Watch: Creed Trailer #2

A second trailer has been releaseda for the new Rocky movie, Creed, starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan.

Creed has a November 25, 2015 release.

Synopsis:

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures comes award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s “Creed.”  The film explores a new chapter in the “Rocky” story and stars Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role.  The film also reunites Coogler with his “Fruitvale Station” star Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed.

Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born.  Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer.  Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend.  Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title…but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?

Watch: Awkward Interview With Fantastic Four Cast

One thing that has always bugged me about certain interviews, is that the interviewer makes the interview more about themselves than their guests.

I’ve seen and heard it happen dozens of times on various podcasts, radio shows (of course), morning shows (of course), websites and video.

So I’m not really surprised by what happened in the above interview where the cast of the Fantastic Four participated in a really awkward (I can think of a different a-word, though) interview with Atlanta’s Rock 100.5 Morning Show.

The guys asking the questions actually bring up the fact that Michael B. Jordan and Kate Mara are brother and sister in the movie – and get this – and ask, “How does that happen?” They even go so far and point out they are black and white (no, really?) and question, “How does that happen?” Wow. It’s pretty obvious, isn’t it?

Credit goes to the cast for not flying off the handle, as Michael B. Jordan replies “we’re brother and sister” and “we were raised as brother and sister.”

The trainwreck interview continues as Kata Mara is actually questioned why she cut her hair:  “You’re way way hot. Why’d you cut your hair?”

“I’m sorry. I know you don’t like it. I can tell,” Mara responded.

“Your hair was beautiful.”

“This is a great interview,” Mara said. “They asked me to [cut my hair for another movie]. I’m an actress. I have to be a chameleon.”

One of the radio personalities then went on to talk about Mara’s toes (yeah, yikes, lol).

One worthy tidbit that came out of the interview is that the cast of the Fantastic Four hasn’t seen the complete movie, yet, as the interview took place before the movie’s Red Carpet premiere in NYC on August 4th.

The radio station sent Buzz Feed the following when questioned about the interview:

“Absolutely not! That’s not mine or the show’s thing. Look, not a huge fan of these controlled 5-7 minute interview junkets they run in the first place but I was curious about the brother and sister thing. You have a white sister and black brother wouldn’t you want to know how that happened? I did. The other Fantastic Four franchises explain the relationship so I figured with this new hipster version they’d have some different backstory.

My partner’s (Southside Steve) conversation about Kate’s hair is something that came up while Michael B Jordan took a phone call so I think they were kind of just going back forth in a playful way. As for him complimenting her toes and why people are upset about that…sorry…no idea. Steve likes girl’s toes. People should be appreciative when they get complimented. Those that are upset on Twitter I guess don’t get enough of them. Who knows?”

Fantastic Four Casts Wants Silver Surfer & Namor For Sequel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21581:]]

Will we ever see the Sentinel of the Spaceways on the big screen again?

I would have to say it’s a good bet, especially if the Fantastic Four reboot is somewhat of a success.

While the 2007 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer movie was less than stellar, which I thought was more due to the writing, I was pretty happy with Doug Jones’ performance as the herald of Galactus. The movie actually wouldn’t have turned out that bad if they hadn’t used the Galactus cloud.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21582:]]

Last we heard about the Silver Surfer potentially appearing in a movie was the rumor that Marvel Studios wanted to trade the rights to Daredevil for Silver Surfer and Galactus. It’s possible Marvel wanted to use the cosmic duo in their Infinity War movies against Thanos. Obviously that didn’t happen, and Marvel so far has come out on top as the Netflix Daredevil show is considered a raging success.

So with Fox Studios keeping the rights to Silver Surfer and Galactus, now the Surfer’s name has popped up in relation to a potential Fantastic Four sequel. Jamie Bell, who is playing Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, says he would like to see the Silver Surfer as the next villain.

“You can’t get away from Silver Surfer,” Bell told ComicBook.com. “I know chronologically speaking that was the next villain in the previous franchise but I think Silver Surfer is cool looking.”

While the Fantastic Four movie has been getting some heat online, what I do appreciate about the film is that it’s a more serious take on science-fiction than the previous campy movies — and even Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. A really hard core serious approach with the Surfer would be out of this world.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21583:]]

Now a second potential villain named for the Fantastic Four sequel will be a little more difficult to use than the Silver Surfer. In the same interview, Michael B. Jordan, who plays Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch, recommends Namor.

“Namor is a cool one,” Jordan said. “By far, he’s the strongest mutant. You know what I’m saying? Maybe not by far, but he’s the strongest mutant. It would be a pretty interesting battle, the Fantastic Four vs. Namor.”

