SDCC 2011: Schwarzenegger approves of the new Conan: The Barbarian (2011)

Crom!

A Conan movie without The Governator?!

He said he would “be bauch,” but Arnold Schwarzenegger, star of two excellent 1980s Conan films, will not battle monsters nor wizards in the New Millennium … but, according to new Conan star Jason Momoa, his performance as the comic book barbarian has the Arnold seal of approval.

“I was excited to find out that he (Arnold) actually watched it and liked it a lot,” Momoa told NextMovie. “He was proud of me and thought I did a good job.”

As reported here on Cosmic Book News, the Conan the Barbarian reboot hits theatres August 19 and, besides Momoa (Stargate: Atlantis), stars Ron Perlman as Corin, Rachel Nichols as Tamara and Rose McGowan as Marique.

Even though Lionsgate was not able to present the action tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village in Hall H at the San Diego Comic Con, major cast members were on hand there to promote the film at the Studio’s booth.

Momoa told the Vancouver Sun that he was not originally warmly received in the role by fans of Robert E. Howard’s pulp fiction character:

“Oh, they hate(d) me,” the Hawaiian-born actor said of Conan fans’ initial reaction to his casting. “Everyone’s like, ‘Who? Baywatch? Stargate?’ It’s like, ‘I can do more than that.’

“Once Game of Thrones (HBO) came out, people were like, ‘Holy sh—’, Conan is going to be badass! After seeing Drogo, they were like, ‘All right, this guy can do it.’”

As for Arnold? Well, like Bob Uecker years ago, I expect Arnold will be in “the front row” August 19th!
