Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Has Less Characters & Gunn Nixed A New One

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20866:]]

In addition to James Gunn finishing the script for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Chris Pratt stating the story brought him to tears, new details are learned about the sequel.

James Gunn has been using the new Periscope App as of late and answered a bunch of questions about Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Screen Rant jotted down some of the answers with the most notable being Gunn mentioning Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will actually have less characters.

Gunn, who removed Richard Rider Nova from the Nicole Perlman’s first Guardians of the Galaxy script, also lets it be known he removed another character for this movie. He confirms instead of two new characters, there will only be one (assumed to be a Guardian).

“People ask for so many characters to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and they ask for so many actors who they want to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but we actually have less characters in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 than we have in Guardians of the Galaxy 1 because everything is just getting too sprawling and too crazy for me in these superhero comic book movies. And also in superhero comics in general. There’s just too many characters so you can’t concentrate on one and really get to know that character, and I really want to get to know the characters that we know better, and yeah, we will be introducing a new character…”

“I did not get any help with the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 other than I wrote a scriptment which I’ve been working on for nine months, and I wrote that very, very in-depth scriptment which is a 70-page combination of a script and a treatment and it goes through every beat of the movie, everything, and I’ve been going through that and showing that to [Marvel Studios Boss] Kevin [Feige] and getting feedback and seeing what worked and what didn’t, what characters work, what didn’t. I mean, people will be disappointed – at some point I’ll release – but I had another big character in my original draft and it was just getting too busy. I took that character out. And it’s a character I like a lot and hope to work with in the future but I just didn’t have room for that person, that character.”

Some other tidbits Gunn mentioned include:

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is “not forced to fit in puzzle pieces from other creators nor is it required to serve as setup for Avengers: Infinity War.”

The Guardians movies don’t follow the comics too close because a lot of the Marvel Cosmic characters aren’t owned by Marvel Studios.

The five core Guardians are returning along with Yondu, Nebula and Kraglin.

It hasn’t been mentioned whether the Nova Corps will be involved.

Star-Lord’s father has not been cast, yet.

Scott Chambliss is the new production designer (known for Abram Star Trek movies, Mission Impossible).

Guardians is the most standalone series Marvel has.

Gunn said he is going to wait until after Guardians 2 to decide if he will do Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Gunn also again said on Facebook that the Hulk isn’t involved.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” has a May 5, 2017 release.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Story Brought Chris Pratt To Tears (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20849:]]

James Gunn recently let it be known that he completed the first draft of the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 script.

Gunn previously mentioned the movie will be about family as well as Star-Lord’s father, and now Chris Pratt offers his take on the story.

While doing press for his latest film, Jurassic World, Pratt told Digital Spy the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 story brought tears to his eyes.

In the video below, Pratt states he knows “everything” about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 when mention is made of Star-Lord’s father, and Pratt also says he has talked with Gunn about the music for Awesome Mix Vol. 2 and continues with his thoughts on the story.

“His pitch and his ideas legitimately put tears in my eyes,” Pratt said. “It is so good.”

Pratt also offered Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is “so big” and that Marvel felt it was perfect. Check out more in the video below.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is due out May 5, 2017; Pratt stars in Jurassic World, out June 12th.

First Draft Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Script Completed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20842:]]

We are one step closer to Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

James Gunn posted earlier on Facebook that he just completed the first draft script of the sequel.

Gunn teased an image of the title page mentioning it took him almost two months to complete.

Phew. After 48 days straight without a day off, the the first draft of ‪#‎GotG2 ‬is done. I’m sorry to all my friends and family who I have ignored.

No specifics are known about the movie other than Gunn previously stating it will be about family and look to explain the identity of Star-Lord’s father, which will be different than the comic book version. Gunn also said the movie will take deeper look at who the characters are, and we’ll get to know more about Gamora, Nebula and Yondu.

I’m also guessing Gunn will be applying that deeper approach to the villain of the movie. I know Gunn said something to the effect he wished he could have done more with Ronan, so hopefully whoever – or whatever – is the big bad this time out will be fully explored.

There has also been talk of two female characters joining the Guardians – maybe Mantis and Moondragon?

Fans are also hoping for an Adam Warlock appearance, and many online are speculating Starhawk may very well be Star-Lord’s father.

Gunn also previously let it be known that Marvel said his approach to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is risky, which is rather interesting, as it means Gunn isn’t going to simply copy what he did with the first movie.

It will also be interesting to see what direction Guardians of the Galaxy 2 takes: Will it lead to other Marvel Cosmic movies? Or will Marvel bring it down to Earth connecting it to the Avengers: Infinity War movies?