The issue with Namor is that Fox Studios doesn’t own the rights to the character. Actually, both Universal Studios and Marvel Studios have their hands tied to the character, so unless both studios would agree to lend Fox Namor (which wouldn’t be unheard of as Sony and Marvel have come to a mutual deal for Spider-Man), The Sub-Mariner would be out of the question.

As Jordan notes, Namor has a history with the Fantastic Four, which would be pretty cool on the big screen if we did see the FF taking on Atlantis.

“The classic one where he’s running rampant and the only way he’ll stop is if he gets a kiss from Sue right in front of Reed. It’s awesome. I think that would make for a good movie and storyline.”

Stan Lee Supports Michael B. Jordan: Defends Fans’ Complaints

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21483:]]

While Stan Lee doesn’t want Spider-Man to change any time soon, the 92-year-old Marvel creator says he is okay with Michael B. Jordan playing Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movie, and Stan Lee even defends fans who have complained about it.

“It was more than okay,” Lee told EW.com about Jordan cast as Johnny Storm. “I thought it was a great idea!”

Michael B. Jordan weighed in as well noting Stan Lee sent Fantastic Four director Josh Trank an e-mail about it.

“[If] Stan Lee writes an email to my director saying, ‘You’re good. I’m okay with this,’ who am I to go against that?” Jordan questioned.

While true, there have been many complaints online about the casting (actually, not just about the casting, but a lot of other things such as the Thing not having any pants), Stan Lee offers it’s not about being racist, but about the fact that the Human Torch has changed.

“They’re outraged not because of any personal prejudice,” Lee offered. “They’re outraged because they hate to see any change made on a series and characters they had gotten familiar with. In Spider-Man, when they got a new actor, that bothered them, even though it was a white actor. I don’t think it had to do with racial prejudice as much as they don’t like things changed. But I think they’re gonna get to love this character. So I’m not the least bit worried about it. I always tried to pepper these groups with as much racial diversity as possible because that’s the way the world is.”

“Fantastic Four” has an August 7, 2015 release directed by Josh Trank from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, Simon Kinberg and Josh Trank; produced by Matthew Vaughn, Simon Kinberg, Hutch Parker, Robert Kulzar and Gregory Goodman; starring: Miles Teller, Michael B. Fantastic Four’s Michael B. Jordan Addresses The Trolls Online

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20714:]]

Like it or not, Michael B. Jordan is the new Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, in the Fantastic Four reboot and planned sequel. When Jordan’s casting was announced some people on the internet exploded with outrage as, in the comics, the character is white and blond-haired. Too add to that, Jordan’s Storm is the half-brother to Kate Mara’s Sue Storm, who has been adopted.

Michael B. Jordan took the time out to guest-pen an article at EW.com where he addressed the internet hate and diversity of the movie.

Here’s an excerpt:

You’re not supposed to go on the Internet when you’re cast as a superhero. But after taking on Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four—a character originally written with blond hair and blue eyes—I wanted to check the pulse out there. I didn’t want to be ignorant about what people were saying. Turns out this is what they were saying: “A black guy? I don’t like it. They must be doing it because Obama’s president” and “It’s not true to the comic.” Or even, “They’ve destroyed it!”

And:

To the trolls on the Internet, I want to say: Get your head out of the computer. Go outside and walk around. Look at the people walking next to you. Look at your friends’ friends and who they’re interacting with. And just understand this is the world we live in. It’s okay to like it.

Fantastic Four Cast Talks Saying Classic Lines, Costumes & Being Super Heroes (Video)

Fantastic Four has come along way since earlier reports of the movie mentioned the characters wouldn’t be super heroes or wearing costumes. At one time it was even said their powers were more comparable to disabilities than anything that gives them the ability to save the day.

All that seems to be changed with the latest trailer as we do see the Fantastic Four in costume as well as wielding their powers seemingly for the good of all mankind.

Now the cast offers the movie will also feature the FF’s well-known dialogue from the comics, as well as the FF will be superheroes, and the cast teases the look of the costumes.

Kate Mara confirms by the end of the movie, fans will get to see the Fantastic Four in their iconic familiar suits.

“Yes,” Mara responds with a deep voice.

Miles Teller gives a questioning look toward Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan offering possibly that the suits we see is what we will get: “I would say, go by what you see. I think, at this point, our suits are out there. You see our suits.”

Mara then adds the Fantastic Four are super heroes.

“We are super heroes for a lot of the film, but you are also with us for a decent about of time before that happens,” Mara said.

It’s also learned the voice for The Thing will be Jamie Bell’s voice using a modulator.

