We’re Still Not Ruling Out Avengers X-Men Crossover

There’s been rumors stating that Marvel and Fox are planning an Avengers X-Men movie crossover, with one even stating it’s supposed to happen in 2020.

To add fuel to the fire, Kevin Feige booted Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter from being involved with the movies. Perlmutter was a potential roadblock to working with Fox as reportedly Perlmutter is feuding with Fox over the Marvel character film rights.

In addition, Marvel is working with Sony on Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Spidey recently debuted in the MCU during Civil War, leading to speculation an Avengers X-Men movie could happen.

While we can all dream if an Avengers X-Men crossover movie will ever take place, it may not be in the cards, at least according to Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo.

“As far as we know, right now there isn’t talk regarding the X-Men,” Russo said while promoting the Captain America: Civil War Blu-Ray, reports Screen Rant. “I don’t know if behind-the-scenes there were conversations or if there are conversations happening but we certainly haven’t heard of any… Sony and Marvel had a relationship through Kevin [Feige] and Amy [Pascal], and through us and Amy. That’s really how Spider-Man came about. It requires a certain alchemy and a very special situation for studios to share properties. There was not talk on Civil War about the X-Men.”

While Joe Russo offers potential bad news about an Avengers X-Men crossover, the good news is that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige actually has a good relationship with Fox and X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

“I would love it. I would love it,” Donner said a couple of years ago in an interview. “I personally have close ties to Marvel because of Kevin Feige, because Kevin worked for me. But to take our characters and mingle them in the way that they were written, yeah, absolutely.”

Likewise, back in April while promoting Deadpool, Tim Miller and Simon Kinberg offered they would love an Avengers X-Men crossover.

“I would love to some day in part heal the rift between the world of X-Men and the world of Avengers,” Tim Miller said.

“Yeah, I think we all would,” Simon Kinberg added. “There’s so much crossover in the comics it would be neat to one day be able see those characters share a movie.”

“Kevin [Feige] is so awesome,” Miller continued. “Did you see my little pizza box in one of the scenes? ‘Feige’s Famous Pizza’ — that was my little.. trying to bring these worlds together.”

“Both of us are actually quite close with Kevin and have a profound amount of respect for what he does,” Kinberg offered. “And it would be fun to all team up one day, somehow, together, if that could work.”

“I think it’s a super smart move with Spider-Man. I mean, he’s great,” Miller said.

Deadpool also featured a Marvel Studios Hellicarrier at the end of the film (at least in concept art), so maybe we shouldn’t rule out an Avengers X-Men crossover just yet?

New X-Men TV Series Headed To Fox With Bryan Singer Attached

A new X-Men TV series is headed to FOX.

Variety reports the untitled X-Men series will be executive produced by Bryan Singer focusing “on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.”

The new X-Men series, Marvel and Fox’s first, is being written by Burn Notice‘s Matt Nix who will also serve as executive producer in addition to Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.

The project has received a put-pilot commitment from Fox, which means if Fox doesn’t air the pilot episode, they’ll pay a hefty monetary penalty to Marvel (so it’s a safe bet the series is a definite go).

“Developing a Marvel property has been a top priority for the network — and we are so pleased with how Matt Nix has led us into this thrilling universe,” said David Madden, president, entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “There’s comic book adventure, emotional and complicated relationships and a rich, existing mythology from which to draw. With the brilliant production crew behind this project, it has all the makings of a big, fun and exciting new series.”

“Working with Marvel on a television series for Fox has been a professional dream for our head of development, Michael Thorn, and all of us at the studio,” commented Jonathan Davis, president, creative affairs, 20th Century Fox Television. “Matt, Lauren, Bryan, Simon, Jeph and Jim are a powerhouse team of creative artists, and we can’t wait to get started on what will easily be one of this development season’s most exciting new projects.”

“Marvel Television is thrilled to be co-producing with 20th Century Fox Television on our first project,” Jeph Loeb said. “Matt’s a huge fan of ‘X-Men’ and his take on ‘X-Men,’ with its rich characters and high-stakes adventure, is exactly the show we want on Fox. It’s a great team of creative producers who will be making something entirely unique.”

