Ridley Scott is making his return to Ancient Rome this holiday season with the highly anticipated release of Gladiator II, the long-awaited sequel to the Best Picture-winning Gladiator.
As expected, Scott’s new film promises to be as epic, intense, and brutal as its predecessor. The MPAA confirmed this week that Gladiator II will receive an R-rating, citing “strong bloody violence,” much like the original film nearly 25 years ago.
In a recent interview with Empire, Ridley Scott also spoke highly of the movie, suggesting it could be a standout in his impressive career.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever made,” Scott stated confidently, adding, “Though [I have] made several other great movies.”
A Return to the Colosseum
Gladiator II picks up decades after the original, centering on an older Lucius, the son of Lucilla, who was a key character in the first movie.
Paul Mescal takes on the lead role, stepping into the shoes once filled by Russell Crowe, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Maximus in the 2000 classic.
This new chapter in the saga sees Lucius thrust into the brutal world of the Colosseum once more, driven by vengeance and the desire to restore Rome’s former glory.
What is Gladiator II About?
Thanks to a first-look article from Vanity Fair back in July, we know that Gladiator II follows Lucius as he grows up far from his mother, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). As a child, Lucilla sent him to Numidia, on Africa’s northern coast, to protect him from Rome’s dangerous politics. However, Lucius never fully understood her decision, and as he matured, his resentment grew despite her good intentions. Now living a peaceful life with his wife and child in Numidia, Lucius’s world is turned upside down when conquerors from Rome invade, led by Pedro Pascal’s character, Marcus Acacius.
The official synopsis teases an epic tale of power, intrigue, and vengeance: “Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.”