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is due out May 5, 2017.

Phew. After 48 days straight without a day off, the the first draft of #GotG2 is done. I’m sorry to all my friends and family who I have ignored.

DC’s Omega Men Promises To Be Better Cosmic Than Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20824:]]

While Marvel Comics goes the PC and parody route with their cosmic titles, DC Comics writer Tom King is promising that The Omega Men will “tell a cosmic story that’s better than anything Marvel or Image can do.”

The Omega Men #1 launches tomorrow as part of the new “DC You” line-up that follows the Convergence event.

Tom King spoke with USA Today offering some space-age details about The Omega Men, which previously hinted at the death of White Lantern Kyle Rayner in the special 8-page sneak peek preview (see below).

“A lot of companies have told the greatest cosmic stories over the past 20 years in comics using concepts invented for DC,” King said. “With this story, DC’s going to take back its stars. We’re going to tell a cosmic story that’s better than anything Marvel or Image can do.”

The following plot is also revealed:

Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Joe Staton‘s run on Green Lantern in 1981, the Omega Men are a group of intergalactic renegades from the Vega star system. In their new take on the team, King and Indonesian artist Barnaby Bagenda infuse the book with a rebels-vs.-empire concept a la Star Wars but grounded in an impactful reality inspired by King’s work in the CIA as a counterterrorism operations officer.

The Citadel rules the Vega system with an iron hand — King figures it’s akin to somewhere between the height of the British Empire and occupied Europe circa 1943. The Green Lantern Corps are cosmic cops protecting the universe but the Citadel is off limits to them thanks to some shady dealings.

In an act of revolution, the Omega Men use a video to broadcast the death of Rayner — although the screen turns to fuzz during the killing blow, and we never actually see the White Lantern‘s body — and that causes all sorts of problems. The Lanterns are incensed that they can’t come in and investigate, and the power players of the Citadel take it upon themselves to apprehend the outlaws.

Regarding the death of Kyle Rayner:

The Omega Men is definitely an ambitious project for King on the whole. He remembers having three editors on the phone when writing Rayner’s death: “It was like, ‘Oh, you can use Kyle Rayner,’ and I’m like, ‘Great, I’ll kill him!’ ”

King also says the story is on par with Star Wars, Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, and that: “I’m taking that opportunity to write an incredible, epic sci-fi adventure that kicks you in the gut and keeps going.”

THE OMEGA MEN #1

Writer: Tom King

Art: Barnaby Bagenda, José Marzán, Jr.

Description:

The Omega Men are back in an all-new series! They’ve murdered White Lantern Kyle Rayner and now, the universe wants them to pay! Who are these intergalactic criminals – and is there more to their actions than meets the eye?

Review: Guardians 3000 #8

Today we bid a sad farewell to Marvel’s only true Cosmic book, Guardians 3000.

It’s sad, really, that Marvel wouldn’t commit to this true example of Cosmic, but will commit to all the truly terrible pseudo-cosmic books like GotGINO, NINO, etc.

This issue wraps the series and paves the way for a re-telling of The Korvac Saga during Marvel’s upcoming Secret Wars event.  The quality of the writing and storyline is light years ahead of everything else Marvel is calling “cosmic” these days.

Abnett weaves a complicated and riveting ending to what would now be called a “limited series” with the G3K crew playing a pivotal role in using Korvac to try to correct the damage being done to the universe by Dr. Doom at the start of the Secret Wars event.

The art is much improved from the first several issues of this series and should be much more palatable to most readers.

I am truly sad to see this book ending.  I hope that Abnett’s retelling of The Korvac Saga continues the fine quality represented by this, Marvel’s only truly cosmic book.  Reward this quality by buying this book and leaving the pseudo-cosmic trash like NINO and GotGINO on the shelf.  That will send Marvel a message that there is a market for good quality cosmic

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy #27 (Bendys)

The cover teases “The End?”  Oh – please let it be so.  The end of Bendis’ run on this book, at least.  He’s done everything he possibly could to run it into the ground.  It deserves to be put out of its misery.

This absolutely terrible storyline is finally brought to its inevitably stupid end.  Thank God.  I don’t think I could’ve handled any more of the sit-com type banter between Star-Lord and Kitty.  It was groan and eyeball-roll time every time they interacted.  This has to be the most stupid comic book marriage of all time.

And of course, Bendys couldn’t resist throwing in a bunch of “Blam!  Murdered You’s” any time he could squeeze one into Rocket’s dialogue box.  He obviously hasn’t given up on that catchphrase and no doubt dreams of the cash to be made having it emblazoned on millions of tee shirts sporting Rocket’s image.

Hey Bendys – did you never come to the simple realization that the comic didn’t have to be an even more ridiculous version of the movie?  Alternatively, the comic could actually be written as the GOOD source material that the movie writers then have to water down to make palatable to the great unwashed masses.  You know – just like what Gunn did to the original well-written DnA source material and is doing again using the good DnA source material for the sequel.  He’s staying away from your stuff because it’s so bad.  Probably no one else will tell you this simple truth out of politeness.  I’m not polite.  But – take it to heart anyway.  Do the right thing and leave this book to a more talented writer.  Cosmic isn’t your thing.  Follow your dream and go write TV sit-coms and rom-coms.

The art this time out is variable – at times impressive and at times jarringly bad.  It doesn’t save this book.  It’s just par for the course.  Bad writing and commensurate art.

Let’s all join hands and pray that Bendis moves on to something else after this Secret Wars atrocity stumbles to its end.  I guess it would be too much to hope for to have Bendis, Loeb, Brevoort, and Alonso all gone after this event.  But we can always dream of a time when they are just bad memories.

No Kang The Conqueror For Avengers Movies; Fox Owns Him

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20779:]]

Scratch one more cool character off the Marvel Cinematic Universe list as Kang The Conqueror is owned by Fox Studios.

A hopeful fan questioned Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn about the use of Kang on Facebook, with Gunn replying the character is owned by Fox.

Gunn also let it be known Fox owns the rights to the alien race, the Shi’ar, as well; so both Kang and the Shi’ar won’t be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or any Avengers movie any time soon.

Gunn did let it be known they chose the characters that are appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 a while ago.

Regarding Kang The Conqueror, the time-travelling Avengers foe first appeared in Fantastic Four #19 in 1963 as Nathaniel Richards/Rama-Tut, which is why Fox probably owns him. He first appeared as Kang in Avengers #8 in 1964.

Likewise, the Shi’ar first appeared in X-Men #97 back in 1976, and we can also guess Fox probably also owns the rights to the members of the Imperial Guard with Gladiator and such.

I guess the good news is that both Kang and the Shi’ar can appear in Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic Four movies.

Watch: Guardians of the Galaxy Josh Brolin VFX Breakdown Video

Check out a visual effects breakdown video above for Josh Brolin’s Thanos in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Luma Pictures is responsible for the VFX.

For Marvel’s distinctive space opera, Luma topped the mix of CG environments and FX, with their creation of Thanos – one of the most notorious and powerful super villains of the Marvel Universe.

Brolin was also featured as Thanos at the end of Avengers 2. It will be interesting to see if Thanos shows up in more of the Marvel movies as we head toward Avengers: Infinity War.

Regarding Thanos in Avengers 2, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige explained Thanos wasn’t in Odin’s vault and there are two Infinity Gauntlet gloves.

It’s also probable Thanos could be featured in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which hits May 5, 2017.

The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 kicks off May 4, 2018.

Marvel Comics Teases “All-New All Different” For Fall 2015

It looks as if the rest of the Marvel Comics readers will catch up with the Marvel COSMIC readers as a new teaser has been released stating “All-New All-Different” for Fall 2015.

Because of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Marvel Comics cancelled Marvel Cosmic and replaced it with a parody version of itself.

It’s not exactly clear what is going to happen with the rest of Marvel, but a few changes are already known as the Avengers team revealed on FCBD will stick around.

The teaser also reads “8 Months Later…” as the titles will be jumping ahead eight months following Secret Wars.

James Gunn Clarifies Chris Pratt F-Bomb Comments

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20638:]]

Earlier saw Chris Pratt talk about his Marvel contract which may hint at an appearance in The Avengers: Infinity War movies.

The article also saw Pratt mention how director James Gunn motivated him on set, with than more than a few times Gunn dropping the f-bomb.

Via GQ:

“I think that he had gotten a lot of success over the past few years being the funny sidekick,” says Gunn, “which means that he always has to juggle to entertain everybody. And the truth is, Chris didn’t trust himself to just be Chris Pratt—and how desirable that is to an audience.”

“I thought I was bad,” Pratt concurs. “I thought I was doing bad acting. I would just think: My bullshit meter’s going off. This screams inauthentic to me.” Pratt says that Gunn had little patience with this. “He’s like, ‘Who gives a shit what you think? I don’t fucking care!’ “

He’d literally say that?

