Good news for Spider-Man fans in that Zendaya may actually not be playing Mary Jane Watson from the comics.
While it has been rumored that Zenda is playing Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Homecoming, in a new interview it’s learned that Marvel intentionally used different names to throw off bloggers and fans online, one of which also included the name “Michelle.”
Zendaya wouldn’t confirm or deny Mary Jane while speaking with THR, but did offer the following.
“People are going to react over anything,” Zenda said “But nothing [about who she is playing] is fact. It’s like, you guys are just making sh-t up at this point and then reacting to it. Whenever we were on set, one of us gets some random character name [on the call sheet]. [Bloggers were] like, ‘Oh they must be so and so.’ And we just crack up about it, because it’s like, ‘Whatever you want to think. You’ll find out.’ It’s funny to watch the guessing game.”
Further evidence that Zendaya may not be Mary Jane comes from the fact that her character in Spider-Man: Homecoming is not a romantic relationship for Peter Parker, as in the comics the two eventually go on to get married.
“My character is not romantic,” she said, with the article denying that she’s playing Peter Parker’s love interest in the movie. “My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she’s so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like, ‘My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not really on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading.”
Of course it is possible that Zendaya is playing Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but a version we simply haven’t seen before. I hope not that’s the case, and I don’t think Kevin Feige would drastically change the character from the comics. Regarding that “hair color” and “all that nonsense” doesn’t matter some people like to spew, I don’t buy it for a second; just about every red-head I know is unique, and it’s something that is a part of them. The population of red-heads in the world is like 1 or 2%, so to simply throw that away as not being a factor is ridicilous and quite assassinine. Just ask Karen Gillan:
