Joseph Gordon-Levitt Exits Sandman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24623:]]

What may have seen Joseph Gordon-Levitt potentially star and direct in, now the actor has left the Sandman movie altogether.

Following the news that New Line Cinema had enlisted a new screenwriter for Sandman (Final Destination 5 and The Conjuring 2 screenwriter Eric Heisserer), Joseph Gordon-Levitt posted an update on his Facebook page offering that he has left the project.

JGL cites the reason for his departure being that Sandman changed hands from Warner Bros. to their subsidiary, New Line Cinema, and that JGL and New Line aren’t seeing eye-to-eye. JGL also seems to indicate Sandman got pretty far at Warner Bros. as he mentions working with David Goyer, DC Entertainment chief creative officer and producer Geoff Johns and Neil Gaiman.

Dwayne Johnson’s Shazam movie is also at New Line Cinema, with The Rock playing Black Adam. Johnson previously indicated it would be independent of what Zack Snyder was doing with the Justice League universe, but it’s speculated to still be somehow connected.

Here is what Joseph Gordon-Levitt posted about Sandman:

RE: SANDMAN

So, as you might know if you like to follow these sorts of things, a while back, David Goyer and I made a producing deal with Warner Brothers to develop a movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s SANDMAN. Neil himself came on as an executive producer, we hired the excellent screenwriter, Jack Thorne, and we started in on the ambitious task of adapting one of the most beloved and boundary-pushing titles in the world of comics. I was pleased with the progress we were making, even though we still had quite a ways to go.

Recently, as you also might know if you like to follow these sorts of things, the sorta “ownership” (for lack of a better term) of the Sandman material changed hands when Warner Brothers shifted the entire catalogue of Vertigo comics (an imprint of DC) to their subsidiary, New Line. And a few months ago, I came to realize that the folks at New Line and I just don’t see eye to eye on what makes Sandman special, and what a film adaptation could/should be. So unfortunately, I decided to remove myself from the project. I wish nothing but the best for the team moving forward.

I’d like to thank all the great people I’ve had the opportunity to work with on this one. I’ve had a blast with and learned a ton from David and Jack. Niija Kuykendall, Greg Silverman, and everyone at Warner Brothers have been fantastic, as have Geoff Johns and everyone at DC. And it’s been a particular privilege as well as a rocking good time getting to know Mr. Gaiman, whose generous insights and masterful work have certainly convinced me that the Lord of Dreams and the Prince of Stories are one and the same Endless pattern.

The Walk has an October 9, 2015 release directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back To The Future) also starring Ben Kingsley, Charlotte Le Bon, James Badge Dale, Ben Schwartz and Steve Valentine.

Synopsis:

The film is a love letter to Paris and New York City in the 1970s, but most of all, to the Towers of the World Trade Center.

Guillermo del Toro No Longer Attached To Justice League Dark

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21190:]]

It’s learned Guillermo del Toro is no longer attached to Justice League Dark.

Yesterday saw Warner Bros. shuffle their DC Vertigo titles around which saw Sandman moved from WB to sister arm, New Line Cinema.

In THR‘s report on the news, they state insiders say Guillermo del Toro is working on Pacific Rim 2 and is prepping for the release of Crimson Peak and is no longer set to direct Justice League Dark.

It is noted Justice League Dark is still at Warner Bros.; the movie is set feature the supernatural characters of the DCU including Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, and Deadman. The reason given (which may be why Guillermo del Toro is no longer attached) is that DC Comics recently moved the JLD characters into their regular DC Universe and the movie is doing the same.

Sandman is based on the Neil Gaiman comic and is being developed by Jospeh Gordon Levitt.

Dwayne Johnson’s Shazam is still at New Line as well.

Deadline reports the reason for the Vertigo titles shifting to New Line under Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener is that the Vertigo titles are considered “subversive” compared to the WB-steered DC Comics titles with those “venerable superheroes.”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt To Star In Fraggle Rock Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19717:]]

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to star in a new live-action Fraggle Rock movie as well as produce for for New Regency, The Henson Co. and Lisa Henson.

Variety reported the news that Fraggle Rock is finally coming to fruition after being in development for a decade.

“The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock,’” Gordon-Levitt said. “Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”

Fraggle Rock debuted in 1983 and aired on HBO for five seasons centering on the adventures of the cave-dwelling creatures called Fraggles featuring characters such as Doc, Sprocket the Dog, Gobo Fraggle, Wembley Fraggle, Boober Fraggle, Mokey Fraggle, Red Fraggle, and Uncle Traveling Matt in addition to the Doozers, the giant Gorgs and the all-knowing Marjory the Trash Heap.
