Henry Cavill gets a super reunion for his Highlander movie with Russell Crowe, who will play Ramírez, the part famously played by Sean Connery in the original film.
Of course, Russell Crowe starred as Jor-El in Man of Steel, with Henry Cavill as Superman.
John Wick‘s Chad Stahelski is directing, with a script from Michael Finch.
Who is Ramírez?
In Highlander lore, Ramírez—full name Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez—is an immortal originally born in ancient Egypt in 896 BCE. By the time of the first film, he’s living under a Spanish alias and serves as a mentor to Connor MacLeod. Portrayed by Sean Connery, Ramírez teaches Connor the rules of “The Prize,” the nature of immortality, and how to fight other immortals.
Highlander filming soon
Stahelski recently confirmed they will start filming in mid-September in London.
Not much is actually known about the Highlander reboot but it recently became known that production moved to Amazon Studios, which is where Henry’s new Voltron movie and Warhammer universe is housed.
Kurgan likely
With Russell Crowe announced as Ramírez, it now seems likely that Henry Cavill is indeed playing Connor MacLeod, which, of course, would mean they will be casting for Kurgan, originally played by Clancy Brown. Dave Bautista was at one time rumored for Kurgan.
Will be a big action film
Additional details previously revealed by Stahelski include that they are sticking with the Queen music and will be a big action film.
“… And we’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes. There’s big opportunity for action. There’s a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play. And it’s a bit of a love story, but not how you think. On ‘John Wick,’ I learned a lot on how to bend the storytelling a little… another kind of myth,” he said.
Stahelski continued, “My selling point was, to [Henry Cavill], look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation. So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc there. And you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts…”
