Michael Wilkinson Talks New Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman & Aquaman Costumes

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21772:]]

Oscar-nominated costume designer Michael Wilkinson, noted for American Hustle, Tron and Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, Sucker Punch, 300 and Man of Steel, returns for Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League.

People’s Choice caught up with Wilkinson who is in Las Vegas for the MAGIC Panel at the Las Vegas Convention Center where the following was offered about the new Batman Vs. Superman costumes:

Updated Superman Costume:

We tweaked the Superman suit only slightly from our suit from Man of Steel. We streamlined plus sharpened the details of the costume a little to suit the more earthly (less alien) context of this film.

Zack had a great idea to have some kryptonian script [writing] subliminally included in the details of the suit, so we made that happen (update: you can check out details images of the scripts in Superman’s costume here)

Ben Affleck’s Batman Costume:

The batsuit is a complete 180 degree turn from the previous film incarnations — our Batman’s power comes from his incredible physical strength and fighting skills, not from armor. The director Zack Snyder wanted him to look as much like the comic book version as possible — to be respectful to the original source.

My favorite details of the batsuit are the brass knuckles on the gloves.

Gal Gadot Wonder Woman Costume:

As for the Wonder Woman suit, well she has never been seen in a film before, so there was nothing to compare it to! There is of course the costume from the TV show. Zack wanted our character to be a fierce and intimidating warrior — gritty, battle-scarred and immortal.

There is ancient Greek script [writing] on Wonder Woman’s weapons too.

Jason Momoa Aquaman Costume: (note: Wilkinson looks to have confirmed Momoa will be seen in the Aquaman costume in Batman Vs. Superman):

It was pretty hard to get Jason to get out of his Aquaman costume. It really became part of him.

Here are pics of the new costumes (click to enlarge):

Chris Pine Cast As Steve Trevor In Wonder Woman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21518:]]

While Chris Pine won’t be donning a Green Lantern ring (at least we don’t think so), the Star Trek actor will be a part of the DC Cinematic Universe.

The Wrap reports Chris Pine has signed on to star opposite Gal Gadot in the Wonder Woman movie as Steve Trevor in what is said to be a multi-picture deal that includes sequels.

In the comics, Steve Trevor is the love interest to Wonder Woman and a member of the military.

The report doesn’t mention plot specifics, but does offer Pine will be involved in a lot of action.

Pine was previously rumored to be playing Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern Corps movie.

The Wonder Woman movie has a 2017 release with Patty Jenkins on board as director; Zack and Deborah Snyder are producing with Charles Roven and Richard Suckle; Jason Fuchs is writing the script.

Gal Gadot will first appear in Batman Vs. Superman next March.

Pine is also starring in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, which hits July 2016.

Gal Gadot Excited To Inspire People As New Wonder Woman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21436:]]

While Grant Morrison might not think much of the DCCU Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot is pretty darn excited.

Interview Magazine spoke with Gadot (in addition to putting up a really nice spread of pics) where Gadot offered the following:

Oh, my God, I’m so excited about this role. I feel like I’ve been given a huge opportunity to inspire people, not only women. And not because of me but because of who Wonder Woman is and what she stands for. There’s a lot of responsibility. But I have the best team and the best people to work with. It’s going to be an amazing ride, knock on wood.

In addition to Batman Vs. Superman, Gal Gadot will be featured in Justice League and the solo Wonder Woman film.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter and Tao Okamoto in new character roles for the film. Grant Morrison Not A Fan Of Batman Vs. Superman’s Wonder Woman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21408:]]

Grant Morrison, the prolific DC Comics writer behind the likes of All-Star Superman and Batman, is writing the Wonder Woman: Earth One original graphic novel in which he tells the Nerdist he doesn’t like the latest Batman Vs. Superman trailer that features Wonder Woman.

Morrison remarks, the creator of Wonder Woman William Marston’s “original concept for Wonder Woman was an answer to comics that he thought were filled with images of blood-curdling masculinity, and you see the latest shots of Gal Gadot in the costume, and it’s all sword and shield and her snarling at the camera. Marston’s Diana was a doctor, a healer, a scientist.”

