Thor: Ragnaok: Grandmaster Loves Experts In Combat

In Thor: Ragnarok, Jeff Goldblum plays the Grandmaster, the brother to Benicio Del Toro’s The Collector from James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

The Grandmaster happens to be the ruler of Sakaar where Total Film Magazine describes him as “an ancient being whose word is law on the world he built” and “one thing he values above all else is prowess in combat, which he puts to test in his own coliseum.”

“Like anybody whose is really powerful  – Vito Corleone or somebody who runs a film studio – he doesn’t have to prove it,” Goldblum said about his Gransmaster. “He’s very present and interested in the pleasures and annoyances of moment-to-moment life.”

The article also notes that director Taika Waititi wanted his Grandmaster “to be not so theatrical, in contrast to The Collector.”

“Taika didn’t want anything cartoony,” Goldblum confirms. “He wanted qualities that were in some of my behavior in contemporary life.”

The article also describes Grandmaster’s Sakaar, which is “literally a trash planet” with no natural resources and everything from the building materials to the food falls from the wormhole that dominates the skyline. It’s noted the market place features just about everything including McDonald’s bags, scrap, machine parts, and what looks to be the Hulk’s quinjet from Avengers 2 is spotted in the back all stripped down.

Head on over to find out what the Hulk’s been up to since Avengers 2, and further Thor: Ragnrok spoiler-y details are here.

Thor: Raganarok has a November 3, 2017 release directed by Taika Waititi starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk/Banner, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Sam Neill in an unknown role.