The report also mentions the planned Hellfire TV series has been cancelled.

Legion is also set to debut on FX.

Simon Kinberg Updates Gambit, New Mutants, Deadpool 2, Wolverine & New X-Men Movie

We get an update on the X-Men movie universe from Simon Kinberg at the recent 2016 Saturn awards.

Kinberg offers news on Wolverine, Deadpool 2, a new main X-Men movie, New Mutants and Gambit.

“We’re figuring that out now,” Kingerg responded when asked what’s next from the X-Men franchise. “The first thing up, we’re shooting the Wolverine movie right now, and we start shooting Deadpool 2 at the beginning of next year, and I sit down and start writing the next one of the mainline X-Men movies real soon.”

On New Mutants, Kinberg offered:

“I can’t tell you what the roster is, but I can tell you who the director is, which is Josh Boone who directed Fault In Our Stars,” Kinberg said. “We have a really good script and hoping to shoot that real soon, too. It’s very loyal to the comics. I’ll leave it at that.”

While the release of the Channing Tatum Gambit movie has been delayed, Kinberg says he hopes to film next year.

“Yeah. We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning of Spring of next year.”

Skrulls Are Owned By Both Marvel Studios & Fox Says James Gunn

Just in case you didn’t know, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn says the Skrulls are co-owned by both Marvel Studios and Fox Studios (similar to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver).

Gunn took to Twitter to answer a fan’s question about the Skrulls where he also reveals certain members of the shape-changing alien reptilian race are specificially owned by Fox.

“Some specific Skrulls are at Fox. But the Skrulls as a whole are co-owned,” Gunn said.

While James Gunn didn’t mention the specific Skrulls, we can probably assume those Skrulls with names are owned by Fox, such as the Super-Skrull Kl’rt.

Whether or not Marvel ever uses the Skrulls in a movie is probaby doubtful as Marvel used the Ultimate Comics version of the Skrulls in The Avengers with the Chitauri.

It’s also probably a safe bet Marvel Studios won’t be adapting the Marvel Comics “Secret Invasion” storyline any time soon as it was written by Brian Bendis, a member of the Marvel Comics creative committee that Kevin Feige recently booted from having any involvement in the Marvel movies. Bendis also took the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book away from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning when word of the movie getting green lit became known.

Marvel and Fox Talks Rumored Again (Avengers & X-Men)

Once again it’s being said that Marvel and Fox could potentially come to an understanding.

It’s been rumored that an Avengers and X-Men movie is in the works for quite a while now.

Even the X-Men execs have stated they are interested in working with Marvel.

Now the latest comes from a producer on Kevin Smith’s Fatman on Batman podcast, Matt Key.

Matt Key doesn’t go so far as to make claims that an Avengers and X-Men movie is happening, but he does at least say there has been talk at Fox about hooking up with Marvel.

“I’ve heard from a few of my sources, my little birds that Fox and Marvel have… kind of talked, but not really, but like there’s interest from Fox, like, ‘Ooh, y’know, what they did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe…’ We’re years away from that ever possibly happening… but I think that’s what it would take… Fox joining hands with Marvel…”

If Spider-Man: Homecoming happens to be a billion dollar success, that may give Fox further incentive to work with Marvel.

As noted, if it ever does happen, it looks to be years off.

However, the Avengers and X-Men movie rumor did state 2020, so that’s at least four years away.

X-Men’s Shawn Ashmore Wants To Play Ghost Rider

“An Iceman solo movie? If Fox would make it, I would do it,” Ashmore said. “I love that character. I love the Marvel universe… If that was even an opportunity, absolutely.”

Ashmore went on to state that Iceman probably works better as a member of the X-Men, but when asked if he would play another super hero, he mentioned Ghost Rider.

