Milly Alcock Says Supergirl Is Messy And Surprising

Alcock said the role stood out to her because Kara is not the usual clean-cut superhero.

She described Supergirl as “messy” and “surprising,” with the character bringing a more complicated energy to the DCU. Gillespie agreed, calling Kara a complex, flawed character who is unapologetic and easy to root for.

Gillespie said Alcock was a major reason he wanted to make the movie, praising her performance and the way she carries the story.

Kara Is Dealing With Trauma

Alcock also explained what makes this version of Supergirl different from other heroes audiences have seen before.

According to Alcock, Kara is carrying major trauma after losing everyone and everything she knew. Rather than dealing with it in a healthy way, Kara is using escape, drinking, and distraction as a way to get through it.

Alcock said Kara is trying to find her place in the universe, but also trying to figure out who she is.

Craig Gillespie Praises Milly Alcock’s Performance

Gillespie praised Alcock’s ability to balance humor and drama, which he said is a difficult tone to pull off.

He also revealed the movie features five languages, including Kryptonian. Gillespie pointed to a three-and-a-half-minute scene between Kara and her father as one of Alcock’s standout moments, saying her performance gave him chills on set.

Alcock returned the praise, saying she trusted Gillespie and described him as open, warm, and willing to try things.

Krypto Is Kara’s Link To Her Past

The panel also touched on Krypto, who appears to have a major emotional role in the movie.

Alcock said Krypto is Kara’s “whole universe” and serves as her anchor to her family and past life. With Kara having lost her people and her home, Krypto becomes one of the few remaining connections to everything she once knew.

Woman Of Tomorrow Comic Inspires The Movie

Gillespie confirmed the film is based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with art by Bilquis Evely.

The director said he was immediately drawn to the comic’s rich visual style. He specifically mentioned the “space bus” sequence from the comic as something that caught his attention and influenced the movie.

Big Practical Action Scene Teased

Gillespie and Alcock also teased a major action sequence filmed at Leavesden Studios in London.

The scene was shot on the studio’s largest stage and involved a full city square build. Gillespie said Jason Momoa gets to ride a motorcycle through the sequence, while the production also used practical elements including tanks flying through the air and fire.

Alcock joked that the scene took longer than Gillespie first remembered, saying they spent around six weeks on that stage.
