It’s again claimed that Disney and Lucasfilm are considering releasing The Mandalorian Season 4 as a movie but it’s now said it might be the next Star Wars film instead of the new Rey movie.
Previous rumors have offered that instead of Season 4 getting released on the Disney+ streaming service, Lucasfilm will instead release the season as a movie on the big screen.
If so, that would mean The Mandalorian Season 4 would be the first Star Wars movie to be released in seven years, since the release of The Rise of Skywalker.
Disney has set Star Wars movie release dates for May 22, 2026, December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, and while it was thought the May 22 release was for Rey, according to Jeff Sneider, the Mando movie might get that first 2026 release date.
Sneider, via The Hot Mic, says fans need to keep in mind that the strikes changed a lot of stuff including schedules, scripts, availability, and financial situations.
“My Disney source reached out because they heard I said they have their lead for Star Wars or whatever. Doesn’t sound that is necessarily the case but here is a reason for that,” he explained. “So this is what I found out. I think we’ve all been operating under the impression that the Daisy Ridley Star Wars movie was going to be the next Star Wars movie. It doesn’t sound like that may be the next one.”
Sneider continues explaining that he previously shot down the rumor that The Mandalorian Season 4 could be turned into a movie, however, he says that is what he is now starting to hear.
“That the odds are in that project’s favor. Whatever Season 4 of The Mandalorian turns out to be, whoever is in it, what shape it takes, it is looking like that good be the next Star Wars movie and that may be the thing that is announced before the end of the year,” he said. “I think those The Mandalorian Season 4 movie rumors, I think there were something to those.”
Sneider did say to take the info as a rumor for now.
“That’s not confirmed that’s just a rumor at this point. It remains a rumor but when I start hearing it from my person it’s like ‘Oh, where there is smoke there’s fire,'” he said.
What is going on with the Star Wars movies?
Lucasfilm also has the Dave Filoni movie in development (the rumored title is “Heir to the Empire”), the Taika Waititi film, and as mentioned above, the new Daisy Ridley Star Wars movie (the rumored title is “Star Wars Episode X: A New Beginning”).
However, it has recently been said the Daisy Ridley Star Wars movie suffered a setback and has been delayed as the script isn’t ready. A production listing with outdated information states the flick is supposed to start filming in April, but according to a Star Wars fan site, that isn’t true.
It was thought the Dave Filoni movie might have taken the first 2026 release, but maybe it’s not ready as well, so the film could get released either on December 18, 2026, or December 17, 2027.
It is known The Mandalorian Season 4 is set to start production soon, so it sounds like the series is much further ahead than any of the movies that are in development, so just maybe the new season will turn into a feature film.
Regarding the Taika Waititi Star Wars movie, that too, is presently not finished, as Waititi has admitted he has been working on the movie for three years and hasn’t yet finished the script.
Both the Taika Waititi Star Wars movie and the Rey movie are also rumored not to be happening.
If that is the case, the 2026 releases indeed might be Mando Season 4 and the Filoni movie. That would make sense as Filoni, recently named as Lucafilm’s new chief creative officer, is directly handling both properties.