“I would love to play another super hero. If I could play another super hero – it’s so tough – Marvel-wise, some of my favorite books… I love Nightcrawler, and I love Ghost Rider. I don’t know if I would ever get a chance to play those characters, but I would love to see another take on Ghost Rider.”

Bryan Singer Suggests Mystique X-Men Spinoff Movie

Anybody up for a Mystique X-Men spinoff movie?

X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer recently appeared on an Empire Online podcast and suggested he thinks it’s a good idea.

“I think [Mystique’s] right for [a solo movie], whether it’s Jennifer or not,” Singer said. “[Mystique] as this different view of the world. Xavier can get into Cerebro and look at the world but he’d rather just teach classes and see the beauty of mutants and humans co-existing in his mansion in Westchester. Along comes Raven with a reality check on the state of the world. It opens up a lot of avenues.”

Mystique has appeared in six X-Men movies to date, with Rebecca Romijn first playing the character. Though Lawrence happens to be a more popular actor, I would have to say a majority of fans prefer the Rebecca Romijn version, which is more of a villain, similar to the comics.

The Jennifer Lawrence Mystique has become too much of a hero, at least in my opinion, and was a pretty weak character overall in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Honestly, I would much rather prefer a Psylocke spinoff movie or even Quicksilver.

X-Men: Apocalypse: The Good and the Bad

X-Men: Apocalypse officially kicks off tonight, but yesterday saw advanced screenings take place, which I was privy to.

Currently at Rotten Tomatoes, X-Men: Apocalypse is considered “rotten” with only 47% of the ratings positive.

Audiences listed are giving it a 74% positive rating, so there is a pretty wide gap.

Speaking of the gap, I’ve been traversing the internet checking out fan reaction (reddit is blowing up here), and I think reactions are based on expectations: For example, I went in with low expectations (wasn’t a fan of Days of Future Past or The Wolverine), so I pretty much enjoyed X-Men: Apocalypse; however, if you happen to be a die-hard X-Men fan, this movie probably comes off as disappointing.

So let’s take a look at the good and the bad of X-Men: Apocalypse (Spoilers follow):

The Good:

Opening scene: First Four Horseman: I loved the opening scene set in the past with Apocalypse and his original Four Horseman — those guys were bad ass! The scene got pretty graphic, too, which took me by surprise. The music was pretty epic adding to Apocalypse’s “godlike” presence. Hey, Fox! Can you release the names of the characters and actors! Off to a good start!

Quicksilver: We all recall that first look image of Evan Peters as Quicksilver in X-Men: Days Of Future Past — we all hated it! However, once we saw Quicksilver on screen, the character quickly (no pun intended!) became a fan-favorite and stole the show. Quicksilver steals the show once again in X-Men: Apocalypse. He has by far the best scenes and best written dialogue. How about a spinoff movie?

Psylocke: Olivia Munn was bad ass as well! The look and feel of the character was pretty much straight out of the comics, something which Munn wanted to remain true to. Definitely worked! Another character deserving of a spinoff movie.

Yes. Fox spoiled the ending to the movie the day before its release.

Jean Grey: I’m a fan of Sophie Turner. I dig her in Game of Thrones and felt she played a good enough Jean Grey. What was pretty awesome was when they revealed the Phoenix at the end! Now that was cool to see and might lead into the next X-Men, movie, which may be set in space.

Stan Lee: Always good to see Stan Lee on screen, and this cameo happened to be very special to him because it also featured his wife. Very nice!

Wolverine: I loved the Wolverine scene, it was straight out of the Weapon X comics. We know Hugh Jackman’s time is counting down, so including him with the Berseker Rage was pretty awesome. Thank you!

The Bad:

Visual effects were pretty much crap (guessing this movie is a disaster in 3D).

In my opinion, there is absolutely no excuse for Oscar Isaac to look as bad as he did as Apocalypse. NONE. Especially when they already had a costume designer working on the movie who came up with the exact look out of the comics! But they didn’t use it! This just screams that Fox is too cheap to do the character justice, and it came out as so. The special effects for the rest of the movie were sub bar, IMO, as well.