“Yes! He’d be, ‘It’s not your fucking movie, dude, it’s mine! Trust me and shut the fuck up and do what the fuck I tell you, and scream it!’ He’s like, ‘More! Louder!’ I would get pissy because as an actor, you sometimes hate that direction: Louder, faster. But it’s true—sometimes you have to be louder, speak more clearly, let the words do the work, and just get out of the way.”

Now Gunn has taken to his Facebook page to offer the following:

Nice GQ article on Chris, in which I’m heavily quoted and there is a bit of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 talk. Although I’m often very honest in articles about myself, I’m usually much more careful when I am interviewed about others. You never know what someone else is sensitive about. This was probably the most honest I’ve been in an interview about an actor, and both Chris and I talk about how he would initially tend to get in the way with his thoughts on set (and also the accompanying self-judgments). I’d yell at him and tell him I didn’t give a shit what he thinks. It seems kind of mean and funny in the interview, but I think it’s an important thing for all artists to remember: IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK. What matters is the work and the act of creation. It is our job to DO, not to judge. Constant assessment of what we are doing, especially while we are doing it, creates a stilted and needy piece of artwork, when the world needs boldness. If you’re a true artist, the world needs YOU, not what you think you should be.

My job with Chris on set was to help get him out of his head. Chris was able to transform his way of acting throughout the making of Guardians and I’m really proud of what he’s done (and, like him, I get teary when I think of what we’ve got coming in GotG2.)

It’s all good as the two are reteaming for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and likely a third Guardians film.

Chris Pratt & Guardians of the Galaxy Speculated For Avengers: Infinity War

THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR TEASER

Some details on Chris Pratt’s Marvel contract come to light hinting Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy may be appearing in The Avengers: Infinity War movies, which shouldn’t be a surprise with cosmic bad guy Thanos being the villain.

Pratt recently spoke to GQ where he let it be known his Marvel contract extends through five movies.

“..I’m tied to doing three more, or five more, Guardians of the Galaxy or whatever it is, you know, two more Guardians plus another couple…”

The article goes on to note that they think Pratt actually means he is doing Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in addition to two spin-off projects, which we assume could be The Avengers: Infinity War movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is already in the works and is currently being written by James Gunn.

Gunn previously mentioned the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie about a month ago.

“I knew for a long time what the story of the second one was gonna be,” Gunn said, before teasing, “And the third one!”

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” has a May 5, 2017 release; “The Avengers: Infinity War” Part 1 kicks off May 4, 2018 followed by Part 2 on May 3, 2019.

Michael Rooker Hints At Star-Lord’s Father; Possibly Starhawk?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20396:]]

Fans of the comics as well as the movie know Star-Lord isn’t entirely human, which is why he looks to have survived using the Power Gem at the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

James Gunn has already stated Star-Lord’s father will not be the same as in the comics, but hasn’t revealed just who it may be.

Now Michael Rooker potentially gives a big clue as Rooker is asked the question while appearing on KQRS Radio out of Minnesota.

Worth a mention is that Rooker states he does know the identity of Star-Lord’s father, and that if we read the comics, we do know as well.

“I know who the daddy is. I can’t say. If you actually dug those comics out of your closet and read them, then you will know who the daddy is.”

Rooker seems to imply the comics are old (as you keep old comics in your closet), which of course would be older Guardians of the Galaxy issues and appearances.

The team has been around since the 1960s, so it’s probably save to assume it’s an older Guardians of the Galaxy character, which many Marvel Cosmic fans think to be Starhawk.

Another possibility for Star-Lord’s father is Adam Warlock, which interestingly enough shares a similar origin with Starhawk in that they are both artificial beings (or at least partly). Actually, Starhawk’s mom is the female equivalent of Adam Warlock known as Kismet.

I’m curious what Gunn is going to do if he uses Adam Warlock, as the Vision was introduced with the gem in the forehead for Avengers 2 and is an artificial being as well.

And if Starhawk is used, will he be from the future? Or will Gunn be writing something totally different just using the “Starhawk” name?

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” hits May 5, 2017.

CM Punk To Co-Write Drax Comic For Marvel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20243:]]

Former WWE Superstar soon-to-be turned UFC Fighter CM Punk has been announced as co-writer on a new Drax ongoing series for Marvel.

Punk, aka Phil Brooks, recently wrote a story for the Thor Annual for Marvel.

The success of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie has spawned many spinoff comics for the different characters. Gamora gets her own ongoing as well from Nicole Perlman, who wrote an earlier version of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie script and is co-writing the Captain Marvel movie.

