Dwayne Johnson Confirmed As Doc Savage

Dwayne Johnson will play Doc Savage for director Shane Black.

The Rock confirmed the casting on Instagram:

It’s OFFICIAL: For all comic book fans you already know the world’s first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the “Man of Bronze” himself Clark “Doc” Savage.

Want to thank my bud director/writer Shane Black and his writing team Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry for flying in from LA and sitting with me and our @sevenbucksprod’s producer @hhgarcia41 on this Memorial Day weekend to chop up creative and break story on this very cool project.

Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about “Doc” Savage is that he’s the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called “Man of Bronze”, retreats to his “Fortress of Solitude” in the Arctic etc etc.

Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women’s perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything. But here’s the #1 reason I’m excited to become Doc Savage.. HE’S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!

Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious.

After speaking for hours w/ Shane Black I can see why the creator of Superman took only the best parts of Doc Savage and leaving the “weirdo” part behind. But to us, it’s that “weirdo” part that makes Clark “Doc” Savage dope! Can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one of a kind character. #ItsOfficial #WorldsFirstSuperhero #GeniusIntellect #PhysicalSpecimen #FnLoveableWeirdo #ManOfBronze #DocSavage

No release date has yet been set for the Doc Savage movie.

Shane Black previously offered about Doc Savage as well as Dwayne Johnson:

Now, you’re talking. Doc Savage was — and is — as much a part of my creative life as any other influence (with the possible exception of The Cricket in Times Square, oddly). With 182 stories in the original canon to choose from (I confess to having only read 107) it becomes nigh impossible to pick any one book, so we have to synthesize the elements — the protypical TYPE of tale — that best sums up the entire bloody mess; not just an episode wiuthin the genre. It’s really daunting, frankly. As for Duane — Google “James Bama – Doc Savage” and look at the images which assailed me from the book rack at Shop-Rite whn I was young. The Rock seems very insertable, doesn’t he?

Shane Black Talks Predator, Marvel, Doc Savage & Dwayne Johnson

Iron Man 3 helmer Shane Black is directing a new Predator movie, the Doc Savage movie and has The Nice Guys debuting today.

Black participated in a Reddit AMA where he offered the following about the films, Marvel and Robert Downey Jr.

On the new Predator (due out March 2, 2018):

This new reimagining of |The Predator will be set in |Present Day — which is to say, 2018; and so the futuristic events of Predators have not yet occurred. |We’re on earth, the time is now…

On a potential Alien Vs. Predator movie:

Ridley (the best man for the job) has taken the helm of the Alien franchise, and I’m frankly more interested in watching his work as an awed observer; watching Ridley to me is like going to school.

On Marvel:

I love the Marvel folk. They’re making the best superhero movies around, largely because they’re not elaboately calculated products; they’re labors of love for these guys. They grew up on the shit.

Marvel was an education and a half. I remember I was a bit headspun, early on, trying to find out how exactly I fit in, when Joss Whedon approached me. Sensing my distress, he said, “You don’t have to keep ahold of every moving part. Trust the machine.” And so I took the cotton out of my ears, put it in my mouth, and proceeded to LEARN from the most efficient, well-oiled superhero delivery system in history. Everyone should be so lucky.

On Doc Savage and Dwayne Johnson:

Now, you’re talking. Doc Savage was — and is — as much a part of my creative life as any other influence (with the possible exception of The Cricket in Times Square, oddly). With 182 stories in the original canon to choose from (I confess to having only read 107) it becomes nigh impossible to pick any one book, so we have to synthesize the elements — the protypical TYPE of tale — that best sums up the entire bloody mess; not just an episode wiuthin the genre. The Rock seems very insertable, doesn’t he?

On casting Robert Downey Jr. in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang:

Downey was the man. Period. Down-at-his-heels, previously uninsurable, the whole deal — fuck it. I trusted him. I was so right. That said, the movie tanked; but I’m still intensely proud of it, and so SO grateful for what Downey and Kilmer brought. Lightning in a bottle.

Marvel Studios Clueless When It Came To Iron Man 3 The Mandarin Reception

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black let loose in a new interview about the movie.

Not only did Shane Black discuss how Iron Man 3 originally had a female villain and why the character was axed, but Black also discussed the negative reception to the film and especially Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin — revealing Marvel Studios had no clue their version of the character would be received by the fans so poorly.

Via Uproxx:

I wish that the fans liked it more.

I’m a people pleaser. Marvel saw so many negative things they made a whole other movie just to apologize called Hail to the King. In which they said, “No, no, the Mandarin is still alive. That wasn’t him. There’s a real Mandarin.” The only reason they made that was an apology to fans who were so angry.

Of course, they didn’t care. But when the blowback hit, they cared.

No, we didn’t. We didn’t know. We all thought they’d eat it up because it never occurred to us the Mandarin is as iconic to people as, say, the Joker in Batman.

They just wanted to see the magic rings shoot lasers.

