'Sinners' Tops Box Office As 'Minecraft' Smashes $700M

In another big win for Warner Bros., Ryan Coogler’s new horror movie, Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld overperforms and tops the weekend box office.

WB’s Minecraft also smashes past $700 million and still has a chance of hitting that magic billion-dollar number mark.

Regarding Sinners, the estimates were all over the place. They were actually as low as $30M at one time, and the high was around $45M.

However, thanks to great word-of-mouth, the fans showed up, and Sinners opened to over $48M. Add another $15.5M from the foreign gross, and Sinners is currently at $63.5M worldwide.

Reactions

Its Rotten Tomatoes Score is still through the roof with a 98% score from the critics; likewise, the fan score is at 97%. The CinemaScore is also the best for a horror movie in over 35 years with an “A.” The IMDb rating is a solid 8.2.

A Minecraft Movie was at first expected to take the #1 spot again this weekend for a third time, but as the weekend progressed, Minecraft and Sinners flipped and switched places.

It was originally estimated that Minecraft would bring in around $45M; the flick brought in $40.5M this past weekend, coming in at #2 overall. Definitely nothing to complain about as Minecraft has now passed $717M globally.

Things have slowed down a bit since that over-the-top opening weekend that beat out Barbie and Super Mario. In the same timeframe, Super Mario brought in over $390M domestically, while Minecraft has brought in nearly $344M. Super Mario finished with over $1.36 billion worldwide ($574.9 domestic; $785.9M foreign).