Regarding the new Drax series, CM Punk made the announcement today at C2E2 with mention the title will launch later this year. The cover for the first issue will be by Ed McGuinness. It’s presently unknown who the co-writer and artist are (Andy Lanning wouldn’t be a bad choice as co-writer) for the series.

While no plot details are known, we see mention of “Intergalactic Fight Club” on the Drax cover, which was featured in Rocket Raccoon #1 as well.

Hopefully Punk will do his homework by reading the 2005 Drax mini-series, Annihilation and Abnett and Lanning’s 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy series that inspired the near billion dollar movie.

Our advice to Punk would be to skip BendisGuardians series in its entirety.

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy #26

As far as silly situation-comedy-ish cliché goes, I will say that this issue is among the best of the worst.  Faint praise, but really that’s all it deserves.

On the up side, the well-worn clichés of someone being unwillingly elected to office, the duck-out-of-water scenarios, the enjoyment of the good life that the group falls backward into, etc. are not over-played to the point of being offensive.  But make no mistake – if you read this, you’ll be wading through clichés so familiar that you’ll know what’s going to happen before you turn each page.

On the down side, Bendys just can’t seem to get the character’s voices right.  He inexplicably has Drax yelling Shakespearean English such as, “Have at thee!” as if he suddenly channeled Thor.  He portrays Drax as completely unfamiliar with Earth culture even though Drax began life as a human.  This isn’t the historical Drax from Marvel Comics or even the Drax from Gunn’s movie.  This is some inferior, newly created Drax – born of Bendys’ unfamiliarity with the character.

Bendis has never gotten Quill right, either.  Quill is no longer a leader capable of single-handedly taking on a Herald and winning.  He’s just a goofball screw-up who falls bass-ackward into situations and either has others rescue him from his stupidity or his srew-ups just luckily turn out right.

This incredibly stupid storyline of Quill getting married to Kitty is unspeakably asinine.  I weep for what cosmic has become under Bendys, Brevoort, Loeb, and Alonso.   This relationship is like every other one you see on any number of clichéd network situation comedies where the woman is the wise voice of reason and the guy is an idiot screw-up who couldn’t tie his own shoes without her.   I wish Bendis would just give this comic up and take a job writing one of those television rom-coms.  I’d call it good riddance.

The art and coloring has its ups-and-downs, too.  Some panels are impressively rendered and colored.  Others have Quill and Kitty with distorted facial expressions right out of a Looney-Tunes cartoon.

I suppose the Looney-Tunes comparison is fitting, though.  Because, after-all, Bendys is just writing farce.  That is the ultimate disappointment of what Marvel is now calling cosmic.  It isn’t serious anymore.  It is just second-rate farce to their serious Earth-bound superhero stories.

Captain America 2, Thor 2 & Guardians of the Galaxy Now On Netflix

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20240:]]

Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy are now available to stream on Netflix.

However, the catch is the movies are streaming in certain foreign countries.

Users are reporting on Reddit that using the Chrome “Hola Better Net” extension, the movies are accessible anywhere.

How it works is, Netflix knows the location of where you are viewing the movies based on your cpu/internet provider settings, and only certain movies are available in select countries.

The Hola extension enables users to mask and change their location via a VPN. So for example, if you are in the U.S., you can use Hola to change your location to the Netherlands and view the movies.

Apparently, Netflix has been under pressure from the movie studios as they have caught on to the trick, and Netflix may be banning users who use VPNs to access the service.

It’s unclear where this falls under copyright laws as technically you are not downloading the movie, and it is “available” to stream.

So here is your fair warning: If you decide to go the Hola route, do so at your own risk.

Reportedly, the Marvel movies will be readily available on Netflix later this year.

Dave Bautista Wants Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy Crossover

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20193:]]

With the Marvel Avengers: Infinity War movies set to feature Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against Thanos, maybe the Guardians of the Galaxy will lend a hand.

While it’s not yet confirmed the Guardians will appear, Dave Bautista, aka Drax the Destroyer, says he would like to see a crossover with the Avengers.

“Strictly as a fan boy I hope that the worlds collide and we get together with the Avengers,” Bautista told the UK’s Metro.

Bautista is also playing a villain in the upcoming James Bond The Spectre movie.

“It’s fun to play a bad guy. I think I make an interesting one – not your stereotypical bad guy,” Bautista said.

Dave Bautista will also be returning as Drax for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which has a May 5, 2017 release.