“It will be a lot of my voice modulated slightly,” Bell said.

Regarding The Thing saying his classic line from the comics – “it’s clobbering time” – Bell answers, “Possibly.”

Michael B. Jordan and Kate Mara also respond the same when questioned if the Human Torch will say “flame on.”

First Look At Michael B. Jordan In Fantastic Four

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18896:]]

Check out some first look images at Fantastic Four below as Fox has officially released set images featuring Michael B. Jordan, Simon Kinberg (screenwriter/producer) and director Josh Trank.

The Collider spoke with Trank and Kinberg who offered some details:

Fantastic Four looks to be about 2 hours to 2 hours and twenty minutes in length.

Regarding why the movie hasn’t been promoted just yet, Tranks defends the reasoning as he would rather have everyone see the finished product: “I’d rather show people what it looks like when it’s done.”

Trank compares FF to a David Cronberg movie and offers it’s more of a hard science-fiction reboot than a straight superhero movie.

Regarding a black Johnny Storm and a white Sue Storm, Trank offers: “I have mixed family in my own family and it’s something that isn’t out of the ordinary anymore but we don’t really see it portrayed in the casual reality of the movies.  That’s something I felt that would be interesting and challenging, to have mixed siblings.”

Kinberg says the Ultimate comics were the biggest influence from Marvel:  “Yeah, I think The Ultimates is probably our biggest influence because it’s the younger Fantastic Four.  And a lot of the science specifics are there.  And a lot of the means of transformation we took from those books. As you’ll see a little bit in the trailer and a lot in the movie, there are influences really from the beginning of what Kirby and Stan were doing in the 60’s all the way up into the present day. This is an origin story in many regards and it is inspired by The Ultimate Fantastic Four as much as anything else.”

Tranks says the Negative Zone “could be there in the movie.”

Kinberg says there are lot of Easter Eggs in the movie and one in the trailer.

Simon Kinberg confirms there are talks about a potential Fantastic Four and X-Men shared movie universe, as leaked e-mails as a result of the Sony hack stated a planned Fantastic Four and X-Men movie is underway:  “The extra challenge is that the X-Men films so far don’t acknowledge the Fantastic Four and the Fantastic Four takes place essentially in the same time period as the X-Men movies, the modern day.  So they have challenges.  But there are certainly conversations.”

“Fantastic Four” has an August 7, 2015 release directed by Josh Trank starring Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm,  Kate Mara as Sue Storm and Toby Kebbell as Victor von Doom.

Op-Ed: Thoughts On A Michael B. Jordan As A Black Johnny Storm

Josh Trank’s Got A ‘Fantastic’ Curveball For Ya!

More Casting Shenanigans from the Hollywood Machine

By Lawrence Napoli

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14084:]]

All right, so we all know by now that 20th Century Fox is bankrolling a reboot of the Fantastic Flops from ’05 and ’07.  Josh Trank, director of Chronicle (2012), will be in command of this reboot starring a bunch of semi-known white actors in the principal roles … and … a black Johnny Storm?  Oh yes, Michael B. Jordan (which is I’m sure a stage name that totally and is in no way attempting to siphon off any mojo from ‘His Airness’) has been cast as the Human Torch.  Questions?

First, let’s state the obvious.  Jordan is Josh Trank’s boy from his break out film Chronicle.  Jordan did a great job in that role, but he still happened to be the token black guy in a super-hero-y type of movie so that means [SPOILER ALERT!] he wasn’t the main character and was the first one with powers to be killed.  Surprise, surprise.  What truly isn’t a surprise, however, is the fact that this kind of Hollywood nepotism or reciprocation or familiarity or whatever you want to label it as is pretty gosh darn common.  Just look at anything produced or directed by Chris Nolan and you may notice the carbon copying of entire cast lists.  Be that as it may, I have no problem with any director recasting actors with whom he or she developed good, professional relationships with – provided it’s not just about throwing someone a bone and the decision will be mutually beneficial.

