Robert Downey Jr. Was Up For Lex Luthor In Defunct Superman Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:734:]]Instead of seeing Robert Downey Jr. star as Tony Stark in Iron Man, how about as Lex Luthor in Superman?!

Before Bryan Singer was given the reigns to Superman Returns, plans were underway for a very different version of the moving starring the Man Of Steel.

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams wrote the script in 2002, and the movie, dubbed “Flyby,” was to be helmed by McG.

McG spoke about the defunct Superman movie recently, and said that Robert Downey Jr. was to play Lex Luthor.

“We had Robert Downey Jr. locked up to be Lex Luthor, which I think would have been extraordinary,” McG told the Playlist.

However, due to differences between McG and the studio over filming locations, McG ended up leaving the film.

McG even goes on to state that one of the super men they were looking at to play the new Clark Kent was Zack Snyder’s choice to play Big Blue in the Man of Steel, Henry Cavill.

“Ironically, we liked Henry Cavill a lot, but we hadn’t cast him yet,” McG stated.

Regarding Downey Jr. as Lex Luthor, Abrams script called for Luthor to be a government agent obsessed with the UFO phenomenon. Also, Superman is purportedly to have been killed off and reborn in a story that involved a Kryptonian Civl War.

Alas, McG was replaced in 2004 by Singer, Downey went on to become a huge star after Iron Man, and the rest, they say, is history.

What could have been?!