Guardians 3000 Not The Title For Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Says James Gunn

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20177:]]

A few days ago it was reported the title for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is Guardians 3000.

Guardians 3000 is a current Marvel comic book from the writer who inspired the original movie, Dan Abnett, so it seemed a possibility.

Now, however, director James Gunn has taken to Twitter to shoot down the rumor.

“BTW – I’m getting a lot of questions – there is NO truth to the rumor GotG2 is called Guardians 3000. I don’t know where @prodweek got that,” Gunn tweeted.

It was thought that if Guardians 3000 was the title to the sequel, that Gunn may have been featuring the original Guardians, as Abnett’s comic centers on the characters from the future. There is a mystery surrounding the father of Star-Lord, which will be different for the movie than the comic, with Cosmic fans speculating Quill’s father might be Starhawk.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” has a May 5, 2017 release.

Marvel Phase 2 Contains Same Star Wars Easter Eggs

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20174:]]

It seems just about everyone missed this one as Kevin Feige has let it be known he included the same Star Wars Easter Egg in each of the Marvel Phase 2 movies.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, Feige said he is a big Star Wars fan and offered:

So is this a spoiler for Ant-Man… not really. I’m obsessed with Star Wars. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. I went to USC. So I’m obsessed with Star Wars – and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional, including that beat that you referenced. It sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one.

Regarding the Easter Eggs:

Iron Man 3 featured Guy Pearce’s character, Aldrich Killian, getting his arm cut off by Tony Stark when he heats up Iron Man’s suit and the end of the movie.

Thor 2 features Thor getting his arm “cut off” by Loki.

Captain America 2 features a flashback where Bucky had his own arm cut off when he fell from the train in Captain America: The First Avenger.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy also had a similar Star Wars Easter Egg with Gamora cutting Groot’s arm off (this might be the enigmatic Easter Egg Gunn keeps referring to that he says everyone missed).

Those are the Star Wars Easter Eggs known to date as The Avengers 2 is yet to be released – so be on the look out for someone getting their arm cut off just like Luke Skywalker from Empire Strikes Back.

Perlman is also due to write a Gamora comic book for Marvel comics.

George Lucas Thinks Marvel Will Do A Howard the Duck Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20109:]]

Back in 1986, Star Wars director George Lucas executive produced the Howard The Duck movie, which is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.

Then last year saw James Gunn include Howard in the post-credit scene for Guardians of the Galaxy.

While Gunn has said there are no plans for a Howard The Duck movie, George Lucas recently stated he thinks Marvel will remake it.

“Even Howard the Duck is a cult classic,” Lucas said at the Borough of Manhattan Community College theater for the Tribeca Film Festival, reports THR. “I have a feeling that Marvel’s gonna redo it because of the technology they have today.”

Lucas had reservations back in ’86 about Howard The Duck being any success as “you can’t put a dwarf in a duck suit and make it work!” However, now Lucas has changed his tune.

“It’s a digital duck. When you have a digital duck, you can do anything. You can make it act,” Lucas said of Gunn’s version.

Marvel Comics also recently launched a Howard The Duck comic book.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Said To Have Abnett’s Title Guardians 3000

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20094:]]

Update: James Gunn has said this isn’t true.

Long story short: Dan Abnett’s 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Comics comic book was the inspiration for the near billion dollar movie of the same name. Abnett was fired off the book by Marvel Comics executives (for some reason), and now, years later, is writing a new Guardians book, Guardians 3000.

Now it’s learned that Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy sequel may have the title “Guardians 3000.”

The info comes from the website Production Weekly, which looks to provide lists of titles for movies that are currently in production.

The Guardians 3000 comic book features the original Guardians of the Galaxy from the future. Could Gunn being going with some of those characters? Gunn recently stated GOTG 2 is about fathers, and some fans are speculating Star-Lord’s father is Starkhawk, a member of the Guardians from the future.

In addition, Gunn let it be known that Marvel Studios felt his approach for the sequel was risky. If Gunn was just doing more of the same from the first movie, Marvel definitely wouldn’t think it was a risky approach. So we can obviously guess, Gunn is coming at Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in a different way. We get further proof of that in an interview with Gunn from the Avengers 2 Red Carpet premiere where he stopped short of stating Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was more serious, but instead chose to use the wording “deeper” in relation to character development.

It’s possible Gunn could address the rumor head on, as the director is pretty vocal on his social networks.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” has a May 5, 2017 release.

