Thor 5 is said to be in development at Marvel Studios with it claimed the fifth flick in the franchise will feature a darker tone. It’s also said Gareth Edwards is wanted to direct the movie (via DanielRPK).
Gareth Edwards is known for directing Monsters, Godzilla (2014), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and recently The Creator starring John David Washington.
Update: Edwards responds to the rumor and shoots it down.
What about Taika Waititi?
Regarding Taika Waititi, he won’t be coming back as Waititi has confirmed he isn’t returning and is not involved with any Thor 5 movies at Marvel.
In addition, Waitiiti recently said he only directed the Thor movies at Marvel for the money and doesn’t even like the character. Waititi is now working on his other projects including Star Wars.
What about Chris Hemsworth?
Chris Hemsworth has said he would return but only if the franchise goes in a different direction, which a darker tone would be. Hemsworth admitted Love and Thunder was too goofy, but is open to returning to the role.
“I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly,” Hemsworth filled in Variety about Thor: Love and Thunder back in June. “It’s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective…I love the process, it’s always a ride. But you just don’t know how people are going to respond.
“I love the experience,” Hemsworth continued. “I love the fact that I’ve been able to do something fairly different throughout the process. ‘Thor 1’ and 2 were their own thing, ‘Thor 3’ and 4 were a very different feel…and then even ‘Avengers,’ the Lebowski Thor, the ‘Infinity War’ Thor, due to different directors and I think mostly my own need to do something different.”
While Bob Iger has said too many sequels are a reason for the recent failure of the MCU, that’s not really the case, as what is causing the failure is the injection of politics in favor of a quality story. Fans don’t have superhero fatigue, they have fatigue of bad content.
The Avengers may re-assemble
With Chris Hemsworth possibly coming back, it has also been said Marvel is considering reuniting The Avengers. Kevin Feige has confirmed a project is in the works with Scarlett Johansson, and rumors offer Robert Downey Jr. will be back along with Chris Evans.
It’s possible it could all happen in Avengers: Secret Wars, said to be a Multiverse movie featuring many Variants of the Marvel characters. That could be a way of explaining the return of dead characters, as those characters would stay dead, but different versions from different universes would appear in Secret Wars. Another option is time travel, as it has been rumored Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Evans are involved in a series where Evans as Captain America goes back in time.
Marvel Comics also launched Ultimate Thor which matches up with the rumors of a darker tone in the MCU. I’s thought Marvel Comics has basically become the MCU’s playground testing out various storylines that the MCU might want to adapt.
