DOOMED: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR Debuts At Comic-Con

TRAILER

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20649:]]

The documentary, DOOMED: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR will see its world premiere take place at Comic-Con this Summer.

The documentary sheds new light on the mysterious circumstances surrounding the legendary cult classic and “lost” Roger Corman film, The Fantastic Four.

In 1994, Roger Corman was tapped to produce this Marvel superhero story on a very small film budget. The film was ultimately shelved prior to distribution, but a VHS copy was mysteriously leaked and the movie became a darling of film bootleggers and, more recently, web pirates.  Rumors and speculation surrounding the production have become as much a part of the lore of the film as the movie itself.

The feature length documentary was edited and directed by east coast film studies professor and independent filmmaker, Marty Langford and executive produced by LA-based casting director, Mark Sikes.  Sikes was the casting assistant on the 1994 Concorde-New Horizons / Neue Constantin co-production, and was on site at Corman’s studio, offices and locations during the 28 day production.

The original Oley Sassone-directed film stars Alex Hyde-White, Rebecca Staab, Jay Underwood, Carl Ciarfalio and Michael Bailey Smith as Marvel’s “First Family of Super Heroes”, along with Joseph Culp who played ‘Dr. Doom’. These principals are all included in DOOMED: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

Other interview subjects include:

-Roger Corman, executive producer

-Jonathan Fernandez, VP or Marketing for Concorde/New Horizons

-Glenn Garland, editor

-Chris Gore, on-set journalist

-Sean Howe, author, “Marvel Comics: The Untold Story”

-Lloyd Kaufman, president Troma Entertainment

-Mark Sikes, casting assistant

-John Vulich, make up/effects

The world premiere of this documentary comes mere weeks before the August 7th debut of the new 20th Century Fox reboot, Fantastic Four, directed by Josh Trank.  Constantin Films is among the worldwide distributors of this reboot, a role that would have been impossible without their involvement in the 1994 original film.

The trailer for DOOMED: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR has racked up nearly 400,000 views on YouTube.  Distribution rights for the documentary are still available.

DOOMED: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR will screen at the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival.  Judged by a panel of industry luminaries, the CCI-IFF screens genre-related films in the following categories: Action/Adventure, Animation, Comics-Oriented, Documentary (Pop Culture–Related), Horror/Suspense, Humor, and Science Fiction/Fantasy. Awards and prizes will be given out at Comic-Con, with film screenings all four days of the event.

Executive Producer Mark Sikes and editor/director Marty Langford will be in attendance at the screening to introduce the documentary.

Josh Trank Fired From Star Wars Because Of Fantastic Four Problems

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20331:]]

Disney just announced that Josh Trank had left Star Wars, and now details as to the possible reasoning behind the departure are becoming known.

THR is now stating that Trank was fired from Star Wars due to problems on the set of Fox’s Fantastic Four movie.

Actually, word first surfaced about problems with Trank’s behavior while filming Fantastic Four months ago as anonymous posts on the TigerDroppings.com message boards surfaced in November 2014 that mirror THR’s own report.

One anonymous poster even stated Trank would not be doing the spinoff (or any other movies for that matter):

Trank did so much damage to the house that Jim Gianopulos came to Baton Rouge and personally apologized to the owners. Trust me, Trank’s career is done. There will be no major study sequels or spin offs for him. He’ll be lucky to get the sequel to a Stabbing at Leia’s 21st Birthday.

Another post reads:

After the crap Trank pulled in Baton Rouge, i doubt he ever directs a studio picture again. He will certainly never work for Fox. At this point that F4 reboot might never get released.

Another:

A buddy of mine was on the crew. Trank showed up to set late or so high he couldn’t speak almost everyday. Some days he didn’t show up at all. He treated crew terribly. He trashed the house the production company rented for him. From what I’m told he did a couple hundred grand worth of damage.

Another post says that Trank was fired following filming:

Also heard he was fired after wrapping and other are working on it post production.

Note: The THR reports states “producers Simon Kinber and Hutch Parker had to step in to help pull the film together” and “given the issues with Trank’s performance, the production added Stephen Rivkin to help pull the film together.”

