Review:

Another poor offering of “Marvel Cosmic” came out this past Wednesday with Dan Slott and Mike Allred’s Silver Surfer #8. The issue reads as if it’s a rehashed Saturday morning cartoon that’s been told a dozen times over.

The Doctor and his Companion come upon a giant star whale in the episode titled, “The Beast Below.”  The Silver Surfer and Dawn come upon a giant space whale in the story titled “Tall Tales” where the two are accidentally swallowed due to Dawn driving the TARDIS Surfer’s board where they encounter two different alien species: one an anti-body and the other a disease, with the Surfer noting the disease species could basically kill everything and is the worst he’s ever encountered. Well, Dawn goes on to state they should talk to these creatures – simply because they are alive – and even though they might kill everything and even her, they should give them a chance. From there, they tell the tale of how they befriended a little person and they all went on space adventures, with the little person discovering even more little people who he now protects, which is meant to teach these other little space-whale-antibodies and disease-creatures a lesson.

It’s an eye-rolling issue where Slott attempts in an absurd way and rips of Doctor Who (again) to teach a lesson that the smaller things in life do matter even if they are equivalent to a weapon of mass destruction, and that we should stop and give them a chance even if we could be hurt in the process or billions of others (as it’s not their fault, right?).

Allred’s art isn’t much better than the story. I just don’t like the style at all. I prefer a photo-realistic serious take on my Marvel Cosmic.

Now if Silver Surfer is aimed at 7-year-olds, the story and art would be fine, but it’s not. The book is over-priced at four bucks, and no kid in second grade is paying that. This isn’t much better than the Silver Surfer being a line cook.
