Could Star Wars really be up for sale? A financial insider claims Disney has been shopping the franchise for months—but can’t find a buyer.
The rumor follows another rumor from back in 2023 that said Disney CEO Bob Iger put restraints on Kathleen Kennedy and Star Wars, with it claimed at the time that Iger wants to sell Star Wars but keep Marvel.
What does the rumor say?
The claim comes from Film Threat’s Chris Gore, who previously leaked Marvel’s firing of top producers. According to Gore, a financial insider told him Disney has been quietly shopping Star Wars for months—with no takers.
“This is from a friend who is not in the nerd space, not in the YouTube space, not a media person—this is a friend in the world of finance,” Gore stated (via That Park Place). “A trusted individual who says for seven months they have put feelers out about selling Star Wars.”
Gore added, “They have been shopping it for seven months and can’t find a buyer.”

Is Disney really selling Star Wars?
There are signs that a Star Wars sale could be possible. Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down, and Disney has no major Star Wars films in production.
Kathleen Kennedy confirmed an announcement is coming soon.
Presently, only Lucasfilm has The Mandalorian & Grogu on the release slate. No new movies are in production. A new movie hasn’t been released in six years.
Likewise, on the TV Disney+ side of things, Andor gets released in April. It’s said Ahsoka Season 2 is in development but has no release date, with rumors already offering it won’t have a Season 3 and will be canceled. Similar to the movies, no new Star Wars TV shows are in production. Recently saw both Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte massively tank on Disney+.
The timing also lines up with Bob Iger exiting Disney in 2026 who has confirmed streaming lost Disney billions.

Who could buy Star Wars?
Disney bought Lucasfilm/Star Wars from George Lucas back in 2012 for $4 billion. It’s likely the number they are looking for is a lot higher.
If I have to guess, only big tech companies would buy Star Wars, which could include Amazon, Apple, Comcast, and Netflix.
It has been rumored, and I have been told from my Comic-Con insiders, that Apple could buy Disney. Likewise, I’ve been told Comcast (Universal) has been eyeing Warner Bros. Discovery, so maybe they would want Star Wars, which would fit in nicely with their Universal Studios theme park. Of course, Amazon seems to have a never-ending supply of money, too, and could want Star Wars to bolster their Prime Video streaming service. Ditto for the largest streamer, Netflix.
It’s my understanding that the talk in Hollywood is that all the studios are broke, and the big tech companies are waiting to scoop them up for pennies on the dollar.
Another possibility is that Disney licenses out Star Wars so they don’t have to deal with costs and production while still retaining the rights.

Nobody wants Star Wars?
If Disney is really trying to sell Star Wars, why hasn’t anyone bought it?
According to Chris Gore, nobody seems interested in Star Wars. Why? The answer is as plain as day, Kathleen Kennedy has run Star Wars and Lucasfilm into the ground, which also includes Indiana Jones.
Potential buyers probably look at what happened with the movies and TV shows and scoff at purchasing Star Wars for billions and billions. Fans no longer care about the IP. It’s safe to say consumer producers and merchandise is in the gutter. However, I would bet if the price is right someone would scoop it up in a heartbeat, but I’m betting Disney is asking for at least double what they paid, likely more.