Morrison also insinuates that an advanced society shouldn’t be violent as he questions: “What would a society of immortal women that’s been around for 7,000 years have done?”

His answer: “They wouldn’t still be chopping men’s head’s off; they’ve got art and architecture and philosophy and poetry and it’s got nothing to do with men.”

I have to say, I don’t agree with what Morrison is insinuating as, for one, we actually haven’t seen the Batman Vs. Superman movie, so we don’t know why Wonder Woman is actually fighting. My question to Morrison would be: What would an advance society do that’s being attacked and/or forced to defend themselves? Sit around and paint? I would argue an advanced society would actually have evolved warfare to the point where it’s most efficient and lethal. So if the Amazons were hand-to-hand combatants, they would obviously be the best at it.

I also have to take issue with Morrison insinuating that men are violent and the cause of violence. That’s just not true. Women can be just as violent as men.

Here’s the blurb from the interview:

It’s finished now and it’ll be coming out soon. I sat down and I thought, “I don’t want to do this warrior woman thing.” I can understand why they’re doing it, I get all that, but that’s not what [Wonder Woman creator] William Marston wanted, that’s not what he wanted at all! His original concept for Wonder Woman was an answer to comics that he thought were filled with images of blood-curdling masculinity, and you see the latest shots of Gal Gadot in the costume, and it’s all sword and shield and her snarling at the camera. Marston’s Diana was a doctor, a healer, a scientist. So I went back to those roots and just built it up again.

They wouldn’t still be chopping men’s head’s off; they’ve got art and architecture and philosophy and poetry and it’s got nothing to do with men. So Yanick Paquette did this amazing design job, where there are no phallic objects. The only phallic objects are like these Greek towers that are almost like this haunting echo of the culture they came from.

Wonder Woman’s Invisible Plane is now shaped like a vagina, it’s the most incredible thing. It opens up in the back and it has a little clitoris hood, everything is a female-based design. It’s all based on shells and natural stuff. He’s created this entire newly designed world for the Amazons. And for the first 48 pages, there are no men — it’s just women talking to each other. And then halfway through the book, we’re building up to this big fight, and then I thought, “No, I’m not.” This book isn’t about fights, there’s not going to be any fights. So we threw out the rules of traditional boy’s adventure fiction. It’s the most exciting book I’ve done in years, it changed everything I’m thinking about the future.

Gal Gadot & Jason Momoa Will Be At Comic-Con

We can probably take this as a confirmation that new Aquaman Jason Momoa will be at Comic-Con for Batman Vs. Superman as the actor has posted an image of himself with Gal Gadot who will be playing Wonder Woman.

In WB’s official announcement for Comic-Con, Gal Gadot is confirmed to be attending the Batman Vs. Superman panel, but no mention was made of Jason Momoa.

It’s possible the below image was taken at San Diego, which would of course mean Jason Momoa will be seen on stage alongside Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons and Holly Hunter.

The Batman Vs. Superman panel takes place Saturday in Hall H.

Jason Momoa is first set to appear as Aquaman in Batman Vs. Superman and then Justice League and standalone Aquaman movie.

Watch: Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles Episode 3 With Wonder Woman

Watch episode three, “big,” above to the Machinima Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles digital series which features Wonder Woman saving Steve Trevor from a massive threat.

Info:

From visionary producer and animator Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series), Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles turns the DC Universe upside-down. In this dark, alternate world, telling the good guys from the bad guys is never easy: Superman is not the son of Jor-El, he’s the son of General Zod; Wonder Woman is not from peaceful Themyscira, but rather the warring nation of Ares; and Batman is more vampire-bat than man…and he’s not Bruce Wayne. It is unclear if our greatest heroes are here to protect us…or to rule us. With Season 1 set to launch in June, Machinima, Blue Ribbon Content and DC Entertainment have already begun development on Season 2, a 10-episode follow-up to the initial limited series.

The Justice League: Gods and Monsters animated movie will also be available July 28th.

No Marvel Studios Stated Again For Comic-Con; Batman Vs Superman May Be Big

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20905:]]

Confirming what James Gunn said back in March, now Deadline is stating that Marvel Studios will not have a presentation in Hall H at Comic-Con.

