James Gunn is already thinking beyond Superman, and it might involve the Dark Knight. While promoting the upcoming DCU reboot, Gunn teased that the next chapter for the Man of Steel may not be a traditional sequel, hinting instead at the potential rumors of a World’s Finest team-up with Batman.
Gunn teases something different than Superman 2
When asked by EW.com if he’s already thinking about a Superman sequel, Gunn replied:
“What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”
That carefully worded response has fans speculating that Gunn isn’t just working on Superman 2, but something bigger, possibly a Batman crossover in the form of World’s Finest.
In the comics, World’s Finest is the long-running title pairing Superman and Batman as allies rather than rivals (as Zack Snyder did with Batman vs. Superman). It’s often used when the two icons team up to take on threats too big for one hero to handle, something the new DCU could use to build momentum after Superman launches.

World’s Finest instead of Brave and the Bold?
While Gunn’s Superman is already cast (David Corenswet), the DCU Batman has yet to be revealed. Gunn’s Batman was actually first teased in the Creature Commandos animated series.
While it has also been thought that the first live-action version of the DCU Caped Crusader will appear in The Brave and the Bold, there is doubt that the movie is happening. Instead, a World’s Finest film could serve as the introduction to the new Batman.
All roads lead to Justice League?
If Gunn is developing World’s Finest, it is also likely laying the groundwork for a new Justice League. Gunn also just confirmed a Wonder Woman movie is in development, and he also told EW the Justice League doesn’t yet exist in the DCU:
“…there is no Justice League in this world… not yet.”
Superman flies into theaters July 11.
