A couple of days ago saw it mentioned that Marvel and Sony may name the new Spider-Man within a week, and now a reported shortlist of directors has surfaced.
Deadline offers an update corroborating that Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland are the frontrunners to play the new Spider-Man, though Matt Lintz and Charlie Rowe are still said to be in the mix.
Regarding possiblities to direct the 2017 standalone Spider-Man film, it’s said Marvel and Sony have Ted Melfi (St. Vincent) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) as their favorites, with John Francis Daley, Jonathan M. Goldstein and Jon Watts said to be in contention.
It’s reported the final decision will be made by Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal, with Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman offering input as well.
It’s also said Marvel and Sony have been meeting with writers for the new Spider-Man movie.
There has been no mention as of late of Drew Goddard who was said to be directing the Sinister Six movie for Sony and was also said to be a favorite of Amy Pascal’s. It seems Goddard’s name has been absent with Marvel’s now being involved. There may be some heat between Goddard and Marvel as Goddard left the Daredevil series, and Sony leaked e-mails revealed contention between Goodard and Marvel as well.