The report mentions that “Kevin Feige just doesn’t have anything new to show,” which is a rather odd statement as Marvel has Ant-Man opening the following week in addition to Marvel filming Captain America: Civil War and plans for Doctor Strange to be released in 2016, with filming to begin later this year.

There is also the fact that Marvel could have revealed their new Spider-Man at Comic-Con.

More than likely, Disney is holding back Marvel Studios from Comic-Con for either their own event, similar to the Avengers: Infinity War announcement with Black Panther at El Capitan theater from last year, or the Disney D23 Expo a month after Comic-Con in August.

It is noted that Marvel Studios’ absence will leave Warner Bros. with, potentially, a significant presence of its own as Batman Vs. Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League Part 1 are lined up. It’s possible Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and others may be at Comic-Con representing the DC movies.

For Marvel fans, while Marvel Studios will not be at the SDCC, Marvel Comics will be there with a booth and panels of their own.

Comic-Con takes place July 9-12 in San Diego.

Wonder Woman To Be Featured In Batman Vs. Superman Merchandise

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20900:]]

A big complaint amongst the Marvel fans is that Disney skipped out on Black Widow merchandise for The Avengers 2.

Disney and Hasbro even went so far as changing a scene from the movie to remove Black Widow in the toy.

Mark Ruffalo and George Takei even had complaints.

The good news is that same can’t be said for Wonder Woman and Batman Vs. Superman.

This week sees the Licensing Expo out of Las Vegas in which various studios and merchandisers exhibit their plans for the related movies.

WB already announced their slate of products, which also included a Jakks Pacific Batman Vs. Superman announcement today.

Now in a report over at LicenseMag.com, it’s noted Wonder Woman will be featured promintently in Batman Vs. Superman merchandising.

“Our comprehensive program will include Wonder Woman in the merchandise lines and in standalone products supporting the film. We have always had a robust line for Wonder Woman, and her role in this film and future films offers us more opportunities to feature her character and empowering attributes in many creative ways.”

“This is the first time ever that fans will see Batman and Superman together in a theatrical event. And let’s not forget the two new Batsuits, a new Batmobile, the Batwing, a new logo and Wonder Woman that all create really merchandisable elements for our partner. We have had phenomenal success with each character in their own world, but now we are able to supercharge the opportunity based on the most universally recognized Super Heroes.”

WB Exec Talks DC Vs. Marvel Movies, Batman Vs. Superman & Wonder Woman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20853:]]

Warner Bros. film chief Greg Silverman offers updates on the DC slate of movies in an recent interview with THR.com.

Regarding how WB will differentiate the DC movies from Disney’s Marvel movies, Silverman offers:

We have a great strategy for the DC films, which is to take these beloved characters and put them in the hands of master filmmakers and make sure they all coordinate with each other. You’ll see the difference when you see Batman v. SupermanSuicide SquadJustice League and all the things that we are working on.

There is intensity and a seriousness of purpose to some of these characters. The filmmakers who are tackling these properties are making great movies about superheroes; they aren’t making superhero movies. And when you are trying to make a good movie, you tackle interesting philosophies and character development. There’s also humor, which is an important part.

Silverman also comments on Michelle MacLaren leaving Wonder Woman, with Patty Jenkins coming on to direct:

We had a very intensive process looking at everybody. Patty and Michelle were really the ones who came to the forefront the first go-round, so when things didn’t work out with Michelle, we all knew we had someone great who had expressed interest before. She came back and is doing a great job. But it was never about the best female director. She has demonstrated doing amazing work with female characters, such as in Monster.

Wonder Woman also had multiple writers on the project with each writing different scripts. Silverman explains the reasoning:

Every project is different. On some projects, we have multiple writers working together. In some cases, we put writers together who have never been a team together. And sometimes, there is only one writer whose voice is right. In the case of Wonder Woman, the right approach was to have writers pitching different scenes within the framework we created.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” hits March 25, 2016 followed by “Suicide Squad” on August 5, 2016, with “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League Part 1” in 2017.
