Studios.
Variety says the tensions were real, but the situation is not as final as previously reported.
The outlet also adds that there were no problems with actress Helen Mirren. The actress posted her support for Hardy on social media: “Love you now and always, Helen.”
Both Sides Reportedly Had Issues
The new report also adds more context to what may have been going on behind the scenes.
Variety says the fallout involved a combination of factors, including reports of Hardy’s tardiness on set and his push to rewrite parts of the script. However, sources also claim there was fault on both sides.
One issue reportedly involved scripts being delivered late, sometimes only a week before filming. That apparently clashed with Hardy’s process, as one source said, “Tom likes to prepare.”
Another reported problem was that Butterworth was not always present on set to handle script issues when they came up.
One source said Hardy’s ideas were often “very sound,” but became a problem when there was no clear path to address them during production.
In other words, this may not be as simple as Hardy being difficult.
It sounds like a messy production situation where the star, producers, and writers were not on the same page.
Guy Ritchie May Be Key To Fixing It
Variety also reports that Guy Ritchie, executive producer on MobLand, may be pushing to make the situation work.
One production source told the outlet, “I’m sure Guy is probably pushing David Glasser to make it work,” adding that Ritchie likes working with Hardy.
Ritchie and Hardy have a long working relationship going back to RocknRolla, and the report says Hardy is better behaved when working with Ritchie because there is trust between them.
The same source said Ritchie can tell Hardy to “stop f-cking about,” and Hardy takes it in good humor.
Hardy is reportedly still needed for Season 2 reshoots, which also gives Paramount and producers more reason to find a compromise.
Paramount May Have Realized MobLand Needs Tom Hardy
The fan response to the reports has been overwhelmingly in favor of Hardy, with many viewers making it clear they have little interest in watching MobLand without him.
Fans have also been comparing the situation to The Witcher, which moved on after Henry Cavill exited and replaced him with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt. The show continued, but many fans checked out because Cavill was the reason they trusted the series in the first place.
MobLand risks the same problem if Hardy is written out or replaced.
Variety even notes that recasting Hardy’s role is considered highly unlikely, while one source admitted the show would probably lose a fair number of viewers without him.
