The Batman: Part II In Trouble? 'Nothing Is Close To Being Planned'

The Batman: Part II could be in big trouble as a new report offers nothing close is being planned about the start of production.

In addition, James Gunn offers an update about that script that seems contrary to recent comments made by director Matt Reeves who is supposed to be writing the script.

The info comes with it learned that Robert Pattinson has signed on the new Christopher Nolan movie which features an all-star cast consisting of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Lupita Nyong’o.

The untitled Nolan movie is due out July 17, 2026 from Universal Pictures, three months prior to when Warner Bros. and Reeves’ The Batman: Part II is supposed to get released.

The Batman Part II filming: “Nothing is close to being planned”

So with Pattinson having signed on for the new Nolan, movie how is he also supposed to do The Batman: Part II?

Well, according to a report from THR, way at the bottom of the article it’s mentioned that it was hoped The Batman: Part II would film next year, but it’s said while there is still hope it could happen, “nothing is close to being planned”:

The actor is due to return to Batman for Matt Reeves’ sequel and there was hope that it could shoot sometime next year. Those hopes remain in place but nothing is close to being planned.

What did James Gunn say about The Batman: Part II?

So a reason for the delay(?) for The Batman: Part II is that it seems everyone is waiting on the script from Matt Reeves.

Gunn has previously offered updates that Reeves has yet to turn the script in, as Gunn is co-head of DC Studios, and everything DC falls under him and Peter Safran.

However, in an article published by SFX magazine back in September, Reeves told the outlet that The Batman II is slated to start filming next year, as the script is nearing completion.

Reeves also confirmed Colin Farrell back as Penguin for the sequel, and said that “we’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC and they’re super excited.”

Fans also questioned Gunn about the script a few days ago on Threads, as a user questioned, “James, it was reported a while back that Matt Reeves has already finished the script for The Batman II, is that really true?”

Gunn replied, “I think that report was well-intentioned but it was mistaken. We are very much looking forward to it.”

The response from Gunn indicates that Matt Reeves has yet to finish the script and turn it in.

Will The Batman: Part II release date be delayed?

Per THR above, if The Batman: Part II doesn’t film in 2025, that obviously means filming will happen in 2026, which would mean The Batman: Part II release date would have to be delayed.

Again, The Batman: Part II is slated for an October 2, 2026 release date. Robert Pattinson wouldn’t have signed on to the new Nolan movie if there was going to be a schedule conflict. Pattinson was given the okay to film the Nolan movie because they knew The Batman: Part II wouldn’t be filming at the same time (and isn’t ready).

That said, Tom Holland will be filming the Nolan movie next year and Marvel’s Spider-Man 4 that gets released on July 26, 2026, three months prior to the release of The Batman: Part II. It’s safe to say Pattinson could still film both the Nolan movie and the next Batman. However, again, THR’s sources are offering “nothing is close to being planned” right now.