Second, nobody knows where exactly this “reboot” is going to go with the story, but examining the sparse details on imdb.com (assuming them to be accurate) allows us to deduce a few things: The Fantastic Four will be Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ben Grimm/The Thing and Johnny Storm/The Human Torch.  Each character would not have been given their pseudonym on the cast page if this reboot was going to be doing something way off formula by changing the origin story from “these people get blasted with cosmic rays in space that turns them into the super-humans we’ve come to know them as.”  So it seems that everyone is going to have the same or similar range of status and relationships they share with each other from the comics and the previous films.  The issue at bar is that the characters of Sue and Johnny Storm share a biological heritage that is clearly going to be broken based on this most recent casting news.  I can only presume that Trank will go for some alternative/adoptive family structure to “plot-device” that little detail away because both introducing themselves as “I’m Sue Storm.  I’m Johnny Storm.  No relation,” is just plain dumb even for a (non-spoof) comic book adaptation.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14086:]]

I could care less about whatever taboo may result from reorienting the ethnicities of fictional characters.  If anything, Hollywood needs as many truckloads of actual, progressive thought patterns to do anything to kick the white/male hero to the curb and deliver stories whose main characters are women, Asians, Africans, Hispanics, homosexuals – basically anyone who isn’t the stereotypical white, hetero, leading man.  I like the idea of casting Michael B. Jordan in this role because of the potential it gives to refreshing a whole lot of super hero been there/done that.  My problem with this casting reveal is not that Johnny Storm is black, but that his sister, Sue Storm (Kate Mara, pictured left), isn’t.

There was a real opportunity to do something unique with a fairly popular (though certainly not a flagship) license amidst this tidal wave of comic book films we’ll be digesting for the next 10 years.  Seeing interracial couples in films and TV today reflect trends in western society that have been happening for a while, and Hollywood is still catching up.  Seeing this in a super hero family for a big budget blockbuster would not only have brought the proverbial spice, but also a whole new angle to reflect on the first family of super-heroes not to mention an added level of depth this potential film’s predecessors could never have addressed.  If Trank wants Jordan as Johnny, then that’s fine, but it makes no sense to make his (traditionally) biological sister a different race, regardless of whatever complex family dynamic you’ll only address with these two characters by themselves.  Finding the screen time to explain whatever this brother-sister relationship will eventually be defined as will diminish the capacity of the most important relationship in this family: between Reed and Sue (and their future child Franklin who is arguably the most powerful, non-abstract, character in the Marvel Universe).  An interracial couple would have raised the stakes, delivered something new and sweetened the drama for the entire cast.

In the end, Josh Trank is going to be directing a comic book adaptation that is going to feature plenty of action and special effects and typically, those kinds of films aren’t primarily interested in commenting on anything too heavy.  As much as people may be making a big deal about Michael B. Jordan now, I have a feeling that Trank is going to sweep his ethnicity under the rug in the due course of the film’s progression by making these “however related” siblings as matter-as-fact as possible.  One or both of them will be adopted or have different fathers and yada, yada, yada, as long as two white people are hooking up as husband and wife of this super hero team then everything’s fine.  Diving any deeper into this subplot turns this film into the Fantastic Two.  Denying that depth forces the elephant in the room to get completely ignored and, as a director, you’ve made your actor (in this case, Jordan) completely inconsequential to the character.  I suppose it’s a good thing to get to the point in society where things like race and everything else that makes us different from each other doesn’t impact behavior in any way, but maintaining the unique sibling nature of Sue and Johnny with the ethnicity swap would have brought a whole new level of complexity to this film that I can only assume was simply (ahem) too hot to handle for this particular production staff.

I’m sure when more information and promotions regarding this film become available, we’ll hear Trank and perhaps every producer at the top talk about “we just picked the best cast with the best chemistry,” as an explanation for it all.  Yeah, ok.  This isn’t casting for a high school musical where it would be novel to cast an African American male for Peter Pan, an Asian American female for Jean Valjean, a Latino American male for Sky Masterson and so on and so forth.  Picking whomever for whatever shouldn’t enter the equation unless the production is going to make those kinds of choices more meaningful to the overall production than “just ‘cause.”  Hollywood films can ill afford to be flippant in regards to any decision made for the production unless that choice fully serves the story; anything less needs to be reconsidered if not instantly retracted.  Of course, that kind of idealism doesn’t fuel even your average Hollywood blockbuster and the “just ‘cause” rationale is actually something that pops up quite frequently.  It’s one of the main reasons we continue to see some awful filmmaking and the audience notices those choices with every awkward moment we bear witness to.

All I care about is seeing a really good movie, and I feel this one could be great if the Storm family was an African American family, but let’s dial it back and keep it real with the Fantastic Four.  That franchise isn’t anything close to the grandeur of The Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman, Superman or the Justice League.  Infinitely less people are going to care if this movie actually gets made, let alone this one little detail.  So who gives a damn, right?  Well, I would think a filmmaker would want as many people as possible to give a damn by trying to show people a story and give them an experience they haven’t had before.  The brother-sister no relation situation seems foolish to push in any film where the story isn’t fully focused on that major plot point.  But who am I kidding?  It’s just another reboot.  Why should anyone expect more from something less?