Review: Guardians 3000 #7

Sadly this is the next to last issue of G3K, and with Marvel’s hostility toward this, their only true cosmic comic book, it will likely not return from hiatus after the silliness of the “Secret Wars” event has reached it’s no doubt too long in coming and astoundingly annoying conclusion.

Interestingly, the apparent cause of the Secret Wars event debuts in this book – but since the zombies aren’t buying this book, I guess they’ll have to wait and read it in whatever generic Avengers title they’re buying en masse these days.

One of the highlights of this book is how it indirectly points out how small and petty Quill’s GotGINO team has become under Bendis and Gunn.  Star-Lord is pointed out as lacking in leadership skills and proves that point repeatedly over the course of the storyline.  This is not the leader of men that Peter Quill was in times past – a guy who could take out a Herald of Galactus single-handedly.  It is Bendis’ and Gunn’s twenty-something goofball who is repeatedly outclassed by the original GotG team.

And, of course, when the situation takes a turn for the worse, what does this weak, pitiful, farcical, buffoon-ish, Bendis-fied version of Quill do?  Hits the speed-dial button to call in the Avengers, as always.  Vance rightfully points out that the GotG are better qualified to handle the situation.  And Quill disagrees!  Jeez!  This buffoon version of Star-Lord has drunk the kool-aid and bought into Bendis’ propaganda.

I’ll go on record as not being that big a fan of the Korvac Saga, but Abnett is able to weave an interesting tale from that source material.

Leon’s art and Delgado’s colors are vast improvements from the first five issues.  The teams look more like themselves and less like some abstract art version of the team.

Rush out and buy this book, and its TPB.  Quality needs to be rewarded, and very little of what Marvel is now calling “cosmic” has any quality to be rewarded.  Guardians 3000 is the shining antithesis of Bendis.  Rush out and buy this book!

James Gunn Talks Guardians of the Galaxy 2 & 3

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20050:]]

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20049:]]

James Gunn recently attended the Red Carpet premiere for The Avengers 2 where he discussed Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and even mentioned a third film.

Vulture caught up with Gunn who teased the sequel will be more about Star-Lord and his father. Star-Lord’s father was absent from the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but is said to be an alien (though apparently SL’s father will be different than the comics).

“There’s a lot of stuff I’m excited about in the new movie,” Gunn offered. “Listen, I’m still excited about Star-Lord’s character and where he goes. At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it’s exciting to go there.”

As Gunn notes “fathers,” perhaps he is also talking about the “fathers” of the other characters as well. Maybe we’ll learn more about the Gamora, Nebula and Thanos relationship or even about Drax’s origins. It’s even possible we could learn more about where Groot came from.

With the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie being such a success, Disney quickly announced a sequel, so it should be no surprise that Gunn mentions the possibility of a third film.

“I knew for a long time what the story of the second one was gonna be,” Gunn said, before teasing, “And the third one!”

Update: Gunn offers more in the following video with: “I think it’s about getting to know the characters a little bit more… and also get a little bit more – I don’t want to say serious – but go a little bit deeper with who the characters are.”

Gunn also says we’ll get to know more from Gamora, Nebula and Yondu “in a way we got to know some of the characters in the first movie.”

Update #2: Gunn offered the follwing on Facebook:

I did five short interviews on the red carpet at the Age of Ultron premiere, and it’s all been distilled to three topics: 1) Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is about Fatherhood, 2) We’ll get to know Gamora, Nebula, and Yondu more in the sequel, and 3) I think the mix for Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is better than Awesome mix Vol. 1. There. I just saved you ten thousand articles.

PS All of this is subject to change. Although I have a very intense and specific 70 page treatment (or scriptment as it’s often called, because it contains dialogue), I am just now diving into the actual script. If inspiration strikes I can, and often do, diverge wildly from my original plan. In a couple weeks, Guardians 2 could center around the love triangle of Awesome Android, Paste Pot Pete, and Taserface, backed by an all-Spice-Girls soundtrack.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” has a May 5, 2017 release.

Guardians of the Galaxy’s Nicole Perlman Eyed To Write Captain Marvel With Meg LeFauve

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20041:]]

It’s learned that Kevin Feige and Marvel are eyeing the writing duo of Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve to write the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel (Ms. Marvel to Cosmic fans) movie.

THR reports that Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige was impressed with their separate takes on Captain Marvel and has thought it best to combine the two for “sensational results.”

It’s said that Perlman and LeFauve are currently in talks, and that no director is presently involved.