You’d need to take the piss out of it and explain how this can happen. In the comic books, it’s literally magic. It’s magic from outer space. I love the fans. I really want to please them.

Interestingly enough, Marvel is receiving similar criticism for the Ancient One in Doctor Strange as they changed the character’s origin and sex to Celtic and female. Note: The reason the Ancient One and Mandarin were changed in the movies is thought to be due to appeasing the Chinese, which has become a big cash cow for international box off receipts.

Up next for Shane Black is the new 2018 Predator movie.

Ike Perlmutter Axed Iron Man 3 Female Villain

Marvel Studios has been taking flak as of late for the lack of female centric movies as well as related merchandise.

Well, that looks to be changing as it’s known Marvel CEO Ike Permutter was the one putting the kibosh on female-related projects at Marvel Studios.

The good news is that Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige recently parted ways with Perlmutter and his Marvel TV/comics creative committee.

Leaked Sony e-mails revealed Perlmutter put a stop to female Marvel movies citing Elektra, Catwoman and Supergirl as being disasters.

There was also little to no merchandise for Black Widow from Avengers 2 (or Scarlet Witch).

Now it’s become known an early draft for Iron Man 3 actually featured a female villain, buy that, too, was put a stop to by Perlmutter.

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black talked with Uproxx about working on the movie where he let it be known Killian was originally female, but apparently Perlmutter (who is in charge of Marvel merchandise, TV and comics) axed the idea:

All I’ll say is this, on the record: There was an early draft of Iron Man 3 where we had an inkling of a problem. Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the draft. We had finished the script and we were given a no-holds-barred memo saying that cannot stand and we’ve changed our minds because, after consulting, we’ve decided that toy won’t sell as well if it’s a female.

So, we had to change the entire script because of toy making. Now, that’s not Feige. That’s Marvel corporate, but now you don’t have that problem anymore.

Yeah, Ike’s gone. But New York called and said, “That’s money out of our bank.” In the earlier draft, the woman was essentially Killian – and they didn’t want a female Killian, they wanted a male Killian. I liked the idea, like Remington Steele, you think it’s the man but at the end, the woman has been running the whole show. They just said, “no way.”

I remember Remington Steele probably better than it is. But just so you know, too, I’m a Kevin Feige fan. If you ever say anything about decisions made at Marvel, I hope you’ll qualify it by saying that Kevin Feige is the guy who gets it right. And I don’t know if it was Ike, I don’t know who it was. They never told me who made the decision, we just got that memo one day and it was about toy sales. That’s all I know.

Black also confirms two other female roles were cut short in Iron Man 3:

We had troubles. Memories are short. You can go through hell together, then six months later go, “That was kind of fun, wasn’t it, John?” The good news is, Downey and I seem to get on pretty well. We’ll bicker now and again, but to me just having him on board elevates the material. So, the toughness was in the logistics instead of the relationships. That’s the good news. We replaced a lot of things. The plot went this way and that way. Stéphanie Szostak’s character was bigger at one point and we reduced it. Rebecca Hall’s character was bigger at one point and we reduced it.

Marvel Studios has the female driven Captain Marvel movie set for a 2018 release.

Shane Black Predator Movie To Be As Big As Iron Man 3; Arnold Might Be Back

If you happen to be a fan of the Predator, you will probably be happy by what director Shane Black has to same about the new Predator movie coming out in 2018.

Shane Black explains why he decided to take on the new Predator film and cites the reason being that Fox stated they want the movie to be as big as Iron Man 3, which means more epic and a larger budget than any of the other previous Predator movies.

To put it in perspective, the 2010 Predators movie had a budget of around $40 millon, while Iron Man‘s 3 budget was around $200 million.

Fox also says they want to make Predators as eventful and important as a Ridley Scott Alien prequel.

Sounds pretty awesome.

Here’s what Shane Black had to say via Thrillist:

They called me and I was reluctant. I said, “Look. You guys at Fox, I mean, I enjoy these movies, but we’ve been churning out these AVP whatever, they each cost a certain amount of money, they’re okay, but there’s no effort to elevate them or make them any kind of an event.” They’re just sort of another Predator. “Oh, there’s another one that came out.” They said, “What if we said to you we want to reinvent this, and really treat it with as much of an event status, or as much hoopla as we would the Alien prequel, which is coming out also? We really want to make this something. The kind of movie that people line up for.” I said, “Really, you’ll spend a bunch of money?” They go, “Yep.” I go, “Make it really scale, spectacle?” “Yep.” “Shit, that sounds interesting.”

I think the first one was great, and it was contained, and it was a perfect little gem for what it was. I think there’s an expansion that needs to take place, and also just a love for that era, that movie, and the mythology of the Predator. I think that they came to me knowing pretty much that… they said, basically, if I wanted to make Predator but treat it like it was Iron Man III instead of just another little movie. I said, “Let’s really do it right this time.”

And regarding whether or not Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back:

Still in talks, script still a secret.

The last film came out in 2010 with Predators.

It’s unknown whether Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back.