The TigerDroppings message board also stated major reshoots were taking place in LA:

I am working with some of the crew on another movie down here. They were told FF is reshooting the entire third act in LA because of how bad it came out.

THR seems to downplay the reshoots as well as the damage to the house. THR states “small dogs” were responsible for $100,000 in damage to the house, and regarding the reshoots, THR says the actors only re-filmed on weekends due to other commitments, and that the most recently reshoots took place at the end of April. Kinberg actually had to leave recent filming on X-Men: Apocalypse to help finish Fantastic Four.

THR’s report does offer the following regarding Trank’s issues:

…sources say reports of the young director’s unusual conduct during the making of Fox’s upcoming Fantastic Four movie had raised alarm among Lucasfilm executives that were entrusting him with the second Star Wars standalone film.

…behavior described by one insider as “erratic” and at times “very isolated.” Trank did not offer clear direction, this person adds, saying, “If you’ve got someone who can’t answer questions or who isn’t sure or is in hiding, that’s not good.”

…A Fox spokesman says the studio is “very happy with the movie and we can’t wait for audiences to see it” but acknowledges, “There were definitely some bumps in the road.”

…Trank seemed “like one of these kids who comes to the NBA with all the talent and none of the character-based skills to handle it. There’s equipment he doesn’t yet have.”

…According to sources, Trank was sometimes indecisive and uncommunicative.

THR also says Simon Kinberg, who wrote/produced Fantastic Four and produces Star Wars, is the one to have communicated his displeasure with Trank straight to LucasFilm’s Kathleen Kennedy. As the Disney exes heard more about the problems, it’s said “they became less confident in handing over the film to him.”

The Star Wars spinoff is slated for a May 2018 release; “Fantastic Four” hits this August.

Fantastic Four Cast Talks X-Men (Video)

Are there any connections between the X-Men and the Fantastic Four?

Maybe in Miles Teller’s wildest dreams.

MTV interviewed the cast questioning if there are any references to the X-Men in Fantastic Four as they could be set in the same universe, and Simon Kinberg is involved with both franchises.

Nothing much is offered other than Teller stating about Kinberg: “He is the most important dude at Fox. Fore sure. He creates all those worlds. He does it beautifully. I love what he did with the X-Men.”

Teller and Kate Mara than joke about Reed Richards.

“I think you can tell Mystique falls in love with Reed,” Teller jokes.

Kate Mara than interjects, “My god. In your dreams.”

“I don’t tell Simon which beautiful actress to fall in love with Reed,” Teller says. “He just hit the nail on the head with Kate.  She loves it. She loved being the only girl on set. Oh my, God [laughter].”

Mara is than asked if it’s hard falling in love with Reed, where she makes it known she signed a multi-picture deal, which sounds like three movies.

“It’s impossible. I’ve got a couple more movies to make still. I have time,” Mara says.

Fantastic Four Cast Talks Saying Classic Lines, Costumes & Being Super Heroes (Video)

Fantastic Four has come along way since earlier reports of the movie mentioned the characters wouldn’t be super heroes or wearing costumes. At one time it was even said their powers were more comparable to disabilities than anything that gives them the ability to save the day.

All that seems to be changed with the latest trailer as we do see the Fantastic Four in costume as well as wielding their powers seemingly for the good of all mankind.

Now the cast offers the movie will also feature the FF’s well-known dialogue from the comics, as well as the FF will be superheroes, and the cast teases the look of the costumes.

Kate Mara confirms by the end of the movie, fans will get to see the Fantastic Four in their iconic familiar suits.

“Yes,” Mara responds with a deep voice.

Miles Teller gives a questioning look toward Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan offering possibly that the suits we see is what we will get: “I would say, go by what you see. I think, at this point, our suits are out there. You see our suits.”

Mara then adds the Fantastic Four are super heroes.

“We are super heroes for a lot of the film, but you are also with us for a decent about of time before that happens,” Mara said.

It’s also learned the voice for The Thing will be Jamie Bell’s voice using a modulator.

“It will be a lot of my voice modulated slightly,” Bell said.

Regarding The Thing saying his classic line from the comics – “it’s clobbering time” – Bell answers, “Possibly.”

Michael B. Jordan and Kate Mara also respond the same when questioned if the Human Torch will say “flame on.”