Nicole Perlman wrote the first draft of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie and recognized the potential for the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning comic from early on. Perlman was part of the Marvel Writers Program back in 2009 where she chose Guardians of the Galaxy to adapt. It’s been said that Perlman’s Guardians of the Galaxy was closer to the comic book version and a more serious take on the story and characters than the James Gunn version. Perlman is also set to write a Gamora series for Marvel, which is more serious take on the character than the current Marvel Comics parody versions of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Meg LeFauve co-wrote Pixar’s upcoming Inside Out and also has producer credits with The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys.

Captain Marvel has a November 2, 2018 release and will not be a part of The Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

James Gunn Loves New Daredevil Netflix Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20005:]]

James Gunn, no stranger to voicing his opinion, offers this thoughts on the new Marvel Daredevil series on Netflix.

Gunn offers he has always loved the character since he was a boy and loved the new series.

Gunn also says the scripts have been true to the character.

Via Gunn’s Facebook:

I have loved the character of Daredevil since I was a little boy. Outside of Batman, Daredevil probably has more great comic book arcs than any other character. From Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli to Kevin Smith to Ed Brubaker and on and on, the character has elicited some of the best work from some of the greatest comic book storytellers.

So I was a bit frightened last night when I dug into the new Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series. I’m a rough TV critic – I love five or so shows on the air right now, but that’s about it – and I didn’t want to see one of my favorite characters come up short. On top of that I really like Steven S. DeKnight, the showrunner, and Drew Goddard, the creator, both as people and as creative forces (Spartacus, Cloverfield, Cabin in the Woods, etc).

Well, I love it. The cast is great. Charlie Cox is just awesome, and Elden Henson is about as an amazing a Foggy as I could have imagined. The fight sequences stand alongside Spartacus and Rome as some of the best TV fight sequences ever (so, the best TV fight sequences ever not performed in togas). And the scripts have been touching and on point and true to the character. In the first few episodes, I cried twice: once in a scene between young Matt and battling Jack, and again when I realized this character I loved so much for so long had been brought to television with such spirit, love, and care.

What I’m saying is, there’s a huge Marvel event going on right now, and it’s Daredevil on Netflix I hope you guys check it out.

James Gunn is directing Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for Marvel, which has a May 5, 2017 release.

Animated Marvel Cinematic Universe Project In Development

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19938:]]

At one time it was reported the Guardians of the Galaxy movie was actually going to be animated.

While that obviously didn’t turn out to be true, it has now become known an animated project to be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in development (note: the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy animated series is not connected to the movie).

Newsarama reports during the final day of the Emerald City Comic Con at the “Marvel Animation Presents” panel, Marvel’s VP of Animation Development and Production Cort Lane confirmed an animated project is in the works.

Next, a fan asks about whether the animation team will produce something that takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I can’t announce anything, but things are in the works,” said Lane, calling out the upcoming Netflix series as a proof of concept for things that tie-in to the larger world.

Nothing else was said about the project, but it will be interesting to see what they do with an animated version of the MCU. Will the animated series/movies use existing characters? Or introduce new characters similar to the above mentioned Netflix series? Perhaps a mix of both?

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy #25 (Bendys)

This one is slightly less horrible than usual.

That’s not meant as a compliment.  Every once in a while, Bendys screws up and writes something halfway decent.  At least this time, he doesn’t make the team seem like guest stars in their own book and he’s able to balance their appearances and contribution to the mission with those of the X-Men, the character’s he’s vastly more comfortable writing and appears to vastly prefer to write.

And I wish Bendis would go back to writing more traditional characters and leave cosmic alone.

It’s still a bad story, made all the worse by the appearance of NINO with all his typical screw ups.  He’s even referred to multiple times by multiple characters as a child.  Why would these supposed “Guardians of the Galaxy” put a child into combat?  Stupid.  Typical Bendis.  Typical Bonso.  Typical Marvel Pseudo-Cosmic.  They’ve just turned what they’re calling “cosmic” into a farce – a running joke – that only zombies could love.

The annoying hot-potato game with The Black Vortex continues in this chapter of this increasingly annoying and overly long story about absolute power corrupting absolutely.  This excruciatingly hackneyed story could’ve been told in one issue and is not deserving of an “event.”  Or in this case, a disappointing “non-event” would be the better descriptor.

At least the art is not bad this time out.  Schiti appears to be growing into the role of depicting pseudo-cosmic characters.

Frankly, I’ll be glad when this comic goes on hiatus for the upcoming silliness of the totally un-necessary sales gimmicky Marvel reboot.  Maybe Bendys won’t come back to it when the hiatus is over.  That would be something worth celebrating.