We could have had this:

But got:

Apocalypse: In addition to the crappy visual effects, his power base was pretty disappointing. The guy acquired thousands of mutant powers, but uses less than a half dozen? Laughable.

New Four Horseman: Storm and Apocalypse show up to Caliban and ask him to find the most powerful mutants. Psylocke steps in and says she knows them, etc. Off to Angel we go. Angel? Huh? He’s one of the most powerful? Again, missed opportunity to create “Archangel.” Angel was probably the most disappointing character in the movie. I felt they needed to transform Angel, like in the comics, to Archangel, which I felt they didn’t come close to. I also felt Magneto becoming a Four Horseman was a waste: We knew he was going to become a good guy. Again. I felt Kinberg and Singer played it too safe with these characters (probably because they’re all basically “good” guys). They didn’t even compare to the original Four Horsemen listed above. Meh.

Lamest character in the movie?

Jubilee: The mall scene was cut from the movie for whatever reason, but hey, instead we probably got a bunch more of the Michael Bay-esque explosions, right? The mall scene featured the Dazzler Easter Egg and Jubilee using her powers. Bryan Singer said in an interview he wanted more of Jubilee — well, dude, you’re the director, give her some more screen time, then! Hello! The good news is that the scene will be in the Blu-Ray.

Psylocke: She goes on both lists because the bad is that she didn’t get enough screen time!

Danger Room scene: Another big time missed opportunity!! Mystique is the new team leader (or whatever) and we see the Danger Room unfold. Then we see — Sentinels?! The crappy Sentinels from Days of Future Past! Ughhh!! LOL! How epic would it have been if they showed the Sentinels from the comics! Instead, Singer uses his crappy version that is cousins with the Dyson vacuum cleaner. More piss-poor special effects from these guys! Inexcusable!

We hate this:

Love this:

Post-Credit scene: Haven’t these guys learned anything from Marvel Studios? You go out with a BANG! not a whimper. The post-credit scene revealed the involvement of Essex Corp, which we are to presume is Mr. Sinister; however, I felt like the reason they revealed so little is because they aren’t sure what’s next. I thought it was rather lackluster and lame.

On the Fence:

Havok’s death: Is he really dead? With Mr. Sinister teased, it’s possible Havok may have somehow survived.

Mystique: Hey, it’s Jennifer Lawrence, so she has to be the leader of the movie, right?

Anything I missed? Let me know in the comments below.

X-Force Movie In The Works; Singer Pitched X-23 Female Wolverine

Following Hugh Jackman, who will be the new Wolverine?

Well, my pick of Tom Hardy may have taken a hit as it’s learned Bryan Singer pitched the female version of Wolverine, X-23, to Fox.

Fandango caught up with Bryan Singer who also let it be known he pitched a version of X-Force, that Simon Kinberg is working on an X-Force script, and that following X-Men: Apocalypse, he won’t have much to do with the X-Men universe as he will be working on 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Singer did previousy state that if he is going to continue on with the X-Men universe, he wants the next movie to be set in space.

Here is what Singer had to say about X-Force and X-23:

“I have discussed that with the studio,” Singer reveals. “I actually initially pitched the X-Force and the female.”

“Simon [Kinberg] is in the earliest script stage, so that’s kind of where that stands, and we’ll see how it evolves,” he says.

Regarding an eventual X-Men movie that, similar to Marvel, features all the X-Men universe characters (X-Men, Deadpool, X-Force, etc), Singer said:

“But it has to be done right,” he cautions. “Anytime you throw all these characters together to hit a start date, it can make a lot of money, but it can also be a clusterf**k. To me, it has to be done with a lot of care. These things can get overwhelming, and if a character doesn’t belong in a movie, don’t use him. If the tone can still maintain itself, I’m all for it. What I’m not for is throwing a bunch of characters together and hoping it works.”

In the comics, X-23 was cloned from Wolverine DNA and brought up in the Weapon X program to kill Wolverine; however, she ended up joining the X-Men where Wolverine became a father-figure to her.