James Gunn Updates Guardians of the Galaxy 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19892:]]

Update: Gunn held another QnA where he revealed Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will start filming February 2016 at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.

James Gunn recently gave the new Periscope App a test drive where he answered questions regarding Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Marvel and other topics.

Gunn has been busy developing the sequel, in which he previously let it be known Marvel thought his latest approach was “risky.”

Screen Rant caught the QnA and jotted down the following:

Gunn has submitted his treatment for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to Marvel brass.

He has a follow-up meeting this Friday about the treatment and will begin the actual screenplay in about a week, in which he later added he is about 70 pages into it.

Gunn confirmed that Ronan is dead and that “not everything is going to happen in the movies as same as the comics.”

Gunn said fans will get to know the Guardians in the sequel in a “deeper way.”

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be in 3D.

Gunn offered they don’t do motion-capture work for Rocket and Groot, they just reference images at times.

They may have figured a way for Karen Gillan not to shave her head for Nebula.

Regarding the writing process of both movies, Gunn said he plots out the whole story, and then writes it after.

Other tidbits mentioned include:

Gunn has seen and liked Avengers 2; “lept for joy” about Spider-Man joining Marvel; current favorite comics are Silver Surfer, Wolverines and Secret Avengers; “really dug” the Fantastic Four trailer; would never direct an X-Men movie, and his favorite villain is Heath Ledger’s Joker.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” has a May 5, 2017 release date.

Fantastic Four Movie To Feature Comic Book Costumes

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:19685:]]

Though it was previously said we might not see costumes in the Fantastic Four reboot, images revealed some sort of outfit, which has been described as “containment suits.”

Now it’s learned Fantastic Four will feature more traditional looking costumes as well.

Miles Teller spoke about the Fantastic Four costumes with Screen Crush.

These are the beta versions of the costumes, which is great […] But, yeah it would be very odd if the Fantastic Four didn’t don the traditional costumes. You’ve got to. There is some servicing there. You’ve got to give that to the fans. That’s what it’s all about.

It’s also suggested that the costumes may feature the “F” logo and could possibly be revealed at the end of the movie (and not having to wait for the sequel).

Fantastic Four Trailer Breaks Records; Simon Kinberg Talks Potential X-Men Crossover

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18962:]]

Even though Fantastic Four has been taking a lot of heat online, I gotta admit that I did like the new trailer.

It takes a more serious science-fiction approach, which is what I wish we would have seen more from James Gunn and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

I’m happy to say we won’t be having a “Dance Off, Bro” moment at the end of Fantastic Four.

That said, even with all the haters online, the Fantastic Four trailer broke records for Fox as the Fantastic Four trailer is the most-watched trailer in 20th Century Fox’s history, even beating out X-Men: Days Of Future Past, which was the previous record-holder.

Speaking of the X-Men, it recently became known that Fox is considering a crossover with Fantastic Four.

Now while speaking with EW.com, writer/producer Simon Kinberg offers further details.

“The reboot of FanFour really needed to work in and of itself,” Kinberg said. “We were doing something pretty radical with the tone of the movie. If we wanted to find a way to connect them to the X-Men, we could. There’s a lot of precedent from the comics.”

From what Kinberg just said, it seems likely that if Fantastic Four is a success, an X-Men crossover will happen. Obviously, if FF tanks, we’ll probably get another reboot in a few years.

“Fantastic Four” has an August 7, 2015 release directed by Josh Trank starring Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm,  Kate Mara as Sue Storm and Toby Kebbell as Victor von Doom.

Fantastic Four 2015 Logo Revealed

It looks like we may have the official Fantastic Four logo.

The Fox Thailand Twitter page tweeted out the following image including the text (translated): “Preparing to meet some of the Fantastic Four has recently #movietwit.”

Obviously that is a rough translation, but it’s been said the Fantastic Four trailer is due to hit today. It’s possible the tweet is trying to state that or at least that the Fantastic Four trailer is coming soon.

Just yesterday saw a first look at Michael B. Jordan on the set of Fantastic Four as well as director Josh Trank and producer Simon Kinberg revealing details about the new film, and a possible look at the new costumes.

Update: Fantastic Four trailer is online and can be watched below.
